Severe Weather Leaves Cape Metro Communities Reeling
Persistent heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding have caused significant disruption across the Cape Town metro, leaving many residents displaced and struggling to recover as damage continues to mount in vulnerable communities.
Several areas, including Mfuleni, Nyanga, Site C, KTC, and the Island settlement near Philippi East, have been severely affected. Homes have been battered by storms, with roofs torn off, walls damaged, and widespread flooding leaving some structures unlivable.
In the Island community, residents say they are struggling to access or remain in their homes due to floodwaters. Many have had to move in with relatives, while others remain in damaged houses out of fear that abandoned properties could be targeted by criminals.
Community leaders report growing concern as families are left without proper shelter. Attempts to secure emergency accommodation have been challenging, and residents say promised relief, including food assistance, has yet to arrive in full.
In Mfuleni, some residents have expressed deep frustration after repeatedly rebuilding their homes only to see them destroyed again by storms. One resident, whose shack was flattened by strong winds, said she is now considering leaving the area entirely due to the ongoing cycle of loss and rebuilding.
Local civic groups, including the South African National Civic Organisation, have called for urgent government support, warning that many households will continue to face hardship long after the weather improves. They say widespread damage to roofs, flooring, and basic structures will require sustained recovery efforts.
