The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness encouraged residents to take simple, consistent steps to protect their health. This year’s global theme, “Controlling Hypertension Together,” emphasizes that managing high blood pressure requires collaboration between individuals, families, communities, and healthcare workers.

Prof Erika Jones, a nephrologist and hypertension specialist at Groote Schuur Hospital, stresses that controlling blood pressure involves more than taking medication. She says adhering to lifestyle changes, like eating healthily, staying active, and reducing stress is essential not only to prevent hypertension but also to treat it effectively.

By combining medication with healthy habits and community support, South Africans can take meaningful steps toward reducing the risks of this often-overlooked health threat.
