All schools in the Western Cape will be closed on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, due to dangerous weather conditions affecting the province.
The Western Cape Education Department says the decision was made after talks with disaster management officials and the South African Weather Service, following warnings of heavy rain and flooding risks.
A Level 8 weather warning has been issued for parts of Cape Town and surrounding areas, including Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Breede Valley, Witzenberg, and Theewaterskloof. Officials warn of possible flooding, mudslides, and dangerous river levels.
Education MEC David Maynier says the closure is a safety measure for learners and staff. Schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, depending on conditions.
Authorities are urging families to stay safe and follow official updates as the severe weather continues.
