Several schools across the province have suffered infrastructure damage following days of severe weather, heavy rainfall and flooding.
Education MEC David Maynier confirmed that all
public ordinary and special schools in the province are closed today as
dangerous weather conditions worsened.
More than 227 schools applied for closure as
heavy rain, strong winds and flooding disrupted learning and damaged school
property across several districts.
The Cape Winelands, Eden and Central Karoo
districts were among the hardest hit, with schools in Worcester, Ceres,
Rawsonville, Tulbagh and the Hex River Valley affected by flooding, blocked roads
and storm damage.
Infrastructure damage at schools have continued to emerge, including damage to roofs and school buildings.
Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier visited Beaumont Primary School in Somerset West as it was one of the affected schools by the storm.
The Western Cape Education Department has
assessments that are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage at
affected schools.
Provincial disaster management teams remain on
high alert as the South African Weather Service continues to warn of disruptive
rainfall, flooding, mudslides and dangerous road conditions across parts of the
province.
