WESTERN CAPE SCHOOLS HIT HARD BY SEVERE STORMS AND FLOODING

Several schools across the province have suffered infrastructure damage following days of severe weather, heavy rainfall and flooding.

Education MEC David Maynier confirmed that all public ordinary and special schools in the province are closed today as dangerous weather conditions worsened. 

More than 227 schools applied for closure as heavy rain, strong winds and flooding disrupted learning and damaged school property across several districts.

The Cape Winelands, Eden and Central Karoo districts were among the hardest hit, with schools in Worcester, Ceres, Rawsonville, Tulbagh and the Hex River Valley affected by flooding, blocked roads and storm damage. 

Infrastructure damage at schools have continued to emerge, including damage to roofs and school buildings. 

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier visited Beaumont Primary School in Somerset West as it was one of the affected schools by the storm. 

The Western Cape Education Department has assessments that are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage at affected schools.

Provincial disaster management teams remain on high alert as the South African Weather Service continues to warn of disruptive rainfall, flooding, mudslides and dangerous road conditions across parts of the province.
