A talented Grade 11 learner from Mitchells Plain is set to take her passion for space exploration to new heights after being selected to represent South Africa at a prestigious international space design competition in the United States.

Zayaan Abdurahman, a learner at Mondale High School, has earned a place among only eight learners nationwide who will travel to NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida this July. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the young aspiring scientist and serves as an inspiration to learners across the country.

Zayaan secured her place through the South African Space Design Competition, a programme that challenges learners to think creatively and scientifically by designing futuristic space settlements. The competition encourages innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving while exposing participants to real-world aerospace concepts.

For the Mitchells Plain learner, the opportunity is the culmination of years of curiosity about the universe. Her fascination with space began during childhood, spending evenings stargazing with her grandmother and dreaming about what lies beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Speaking about her selection, Zayaan expressed both excitement and gratitude.

"I'm extremely excited for this trip. I'm awarded an opportunity to meet students from all around the world and get to tour the Kennedy Space Centre. I can't believe that I will get a chance to see where Artemis II took off. I would like to give a well-deserved thank you to all my friends and family that are supporting me in this journey."

The upcoming trip will provide Zayaan with a unique opportunity to engage with fellow young space enthusiasts from around the globe, exchange ideas, and gain first-hand insight into one of the world's most renowned space exploration facilities.

Her achievement highlights the growing interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among South African youth and demonstrates how determination, curiosity, and hard work can open doors to international opportunities.
