More than 1,000 suspects have been arrested since the launch of Operation Prosper (1 April 2026), a joint law enforcement initiative aimed at disrupting gang-related crime and improving safety across the Western Cape.
The operation, which sees members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), was introduced to strengthen policing in communities plagued by gang violence, illegal firearms and drug trafficking.
According to authorities, the increased deployment has boosted police visibility in crime hotspots while leading to the seizure of illegal firearms and drugs. A police spokesperson said the operation continues to target crimical networks operating across the province.
The arrests come against the backdrop of persistent violent crime in the Western Cape. SAPS crime statistics for Januray to March 2026 recorded 983 murders in the province--an average of 11 murders everyday. Although this represents an 8% decrease compared to the same period last year, gang violence remains one of the biggest contributors to the province's murder rate, with 224 murders linked to gang-related conflict during the three-month period.
Despite the slight decline in overall violent crimes, police have stressed that the levels of violence remain unacceptably high. Operation Prosper forms part of broader efforts to restore safety in gang-affected communities by increasing law enforcement visibility, disrupting organised crime and taking illegal firearms and drugs off the streets.
