Pregnancy statistics in the Western Cape

The Western Cape has recorded 296 pregnancies among girls aged between 10 and 14 during the 2024 to 2025 financial year.

These figures were released by the provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Social Development. The committee says the numbers raise serious concern about child sexual abuse and statutory rape in the province.

It says it will call relevant departments, including the police and the National Prosecuting Authority, to account on what is being done to address the problem.

Democratic Alliance member Wendy Kaizer-Philander says children must be protected, and those responsible must be arrested and prosecuted.
