Mental Health in Sport: More Than Just Winning

Athletes are often seen as strong and resilient, but they also face mental health challenges. The pressure to perform, recover from injuries, deal with criticism and meet expectations can take a serious toll on their wellbeing.

Recent events in South African sport have reminded us that mental health should never be overlooked. Athletes are people first, and they deserve the same care and support as anyone else.

Creating safe spaces where players can speak openly, seek professional help and receive support from coaches, teammates and fans can make a real difference. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

As supporters, we should remember that our words matter. A little kindness and understanding can go a long way. It’s time to break the stigma and make mental wellbeing part of every conversation about sport.
