Mitchells Plain cat killings under investigation as Animal Welfare Society appeals for public's help

 The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) is investigating the disturbing discovery of several dead cats in Harmony Village, Mitchells Plain, and is appealing to the public for information that could help identify those responsible.

The cats were found near a children's play park at the corner of Pinecliff and Fawn Roads, leaving residents shocked and concerned. According to AWS SA, inspectors recovered several of the animals, all of which had multiple deep puncture wounds consistent with dog bites.

Investigators are now working to establish whether the cats were deliberately attacked by dogs or used as bait in illegal dog fighting activities. Formal forensic post-mortem examinations are underway to determine the exact cause of death and gather evidence for the investigation.

In a public statement, AWS SA described the incident as a deliberate act of cruelty.

"This was not a random act. It was calculated, deliberate and exceptionally cruel," the organisation said.

The society believes the location where the animals were found may have been intentionally chosen to intimidate and distress the local community.

The case has also drawn comparisons to the 2021 cat killings in Manenberg, where investigators reported an increase in cases of animals being deliberately harmed.

Animal welfare officials say community cooperation will be crucial in identifying those responsible and preventing further acts of animal cruelty.
