A man has died and a firefighter was injured after a devastating fire broke out at an apartment building in Sea Point last night.
The blaze started during the afternoon and continued into
the night as firefighters battled to bring it under control. The intensity of
the fire caused parts of the building to collapse, including the roof and staircase.
The building was evacuated as emergency crews worked to
contain the flames and ensure the safety of residents. No other injuries were
reported.
Firefighters remained at the scene into the early hours of
the morning as they continued with firefighting and safety operations.
City of Cape Town spokesperson Jermain Carelse confirmed
that one person had died in the incident, while a firefighter sustained
injuries during the operation.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the
blaze.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced
by firefighters when responding to fires in densely populated areas, where
collapsing structures can pose significant risks to emergency personnel.
Further details are expected to emerge as investigations
continue.
