Public protector finds service delivery failures by the City of Cape Town

A recent report by public protector Kholeka Gcaleka has revealed that the City of Cape Town has failed to provide basic municipal services to residents of Langa Flats, and Khayelitsha Township as required by the Constitution.

Releasing the report following a systemic investigation, Gcaleka reportedly said the investigation found that complaints of poor service delivery were substantiated, with the municipality’s conduct amounting to improper conduct, maladministration and prejudice against affected residents.

Political Parties and organizations have critisized the city of these findings.

Action SA says the report highlights shortcomings in housing, sanitation and other basic municipal services under successive Democratic Alliance administrations.

The party argued the findings, together with a recent Constitutional Court ruling on affordable housing, show a pattern of unequal service delivery.

Meanwhile the ANC says the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town failed to meet their constitutional obligation.

“The ANC in the Western Cape has welcomed the landmark constitutional court judgement, confirming that the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town failed to meet their constitutional obligation to address the apartheid era spatial quality.” ANC Western Cape spokesperson, Sifiso Mtsweni
