The Water We Cannot Waste

The Western Cape once came dangerously close to running out of water. The term “Day Zero” became a reminder that access to water is not something communities can take for granted.

As residents prepared for the possibility of dry taps, everyday habits changed. People reduced water use, collected water where possible and became more aware of how much they consumed.

Although dam levels have since recovered, the questions raised by the drought remain. Climate change, population growth and pressure on infrastructure continue to challenge the province’s water future.

The experience of Day Zero showed that water security is not only about having enough water today, but about ensuring that future generations have access to this essential resource.
