A video circulating on social media showing a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier allegedly hitting and kicking a woman during an operation in Elsies River has sparked public concern, although police say no formal complaint has been lodged.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the
incident occurred while officers were arresting a suspected drug dealer. Police
allege that during the operation, a resident attempted to throw a stone at
officers, leading to the confrontation captured in the video.
The operation resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the
seizure of 338 packets of cocaine, 59 mandrax tablets, and approximately R2,000
in cash, highlighting the scale of the suspected drug-related activity.
The footage has prompted criticism from community members
and activists, who have questioned the conduct of some SANDF members deployed
alongside police in crime-fighting operations. Concerns have been raised about
the use of force and the treatment of civilians during such operations.
As the video continues to circulate online, there are
growing calls for transparency and accountability regarding the actions of
security personnel during law enforcement operations. Whether an official
complaint will be lodged or an investigation initiated remains to be seen.
