Western Cape Opens R86 Million Acute Psychiatric Unit at Eerste River Hospital

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has officially opened a new 30-bed Acute Psychiatric Unit at Eerste River Hospital, marking a significant step in expanding specialised mental healthcare services across the province.

The newly completed R86 million facility has been developed to improve access to urgent psychiatric care and respond to the increasing demand for mental health services in the Western Cape. The unit will provide care for patients experiencing acute mental health crises, offering a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment focused on recovery and dignity.

Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the new unit represents a commitment to ensuring that residents in need of specialised psychiatric support receive timely and appropriate care.

The modern facility has been designed with patient wellbeing and operational efficiency in mind. It includes well-lit and ventilated wards, dedicated courtyards, and a layout that supports both quality patient care and improved working conditions for healthcare professionals.

The opening of the Eerste River Acute Psychiatric Unit forms part of a broader provincial investment in expanding mental health infrastructure. It is the first of three new psychiatric facilities planned for the current financial year.

Additional 30-bed acute psychiatric units are expected to open at Khayelitsha Hospital and New Somerset Hospital, which will collectively add 90 new acute psychiatric beds to the Western Cape healthcare system.

The Department of Health and Wellness says the expansion will help reduce pressure on existing psychiatric services while improving access to specialised care for communities across the province.

The development comes amid growing recognition of the need for stronger mental healthcare systems, with the Western Cape continuing to invest in facilities that provide accessible, patient-centred psychiatric services.

With the opening of the Eerste River unit, the province takes another step towards building a more responsive and inclusive mental healthcare network for residents in need.
