A 73-year-old man was rescued after falling from his surf-ski off Simon’s Town.
The incident happened in challenging sea conditions, with strong winds and waves reaching around two metres. The man’s leash broke, causing his surf-ski to drift away from him.
Fortunately, a fellow paddler was nearby and helped him retrieve the craft. An NSRI SafeTrx emergency alert was also activated, allowing rescue teams to respond quickly.
The National Sea Rescue Institute launched a rescue boat and recovered the man safely.
Although he was not injured, the man was treated for mild hypothermia after being exposed to the cold water.
The incident highlights the importance of having reliable safety equipment and emergency systems when taking part in water activities. The quick actions of the fellow paddler and the NSRI helped ensure the man returned safely.
