The increase in electric mobility devices has raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians and how some riders are using the busy public space.

The Sea Point Promenade attracts large numbers of residents, families, runners, walkers and visitors, making pedestrian safety an important concern as more people turn to e-scooters and e-bikes to get around.

The City says the new measures are aimed at improving safety while ensuring that the promenade remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Authorities are particularly focused on encouraging responsible behaviour among riders and reducing the risk of collisions or other incidents involving pedestrians.

MMC for Community Services and Health Francine Higham says the City’s priority is to create a safe environment where everyone can enjoy the Sea Point Promenade responsibly.

The introduction of the measures comes as electric mobility becomes increasingly common in Cape Town, with residents using e-scooters, e-bikes and other devices for transport, recreation and exercise.

While these devices offer a convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel, their increased presence in busy pedestrian areas has also created challenges around sharing public spaces safely.

The City says it wants to strike a balance between accommodating new forms of mobility and protecting pedestrians who use the promenade.

For visitors, the message is clear: the Sea Point Promenade is a shared public space, and all users are expected to act responsibly and consider the safety of those around them.

As the use of electric mobility devices continues to grow, the effectiveness of the new measures will be closely watched by both riders and pedestrians who rely on the promenade as one of Cape Town’s most popular outdoor spaces.
