Extortion is becoming an increasing threat to businesses and communities in South Africa, with criminals using threats and intimidation to force business owners to hand over money.
A recent police operation resulted in the arrest of four suspects allegedly linked to an extortion ring targeting more than 50 Somali and Ethiopian business owners in Stellenbosch and Khayamandi.
Police seized R120,000 in cash, four vehicles worth an estimated R3 million, and several cell phones. The suspects face charges including extortion and money laundering.
The arrests highlight the need for businesses and communities to work closely with law enforcement to combat organised crime. Extortion not only causes financial losses but also creates fear and threatens the ability of legitimate businesses to operate safely.
Victims or witnesses of extortion are encouraged to report the crime through the dedicated extortion line: 0800 31 4444.
