The teenager appeared in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, a day after his arrest during a joint operation involving the South African Police Service and United States law enforcement agencies.

The charges include sexual assault, sexual exploitation of children, possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, and displaying pornographic material to a child. He also faces charges relating to animal cruelty and alleged threats of violence or property damage.

His case has been postponed until Thursday, 20 August, pending a medical assessment.

International investigation

Police said the investigation was launched after information was received from the FBI, the US Embassy and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

The teenager was traced to an address in Malmesbury and arrested on Monday. Electronic devices were seized and sent for forensic examination.

Police say several child victims have already been identified and that possible fraud and money-laundering offences are also being investigated.

Authorities say networks linked to “764” target children and vulnerable people online, using manipulation, threats and blackmail.

The investigation is continuing, while the teenager remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
