A 10111 emergency call centre operator is facing internal disciplinary proceedings following allegations that an emergency call about a fatal mob attack in Dunoon was not handled appropriately.

The incident relates to the deaths of four people whose burnt bodies were discovered in an open field near the N7 off-ramp on Malibongwe Drive on Sunday.

According to the complaint, a member of the public called 10111 at around 1:30pm after witnessing what appeared to be a mob attack. The caller reportedly tried to provide the location using GPS but was allegedly repeatedly asked for an exact address.

The call was reportedly terminated after the caller requested the operator’s details. The recording was later reviewed, and concerns were raised about how the call was handled.

SAPS management has since launched an internal disciplinary investigation into the operator.

Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais has welcomed the action, saying emergency calls must be treated seriously and that officials must be held accountable when they fail in their duties.

Police have also opened four murder cases. The victims have not yet been identified, and the motive for the killings remains under investigation.

The incident has also raised concerns about the effectiveness of the national 10111 emergency service. Parliament has previously highlighted problems including dropped calls, outdated infrastructure, technology challenges and slow response times.

The latest case has renewed calls for better resources, management and accountability within the emergency call centre system.
