Weekend Fires in Cape Town

Fires can spread quickly, putting lives at risk and leaving communities with devastating losses.

This past week, several fires across the Western Cape resulted in deaths, injuries, damaged homes, and hundreds of people being displaced.

From informal settlements to apartment buildings, firefighters faced dangerous conditions as they worked to control the flames.

In Hout Bay, at least 400 people were displaced after a fire damaged parts of the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement.

The blaze destroyed important infrastructure, including electricity poles and toilets, leaving many residents in need of support.

In Sea Point, an apartment fire claimed at least one life and injured a firefighter.

The fire caused major damage to the building, with the roof and staircase collapsing before firefighters managed to bring it under control.

On Table Mountain, firefighters also battled a blaze above Tafelberg Road.

The fire caused heavy smoke in the area and forced the temporary closure of the road. Although the flames have died down, teams continue to monitor the area for possible flare-ups.

The danger of fires is not only the destruction of property but also the loss of lives.

Five children between the ages of four and 13 died in two separate house fires in Fisantekraal and the Pholile Park informal settlement near Strand.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The City of Cape Town says emergency teams continue to support affected communities while firefighters remain on alert.
