Western Cape, South Africa — Women are making their mark in the traditionally male-dominated rail industry, with at least 65 women currently working as train drivers across the Western Cape’s provincial rail network.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku has paid tribute to
these women, highlighting their growing contribution to the province’s public
transport system and the opportunities available to women seeking careers in
the rail sector.
Sileku recently experienced this progress firsthand when he travelled on a train driven by a female train driver.

According to the Western Cape Mobility Department, the
growing number of female train drivers reflects efforts to create more
opportunities for women to develop careers and gain valuable skills in the
transport sector.
The presence of 65 women train drivers is also being viewed
as an important step towards greater representation and gender equality in the
workplace.
As more women enter the rail industry, their experiences
could inspire younger women to consider careers in transport, engineering and
other technical fields traditionally seen as male-dominated.
For Sileku, the progress is a reminder of the important
role women play in keeping the province’s rail network moving.
The Western Cape’s female train drivers are not only
operating trains—they are helping to challenge stereotypes and pave the way for
the next generation of women in the transport industry.
