A 14-year-old boy accused of murdering 10-year-old Octavia
Swarts in Kraaifontein has been re-arrested, days after he was released into
the care of his parents.
The teenager appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Friday following his re-arrest.

Vlakte on Monday, 14 September 2026, after she reportedly went missing from her
family home the previous day.
The Grade 4 learner had gone for a run with her cousin on
Sunday. Her family became concerned when she did not return home by 5pm, which
relatives said was unusual for her.
Her family reported her missing and began searching for
her, later joined by members of the community. Her body was found in the dam
the following morning at about 8.30am.
According to reports, police initially opened an inquest docket after the
discovery. The case was later treated as a murder investigation, leading to the
arrest of the 14-year-old.
The teenager was initially arrested on a murder charge and
was expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court. However, he was
later released on the instruction of the National Prosecuting Authority to
allow police to conduct further investigations.
He has now been re-arrested and brought before the court.
The circumstances surrounding Octavia’s death remain under
investigation.
Her death has deeply affected the Joostenberg Vlakte
community and her school. Joostenberg Primêre Skool described Octavia as a
friendly and bright learner who excelled academically.
The school said it was mourning the loss of its Grade 4A
learner and extended its condolences to her family, friends and classmates.
In a tribute, the school said Octavia’s memory would remain
part of the school community and that her passing had left a profound sense of
loss.
