Khayelitsha expected to be a battle field – 2026 Local Government Elections

As South Africa gears up for the upcoming November 4 Local Government Elections, Khayelitsha is expected to be a battle field.

The IEC received a record of 142 072 candidates from 227 parties nationally.

In the City of Cape Town, with 116 wards, the Battles are drawn:

The DA is defending the metro with Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. Lewis faces Brett Herron from the Good Party/Rise Mzantsi. The EFF with Nontando Nolutshungu, Action SA’s Dereleen James and the Patriotic Alliance’s Cheslyn Steenberg.

The DA last week, unveiled five new ward candidates in Khayelitsha – Wards 93, 95, 96, 97 and 98 – targeting areas where it has not led before. We do understand that these are ANC led wards.

ANC Spokesperson in the Western Cape, Sfiso Mtsweni, said the ANC will contest and win these wards again

“Of cause the DA and other political parties will always take chances in our base wards but I think we’ve all seen even the polling’s they are on the verge of losing the City. So these are just desperate attempts to try and enter our bases” said Mtsweni.

For now, according to the IEC election timetable, we are in the verification window.

The IEC received a record of 142 072 candidates from 227 parties nationally.

The Bush Radio News Team reached out to the DA for comment, response still awaited.

For now, Wednesday September, 16, it’s all eyes on the IEC when the commission publishes the final candidate lists. Voters will be able to check their exact ward candidates on election.org.za

And then the Special Vote Applications open on Monday, September, 21, 2026.
