Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa says South Africans need to act immediately to prevent permanent damage to the environment.
Molewa was speaking at a climate change summit in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Durban next month.
Minister Edna Molewa added that the latest scientific reports indicate that there will be an increase in the frequency of severe weather events if climate change continues on its nearby course.
The country will also become drier in the west and wetter in the east.
