Western Cape police are making strides in the confiscation of drugs worth millions of rands.
Two suspects were arrested in Mitchell’s Plain on Tuesday,
for being in possession of R4 million worth of mandrax tablets. Police said
they pounced on the address in Beacon Valley. It is reported that the
identified address is a strong hold of one of the 28 gangs in Cape Town. The
case against alleged 28-gang boss Ralph Stanfield and his co-accused is
currently before the Western cape High court. The matter resumes again on 30
January.
‘’At about 13:40, they pounced on the address in Volvo
Street, brought all the occupants under control and searched the premises.
Their attention was drawn to a Hyundai LDV parked on the premises. Upon
inspecting the vehicle, they found a false compartment, opened the compartment
by force and found 80 000 mandrax tablets hidden inside the compartment. They
detained a male aged 26 and a female aged 33 for dealing in drugs,’’ said Warrant
Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.
Two days prior, Maitland flying Squad arrested two male
suspects near the Sable Road exit, following a high speed chase, after officers
noticed the driver drove recklessly. They confiscated a consignment of mandrax
tablets with an estimated value of R1.5 million.
‘’Police members of Maitland flying Squad were busy with
patrols on the N1 highway when noticed the driver of a Golf 6 GTI driving
recklessly. The members requested the assistance of a patrol vehicle nearby
whilst they kept the suspicious vehicle under observation. When the driver of
the VW Golf became aware of the presence of the patrol vehicle, he sped away
which resulted in a high speed chase. The police members forced the driver to
stop the motor vehicle near the Sable Road exit. The occupants became restless
but were quickly brought under control. The members continued to search the
vehicle and the occupants during which they confiscated a consignment of mandrax
tablets with an estimated value of R1.5 million. They detained two males aged
40 and 37 for the possession of drugs,’’ said Swartbooi.
Also on Sunday, officers attached to Operation Shanela
arrested a woman in an informal settlement in Browns Farm after she was found
in possession of 50 sachets filled with tik. In an unrelated matter, three men
were arrested in Delft, after one of the men were found in possession of 49
sachets with tik and a scale, while two men were found with cocaine. Officers
detained the trio aged between 23 and 29.
All the suspects will appear in the Athlone, Bellville,
