The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and a death inquest after a 34-year-old police constable opened fire at three members of the public at Ashton police station in the Cape Winelands on Friday morning.
The police’s Andre Traut said the officer who was on duty
at the time of the incident, shot dead a man and wounded another. A third person
escaped unharmed.
Traut added that the policeman left the police station and
drove to his residence in Zolani, where his body was discovered with a gunshot
wound.
The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage.
The Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety
MEC, Reagen Allen, said he is shocked by the incident.
‘’I am deeply shocked by the incident that occurred. My
condolences go out to all loved ones affected by these tragic circumstances. I
also wish the wounded individuals a speedy recovery.’’
‘’I would like to encourage anyone with information about
this incident related make it available to the South African police Service so
that the investigation can be concluded. Although the circumstances surrounding
the incident must still be determined, I would like to say to all SAPS members that
support is always available to them, regardless of where and when they might
require it,’’ added Allen.
