Trio believed to be behind Bishop Lavis mass murder, arrested

Western Cape police made a breakthrough in a mass murder that occurred in Bishop Lavis

Six people - four men and two women - were shot and killed in Kogelberg Street on Thursday evening. Two other persons were wounded during the shooting incident. However, police confirmed on that a 26-year-old woman has succumbed to serious head injuries on Friday morning

‘’Police reports from the scene indicate that at approximately 20:40 an armed suspect entered an informal dwelling and fired several shots at the occupants. Murder and attempted murder dockets were opened for investigation with Anti-Gang Unit detectives investigating the cases. No arrests have been effected yet. The ages of the deceased persons are between 24 and 55.’’

The Bishop Lavis shooting incident happens on the back of another shooting where five people were shot and killed in Atlantis early on Wednesday evening.

‘’Both shooting incidents are believed to be gang related,’’ said Brigadier Novela Potelwa, Western Cape police spokesperson, on Thursday.

A day later, three suspects aged 17, 24 and 29, were arrested. According to Potelwa, ‘’the SAPS WC multidisciplinary tracing team worked through the night’’ to ensure arrests were made.

‘’During the tracing operation, a firearm was also confiscated. It has been sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was utilised in the commission of any crimes,’’ said Brigadier Novela Potelwa, Western Cape police spokesperson.

The suspects are facing murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm charges. They are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Potelwa said additional deployments were assigned to Bishop Lavis, and the officers will remain in the area ‘’in efforts to stabilise the area. They will conduct patrols, high density operations and raids.’’

Five shot and killed in Atlantis, five others left wounded

Five people were shot and killed whilst five others were left injured on Wednesday evening in Atlantis.

‘’Reports from the scene indicate the victims of the shooting incident were returning home in three vehicles from the Silverstroom beach when yet-to-be identified gunmen opened fire on the vehicles on the corner of Old Mamre and Silverstream Roads. As a consequence five individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 were fatally wounded and five others rushed to a medical facility after sustaining gunshot wounds,’’ said Brigadier Novela Potelwa, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Atlantis police are since probing cases of murder and attempted murder.

‘’As the investigation unfold, it is expected that the motive for the shooting incident will be determined. No arrests have been effected yet,’’ said Potelwa.

Man arrested for stabbing 7 family members

 A 33 year old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing 7 family members in Bergville, KwaZulu Natal on Saturday.



Five of the family members have died and 2 are still recovering from their injuries. The suspect’s mother,sister, uncle, 4 children and 2 elderly women were stabbed by the suspect.

The motive for the stabbing is still unknown, police are still investigating the case.

According to the police the suspect had many domestic-violence related cases opened against him.

Teenager arrested for double murder in Athlone

Western Cape police made a breakthrough when they arrested a 17-year-old boy who is accused of being behind a double murder in Athlone.

The teenager is believed to be one of three suspects who opened fire at a residents in front of a house in Nerina Close, Athlone, last Thursday,fatally shot and killed two men while another man was admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound.

‘’The investigation team went the proverbial extra mile, pursuing all the available information in order to effect an arrest. Their persistence were rewarded when they arrested a 17 year old male on Wednesday 09 October 2024,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.

The suspect will make his court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on Friday on two counts of murder and attempted murder.                                                    

‘’The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner , Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile lauded the tenacity of the investigating team attached to the Anti-Gang unit who worked tirelessly to ensure a breakthrough in a double murder and attempted murder,’’ said Swartbooi.

Man shot and killed in Somerset West

A 42-year-old man was shot and killed in Somerset West on Monday morning. It is understood the victim was sitting in his vehicle when the incident occurred.

‘’Somerset West Serious and Violent Crime Detectives are hard at work pursuing leads in a bid to apprehend the suspects who are responsible for the death of 42 year old man on Monday 07 October 2024. Reports suggested that three unknown armed men opened fire at around 07:00 on the victim, a Sotho Foreign National in Lourensford Street in Somerset West. The victim did not survive the onslaught on his life and was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western cape police spokesperson.

Two men arrested for the murder of community leader

 The two was nabbed nearly a month after the shooting, which led to the death of the 49-year-old father in Clarkes Estate on September 8. Clinton Treu was shot in a suspected attempted hijacking while driving with a friend and one other person.

Investigations around the shooting are underway, the motive behind the killing is still unknown. Wendy Francis Treu’s partner said she was made to understand that Treu and his friend came under attack as they travelled home from a night out with friends.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed the arrest and said: “Be advised that two suspects aged 27 and 29 were arrested on Wednesday for charges of murder"
.

 They are due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court today. The community will be protesting to show their support for Clinton's family.

Young boy's mutilated and burned body found in Delft; Man shot and killed in Athlone

Another senseless murder has been reported in Cape Town. A young boy has been found killed in Delft. The 12-year-old was discovered in an open field in Leiden, Delft on Wednesday afternoon.

The police’s F.C. Van Wyk confirmed that the boy’s mutilated and burned body was found just after 14:00 in Renoster Street.

“According to reports, members received a complaint from Radio Control about the discovery of the body at the mentioned address. On their arrival, they found the body mutilated and burned,” said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western cape police spokesperson.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The motive for this murder is now the subject of an investigation by the South African Police Service. No arrest has been made as suspect/s are unknown at this stage,’’ he added.

Later the day, in a separate incident, a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in Kewtown, Athlone.

The police’s F.C Van Wyk believes the motive could be gang related.

No arrests have been made as the suspect or suspects are still unknown.

"According to reports, members on duty attended to a complaint of a shooting incident at the mentioned address, and on arrival they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the face. He was declared deceased by medical personnel on the scene," said Van Wyk.

Police know who suspects are in the Lusisiki mass murder

 


Lusikiki, Eastern Cape police have increased visibility where 18 people were shot and killed.

Police top brass, including Minister Senzo Mchunu visited the murder scene on Tuesday to establish how Saturday's attack happened. Mchunu yesterday stated that police now know who the criminals are who committed the murder. Apparently the reason behind the murder was a family feud.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said that a tactical response team would remain in the area to protect community members.

Off-duty law enforcement killed in Phillipi

Another law enforcement officer has been killed in Cape Town. The incident occurred in New Eisleben Road, Philippi East on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Western Cape police, the 27-year-old man was off duty at the time of the incident.

‘’Philippi East detectives are hard at work, following up on information at their disposal, in a bid to apprehend the suspect/s… According to reports members received a complaint of a shooting incident at the mentioned address and on their arrival they found the body of the deceased in a VW Polo,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Police confirmed that the circumstances surrounding this shooting incident are under investigation.

‘’The motive is believed to be possible attempted robbery. No arrest has been made as suspect/s are unknown at this stage,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Body of elderly woman discovered in Tafelsig, Mitchell's Plain

A Mitchell’s Plain community are reeling following the discovery of the body of an elderly woman in Tafelsig.

Western Cape police said officers found the body of a 87-year-old woman inside her house in Steenbokberg Street, just after midday on Saturday.

‘’Mitchell’s Plain police registered a murder case for investigation… The victim was found lying on the floor in her bedroom. The circumstances surrounding her death forms part of the police investigation,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Media Liaison Officer at Western Cape SAPS.

No arrests have been made as yet. Anyone with any information about this  incident are urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

It is understood the woman's son-in-law made the discovery after he dropped food for her. According to her daugher, who lives around the corner from her Ellen Malan, was independent and did not want anyone to live with her.

Meanwhile, the Cape Flats Safety Forum condemned the incident.

‘’We call on the authorities to leave no stones unturned to find the alleged perpetrators. We are further calling on the South African Police Services to activate its 72-hour plan in finding the alleged perpetrators,’’ said Abie Isaacs, Chairperson of the Cape Flats Safety Forum.

‘’We noted that SAPS stemmed the authority of state to deal with alleged extortionist. We hope the same oomph and vigour be displayed in finding the culprits that has brutally murdered a senior citizen,’’ he added.

Man shot and killed in Bonteheuwel

A 24-year-old man was shot and killed in Bonteheuwel on Saturday morning. Western Cape confirmed that the incident occurred in Redberry Close, and that a murder case is being probed.

‘’The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Saturday morning, 28 September 2024 at about 09h15 in Redberry Close, Bonteheuwel, where a 24 year old man was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation.  Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint of a shooting, and upon arrival on the scene, they found the victim inside his vehicle with gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation. The suspect/s are yet to be arrested,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Media Liaison Officer at Western Cape SAPS.

Ward councillor, Angus McKenzie said two suspects were arrested in relation to the incident. He applauded residents for reporting the crime.

‘’ At just after 8a.m this morning (Saturday), 2 known gangsters in the R Block of Bonteheuwel were alleged to have murdered a driver of a silver polo. I was immediately provided with the description and location of the two individuals and was able to immediately relay this information to our tip-off service. Within hours of receiving the information at exactly 12:30pm, the two suspects were arrested and taken to Bishop Lavis police station in connection with the shooting. The details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.’’

‘’However, I want to applaud the resident for speaking up and providing extremely credible information, which allowed our hard-working SAPS Bishop Lavis officers to place these individuals behind bars. This, indeed, is a testament to a collective and holistic turnaround in attitude of the people of Bonteheuwel. They demand peace at all costs, even if it means speaking up. Silence will no longer be tolerated,’’ added McKenzie.

Double murder in Delft

Delft police are investigating a double murder in Leiden that occurred on Monday night. The police said four others has been wounded.



‘’The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident in Bongo Street, Leiden Delft, where two men aged 29 and 32 were shot and fatally wounded and four males between 28 and 40 shot and wounded are under investigation. Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. The victims were taken to nearby medical facilities for medical treatment, where the 29-year-old and 32-year-old were declared deceased.’’

Police said the motive for the attack is unknown at the stage and no arrests has been made.

The case against a teenage boy for the murder of Deveney Nel has been postponed

The case against the teenager accused of Deveney Nel's murder in Caledon has been adjourned to 16 October for further investigations.

The 17-year-old, whose name cannot be disclosed, appeared briefly in court on Wednesday and is accused of stabbing 16-year-old Nel to death a month ago.

Her body was found in a storage room on the grounds of Overberg High School during a sports event.

Eric Ntabazalila of the National Prosecuting Authority said that further forensic and digital investigations are needed.

Community members continue to support Nel's family, holding placards outside the court chanting "justice for Deveney." Activist Hein Wyngaard mentioned the impact of the incident on their town.

Unidentified woman found dead in Mahikeng

Mahikeng police and community members are searching for answers after finding a lifeless body of a woman in Danville outside Mahikeng.



According to police, initial investigations reveal the woman was raped before being murdered. The victim's body was found next to a dumping site on Monday. She was wearing a white floral print trouser, a peach t shirt, grey and black blouse including a military jacket which was found next to her.

Description of the deceased aged between 25-30 she is short, slender built and has long hair.

Man on the run after allegedly killing his child with an axe

Limpopo police are on the lookout for a male suspect who allegedly brutally killed his 18 month old baby boy and attempted to kill his wife and mother in law yesterday in Polokwane.



The wife, mother in law and baby attended a ceremony at their neighbours when the man started to attack his mother in law who was carrying the baby on her back. The suspect hacked the elderly woman and the baby twice with the axe. He then proceeded to hack his wife on the forehead.

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, but the baby sadly succumbed to his injuries. Police opened a case of murder, attempted murder and assault.

The provincial commissioner of Limpopo police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe says “situations like this leave us disappointed, because we address gender based violence and domestic violence issues on a daily basis”.

Killer Caught in Richards Bay

 Police in Richards Bay arrested a 19 year old who was wanted for the murder of 21 year old Khanya Mthembu. Mthembu was stabbed to death after having an altercation with the suspect on Sunday.



On Wednesday, the Richards Bay Crime Prevention Police Officers with the help of intelligence gathered as the suspect was hitchhiking and wanted to escape. The operation was successful when a police officer who was driving an unmarked police vehicle offered the suspect a lift leading to the arrest.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Richards Bay court on Friday.

Triple murder at Barbershop, 5 others left injured in Browns Farm

Western Cape police believe that revenge might be the reason behind the triple murder that occurred in Nyanga on Wednesday afternoon.

The three men, aged between 18 and 21, were in a barbershop when four men opened fire in Sheffield Road, Browns Farm. Five others were left injured.

‘’An initial investigation has revealed that four armed men approached the eight victims at around 13:15 at the barbershop, where two were shot on killed on the scene. Six men were admitted to hospital, and upon arrival a third male succumbed to death due to the extent of his injuries,’’ said Colonel Andrè Traut, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’We have reason to believe that the incident has been sparked by revenge, but as our investigation unfolds, the modus operandi will be determined in a bid to get to the bottom of the multiple murder and attempted murders,’’ he added.

Manhunt launched for alleged duo who murdered elderly woman in Kraaifontein

Police have called on the public to help find two suspects believed to be behind the murder of an elderly woman in Kraaifontein, three weeks ago.

The 64-year-old was shot and killed in Wallacedene after two suspects approached the victim under the pretext of purchasing meat from her.

‘’On Tuesday, 20 August 2024 at approximately 19:30, the 64-year-old female was shot and killed on the corner of Maroela and Ntongabini Streets, Wallacedene in Kraaifontein. Preliminary information gathered revealed that two suspects approached the victim under the pretext of purchasing meat from her. They allegedly followed the victim into her shack where the deceased was shot in the head. The suspects thereafter fled the scene on foot and have since evaded arrest. Tracking and tracing operations are part of the initiatives taken by police to trace the suspects,’’ said Lt Col Malcolm Pojie, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Police have since offered up to R100 000 reward to find the alleged perpetrators.

The suspects have been identified as 29-year-old Siyabonga Kholakele and 32-year-old Yanele Mangweni.

Elsies River CPF member killed in Clarke Estate

Elsies River Community Policing Forum (CPF) is mourning the loss of its own. 49-year-old Clinton Treu was killed in the early hours of Sunday in Clarkes Estate, after he was allegedly involved in a struggle with hijackers.

Western Cape police said they are probing the matter.

‘’Elsiesriver detectives are hard at work, following up on information at their disposal, in a bid to apprehend the suspects who are responsible for killing a 49-year-old man in Kerner Street in Clarke Estate in the Early hours of Sunday 08 September 2024,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi Western Cape SAPS spokesperson.

‘’Upon their arrival at the crime scene at around 02:35, they found the victim who sustained gunshots to his head. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspect/s fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack now forms part of the police investigation,’’ he added.

The Elsies River CPF said Treu was an integral member of the Community in Blue Patrollers and had committed most of his free time to ensure the safety of the community.

According to the Community in Blue Coordinator, Joshua Jackson, True was an asset to the team, he was passionate about being part of the CIB's and according to his family Clinton was always enthusiastic to go out on patrols.

‘’Mr Jackson emphasised that our immediate priority is to support the family during this difficult time and to remember the remarkable man Clinton True was and to continue to honor his legacy by building the Community in Blue as a structure that can truly make a difference in Elsies River,’’ said Hamish Arries, Elsies River CPF chairperson, in a statement.

‘’The entire CPF, NHW and Community Safety family is devastated by this loss, and the fact that someone who dedicated himself to fight crime in our community has to die as a victim and a statistic of this very crimes he was so committed to eradicate. Chief Arries added that we will not remember Clinton as a victim but as a hero who was prepared to stand his ground and paid with his life doing so,’’ read the statement

Meanwhile, the Western Cape’s CPF board has called on SAPS to activate its 72-hour activation plan to find the perpetrators.

‘’The WCPCPB [Western Cape Provincial Community Policing Board] urges the South African Police Service (SAPS) to initiate the 72-hour activation plan and exhaust all resources to bring the perpetrators to justice. We demand a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned, to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for this heinous crime,’’ said Justin Kumlehn, WC CPF member.

‘’Although off-duty at the time of the incident, the patroller was a steadfast guardian of the Elsies River community, working tirelessly alongside others to keep the public safe from harm. His selfless commitment to ensuring the safety of others will not be forgotten,’’ he added.

The Western Cape’s Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Anroux Marais, says Treu’s presence will be missed.

“I mourn the death of Clinton, and I salute him as a committed Neighbourhood Watch member.  The Western Cape is poorer, and Elsies River a more dangerous place, without him. I plan to visit Clinton’s loved ones soon. I call on the public to assist in apprehending his killers. Together, we can beat crime in the Western Cape. Let that be our commitment, in the loving memory of what Clinton stood for.’’

Three Suspected Criminals Killed by community members in Johannesburg

Gauteng police have launched a murder investigation after three suspected criminals were set ablaze by community members in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg.

The incident occurred early this morning, following allegations that the trio had robbed and killed a 29-year-old man from the neighbourhood.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, the community organized a search for the suspects and discovered them hiding in a container.

They were taken to Sebokeng Zone-12, where they were assaulted and set on fire. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni has condemned this act of lawlessness.
