Three suspects still on foot as they escaped Athlone Magistrates Court

Western Cape police are still on the hunt for three suspects who escaped from the Athlone Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

The three men, Kjuma Ningo, Vuyani Bonkolo and Khaya Supulana (all from Gugulethu), are part of a group of five men who escaped from the holding cells at the court.

The police’s Malcolm Pojie said one suspect was arrested shortly after the escape and another on Thursday morning.

‘’The search for three of the outstanding escapees continue with various addresses visited and clues being pursued, but without success thus far. Meanwhile, two of the escapees were rearrested yesterday [Wednesday} and are currently incarcerated,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

The suspects are between the ages 20 and 33.

Police appealed to the community to refrain from approaching or confronting these escapees as they are deemed to be armed and dangerous. They stand accused of serious offences such as murder, attempted murder, Assault and robberies aggravated as well as the possession of stolen property.

Five men escapes police custody from Athlone Magistrate’s Court

Police are searching for five men who escaped from police custody in Athlone on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police, six trial-awaiting prisoners overpowered a police officer and disarmed him while they were waiting for transport following their appearance at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

They escaped on foot after firing several shots at the police. No one was injured or killed during the shooting.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Malcolm Pojie, says one of the suspects has since been rearrested.

The escapees are accused of serious offences, such as murder, attempted murder, assault, aggravated robbery, and possession of stolen property.

"Our provincial detectives will probe that," said Pojie.

Police warned members of the public to report any suspicious people or the whereabouts of these escapees to the nearest police station.
