The Western Cape MEC of Education Donald
Grant said he is disappointed that there has been a call for educators to take
a day off work to attend a march.
Grant said once again the best interest of
learners is being placed at risk.
The South African Democratic Teachers Union will be protesting today demanding Basic Education Minister Angie Motshega and her director general Bobby Soobrayan to resign.
Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said
learners should not honour the call to join the march, because this happens at
a time whereby the learners should be busy focusing on their studies.
Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance has
called on the Human Rights Commission to investigate the South African
Democratic Teachers Union’s intimidation of learners.
DA’s MP of Basic Education Annette
Lovermore said she has tabled a motion that Parliament debate appropriate
measures to prevent union activity from interfering with the constitutional
right of learners to receive basic education.
