City of Cape Town increasing efforts to address title deeds backlog

The City of Cape Town said it is making every effort to address title deed backlogs.

Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements Benedicta van Minnen said transferring title deeds is possibly one of the greatest methods to bring redress to residents who were prohibited from owning property during the reign of the apartheid regime.

Minnen said there have been several delays to this process based on a number of factors.

Minnen said one is historic delays due to zoning issues, the transfer of tenancies in of the third purchases as well as transfers where either payment has not been made or the person living within the unit are not the people whom the home legally belongs to.

“We are currently investigating the process and we are working towards extraditing ensuring that these are transferred to the rightful people and seen as part of the reconciliation program of the City of Cape Town” Minnen added.
