EC residents blocked traffic lane to Bisho Government’s state house

Traffic between Breidbach and government’s State House in Bhisho was disrupted as residents of the township protested over housing.

About 50 protesters, under the banner of the Breidbach Home Seekers, closed of a lane on the main road leading to the province’s seat of government.

According to community leader Denzel Smith the Buffalo City Metro had identified land for building houses but defaulted on the promise.

Last month the residents embarked on a violent protest that shutdown the N2 as petrol bombs and rubber bullets flew.

100 DA supporters joined EFF

About 100 people, said to be former supporters or members of the DA in Cape Town, joined the EFF on Thursday morning.

Among them were former Democratic Alliance Cape Agulhas Ward 1 councillor Warnick October and former Ravensmead councillor Freddie Kearns.

Back in 2014, Kearns left the DA for the Patriotic Alliance, founded by Gayton McKenzie and his business associate Kenny Kunene.

The group, from Ravensmead and Gugulethu, cited various concerns about poverty and service delivery.

However, Western Cape Economic Freedom Fighters head Bernard Joseph welcomed them with open arms, but said they would not burn the few DA shirts that were left on the table.

EC Health Dept to cough R3 billion due to negligence

The Mthatha Hospital Complex is being sued for more than R3-billion in medical negligence cases.

In the year from last April to this March, more than 60 cases have been filed against Mthatha Regional, Nelson Mandela Central and Bedford Orthopaedic hospitals.

Complaints include brain damage, epilepsy, paralysis, lost vision and cuts on a baby’s face.

Eastern Cape Daily Dispatch reported earlier this month that the Eastern Cape health department had already paid out close to R12-billion in negligence claims between April 2004 and March 31 this year – an average of R1-billion a year.

The latest litigation statistics reveal that most of the claims are for R15-million to R20-million.

The highest amount is R32-million.

SABC lays charges against axed journalists

Reports have emerged that three SABC journalists were charged by the public broadcaster today, following the suspension of three other journalists last week.

It is believed that the three staff members wrote a letter over the weekend to COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng, expressing their dissatisfaction with how operations have been managed at the SABC over the last few weeks.

Meanwhile, SABC board chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe on Tuesday said there was no revolt at the SABC, he said he said he was surprised people thought there was an internal revolt.

City apologises for delays on waste collection due to strike

The City of Cape Town says it would like to advise residents that, due to strike action by the waste collection contractor’s staff, refuse collection will be delayed in the Helderberg, Philippi and False Bay areas.

Residents in affected areas are requested to please leave their bins out until they are serviced.

In a statement, the City says it apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause, and would like to assure residents that extra resources are being made available to clear the backlog as quickly as possible.

Cape Town Int. Airport won a prestigious international award

The Cape Town International Airport has won a prestigious international award for the success of the region’s air access initiatives.

Western Cape MEC for Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, says “Improved access played a role in increasing the number of tourists to the Western Cape.”

He says “Following the win, Cape Town International Airport has been shortlisted for the World Routes Awards in Chengdu, China on September 26, 2016.”

Spokesperson for MEC Winde, Bronwynne Jooste says, Alan Winde, congratulated Deon Cloete, the general manager of Cape Town International Airport and the team.

“Our tourism sector experienced an excellent 2015/16 peak season. The efforts of our air access team helped make this happen. We are achieving growth in international arrivals and departures from several markets”, says Winde

ANC denies having a hand on recent protests in WC

The African National Congress in the Western Cape on Thursday denied any of its structures were involved in the violent protests that erupted on Borcherds Quarry Road in Cape Town on Wednesday night, leading to the closure of the N2 highway.

The party says, the acts were a cover-up, covering up opportunistic crimes.

This was in response to the allegation that the protests were sparked by unhappiness with the ANC’s Ward 40 councillor candidate, Bongani Ngcombolo.

Dissatisfaction with its candidate lists has allegedly plagued the ANC as a whole, with the Western Cape also affected.

Its most recent challenges included the defecting of former councillor Loyiso Nkohla, who has endorsed the Democratic Alliance after years of rallying grassroots support for the ANC.

IPID Investigates after Beaufort west teen found dead in holding cell

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the murder of a teenage detainee who was allegedly killed by a cellmate at the Beaufort West Police Station.

Officers found 18-year-old Gerdo Karelse's body in a holding cell earlier this week. 

He had had been arrested on Sunday following a fight.

Officers were inspecting holding cells when they discovered Karelse in a pool of blood.

He'd been sharing the cell with another man, who has since been charged with his murder.

The matter is now being investigated by IPID.

IPID's Robbie Raburabu says, Police are investigating the murder but they are still investigating the circumstances around the death, as to whether the prescript of police standing orders were applied in terms of visitation.

Meanwhile, the accused has appeared in court on a charge of murder. He'll be back in the dock next week.

Sodwana racist says he will simply refuse to appear in court

Controversial Sodwana Bay Guest House ownerAndre Slade says his decisions are not guided by the Constitution and he'll simply refuse to appear in court if summonsed.

Yesterday, KwaZulu-Natal Tourism MEC Sihle Zikalala opened a case of hate speech, illegal operation and tax evasion after Slade said his lodge doesn't accommodate black people or government officials.

The KwaZulu-Natal government says it has suspended Slade’s licence to operate.

His partner Kathrine says she stands by her man, and also believes black people were created to be servants.

At the same time, business owners and community members in Sodwana Bay are calling on law enforcement authorities to deal harshly with Slade.

Zikalala says he's agreed with local chiefs that Slade must be evicted from this area.

Hlaudi Motsoeneng condemns 'agenda to destabilise SABC'

South African Broadcasting Corporation COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng says there's an agenda to try and destabilise the broadcaster, but insists that investors are on board and he has the support of both viewers and listeners.

Yesterday, chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe called an urgent staff meeting and announced that James Aguma has been appointed as acting CEO after Jimi Matthews resigned on Monday.

Three senior reporters also sent a letter to Motsoeneng, speaking out against decisions they say are eroding the integrity of the corporation.

At the same time, three other employees have been suspended for questioning editorial policies.

ANC investigating Vandalism of its campaign posters

The ANC on Wednesday said it would investigate the vandalism of its campaign posters in Fish Hoek and close the fence on such hooligans.

Provincial secretary Faiez Jacobs said in a statement they view such acts, particularly messages on the stickers pasted on their posters, as a sign of political intolerance and lack of respect for the democratic space which the masses of our people have fought and bled for.

The posters allegedly believed to have been defaced on Tuesday, with the vandals appearing to have only focused on posters bearing a photo of President Jacob Zuma.

A teenager killed by a fellow prisoner

A teenager has died after he was assaulted, allegedly by a fellow detainee at the Beaufort West police station.

It’s believed the 29-year-old man accosted the 18-year-old while in the holding cells yesterday.

The police's Malcolm Poje says, Subsequently we have arrested a 29-year-old suspect who was a co-detainee in the same cell.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death

Man injured in a taxi and light motor vehicle collision in Rondebosch

One man was injured this morning after a taxi and light motor vehicle collided on Rondebosch Road in Rondebosch in the Western Cape.

Paramedics say the driver of the light motor vehicle was assessed and found to have escaped injury.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says “ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the light motor vehicle parked on the pavement while the taxi sat in the middle of the road.”

He says “Paramedics assessed five people from the taxi and found that only the driver had sustained any injuries.”

Paramedics treated the man and transported him to Groote Schuur Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the light motor vehicle was assessed and found to have escaped injury.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Grahamstown still facing water crisis amid National Festival

Grahamstown is facing another scary water crisis days before thousands of visitors pour into the city for the National Arts Festival.

One of the city’s major pumping stations flooded on Sunday, damaging pumps and leaving huge paths of the city without water.

Grahamstown East, some parts of the CBD and Rhodes University and many high-lying areas were left without water.

Water pressure in other parts of the city remained dismally low late yesterday afternoon.

Makana municipality, with support from Amatola Water, the cooperative governance and traditional affairs department and Sarah Baartman district municipality yesterday moved swiftly to try and resolve the water disaster.

Matters were made worse by veld fires burning wildly south of Grahamstown near the N2.

8 suspects arrested for robbery in Muizenberg

On Monday, Western Cape Muizenberg Police arrested eight suspects for robbery. It is believed that a pizza delivery person was held up at gun point in Midmar Road Sheraton Park, after a pizza was ordered from a local pizza shop in Tokai.

Police Spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says “The 23 year old victim was robbed of pizzas, an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellular telephone and his delivery scooter.”

He however managed to escape and a local resident gave him a lift back to the pizza store.

The motorbike, which was fitted with a tracking device, was traced to Avenue La Brenton in Coniston Park.

He says “Muizenberg SAPS members swiftly responded and assisted the complainant by proceeding to the address, where they recovered the stolen motorbike and arrested eight persons for the possession thereof.”

The suspects, three females aged 28, 30 and 37 respectively and five males aged between 25 and 68, were arrested and detained at Muizenberg SAPS on charges of robbery and possession of stolen property. He added.

The suspects are due to appear in court soon.

Man thrown out of moving train, seriously injured

A 40-year-old man was left seriously injured this afternoon after he was apparently thrown from a moving train near the Brackenfell Train Station in Brackenfell in the Western Cape.

Paramedic’s spokesperson Russel Meiring says the exact details surrounding this incident are subject to the investigations of local authorities.

Meiring says “ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene after the patient’s friend had apparently witnessed the incident and called ER24.”

He says “Local authorities stopped all the traffic on the rails and allowed paramedic’s access to the patient, found lying next to the tracks.”

On assessment, it was discovered that the man had sustained serious injuries to both his legs and well as one of his arms, leaving him in a serious condition, Meiring adds

Paramedics immediately began their treatment and initiated advanced life support interventions to stabilise the patient.

Once treated, the patient was transported to Mediclinic Cape Gate for urgent treatment, he concluded. 

President Jacob Zuma has released a statement strongly condemning protest violence.

President Jacob Zuma says communities must break their silence and report those taking the country backwards by destroying public property.

Last week, saw violent protests in Tshwane, which led to five people being killed and more than a dozen buses being torched.

The South African Communist Party has charged five of its members in connection with the unrest in the capital, but the ANC is still investigating whether any of its members were involved.

Last night, Zuma released a statement strongly condemning the violence.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa  says it’s lost over R330 million in less than a year due to theft of its cables, vandalism and arson.

Prasa says between April and May alone, 20 of its trains were set alight, costing the company over R200 million.

Acting group CEO Nathi Khena revealed the staggering figure in Braamfontein yesterday.

Prasa says the Western Cape is worst affected with damages with amounting to almost R120 million, followed by Gauteng with R90 million

Most parts of Grahamstown left without water

Most of Grahamstown East, the CBD and parts of Rhodes University were left without water, while water pressure in other parts of the city was miserably low.

Makana Municipality assisted by Amatola Water and other municipalities moved swiftly to try and resolve the water disaster, which could prove a major blow to the Grahamstown Arts festival.

By midmorning today, the municipality reported that the failure of a gland follower in the second pump on the non-drive end had caused the flooding.

Meiring said the municipality was treating the situation as a disaster.

In a statement, the Congress of the People says Jimi Matthews’ resignation is the severest impeachment of both Hlaudi Motsoeneng as well as of the ANC.

COPE spokesperson Dennis Bloem says there is not one single brave and moral person in the whole of the ANC to speak up against the harm that Hlaudi Motsoeneng is doing to the SABC and to South Africa.

“The congress of the people welcomes the resignation of Jimi Mathews. We are saying that was the right step in the right direction. We have always asked ourselves as the Congress of the people how can Jimi Mathews really fit in such an organization that does not have morals anymore.”

WCED expected to employ 10,000 jobless matriculants

The Western Cape Education Department says it will employ 10,000 jobless matriculates over the next three years.

 The department says it has signed an agreement with the National Treasury Jobs Fund to finance the project.

Education MEC Debbie Schafer says the programme aims to curb South Africa's high unemployment rate by creating more opportunities for the youth.  

Schafer says it will also give the matriculants, who will work as school assistants, exposure to different career paths.

WC MEC will hand over safety Kiosk in Kenilworth

WC MEC for Community Safety, Dan Plato will today hand over a safety Kiosk in Kenilworth.

In a statement, Plato says the Safety Kiosk will be utilized for crime prevention by increasing visibility in hotspot areas and through daily operations and blitzes in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement.

The handover of the kiosk in Kenilworth today forms part of the delivery of the Safety Kiosks under the new Safety Partnerships which will see the roll out of 40 Safety Kiosks by the Department of Community Safety and relevant safety stakeholders and will enable communities to play an active role in identifying and resolving safety concerns that exist within their neighbourhoods.

SANEF requests a meeting with ANN7 Editor following dismissal of eight staff members

The South African National Editors Forum says it will request a meeting with ANN7 Editor Moegsien Williams following the alleged dismissal of eight staff members at the television station.

It's understood the employees were fired on Friday and a further 12 others received final written warnings.

The group allegedly chased African National Congress Youth League President Collen Maine away from their Midrand offices in April, when he tried to address them following an open letter sent out on behalf of Oakbay workers.

The letter was an appeal to four South African banks to restore relations with the Gupta-owned company saying their livelihoods were at stake.

He says calm has been restored in Tshwane, and Didiza and party leaders were on the ground campaigning in various parts of the capital over the weekend.

Khayelitsha teen murder accused men back in court today

The bail application of the two men accused of the rape and murder of Sinoxolo Mafevuka, who was found dead in a toilet, is expected to take place in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court today.

The two people arrested are cousins of her boyfriend, and before she died they had apparently confronted her about leaving a bar with another man.

During their last appearance Investigating Officer Isaac Tshabalala told Magistrate Xolani Menyiwe in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court that the 19-year-old's boyfriend was still being investigated in connection with the case.

Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu visited the area after her murder and demanded to know why the investigation was taking so long.

Tshabalala also spoke of the difficulty investigators encountered when trying to extract DNA evidence for the case because water had run over Sinoxolo's body.

The magistrate has ordered that the cousins not be named.

South African Artist Black Coffee,Makes history

The South African government has congratulated DJ Black Coffee who walked away with a BET award in Los Angeles last night.

Black Coffee has become the first South African to win the prestigious award in the category Best International Act: Africa. 

The well renowned DJ was up against fellow local musicians, AKA and Cassper Nyovest who were also nominated. 

South Africans alike have taken to social media to congratulate the We Dance Again hit maker. 

The Arts and Culture Department’s Lisa Combrinck said that Black Coffee has contributed a new chapter to South African history, culture and music for receiving this award.

Minister says Business raiding won't be tolerated

The raiding of small businesses in Tshwane was unacceptable and would not be tolerated, Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said today.

The violence had reversed gains government had made in harmonising the relationships between locals and traders of foreign origin, Zulu said. 

Dozens of shops were looted this week in Tshwane as residents protested after the African National Congress announced Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate. 

Five people died in one week during the violent protests. 

Zulu today said she condemns the looting in the strongest possible terms. 

Government says it needs a further R40 million to assist farmers and municipalities during the drought.

The Western Cape government says it needs a further R40 million to assist farmers and municipalities during the ongoing drought.

The province expects the dry season to persist as dam levels are dangerously low, despite heavy rain this week.

Meetings are happening behind closed doors to come up with an action plan to lessen the impact.

Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde says the initial application required about R80 million for drought relief.

He says the province is trying to raise more funds.

Parliament's ad hoc committee says the process of finding Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s successor will be transparent, adding that the interviews of the candidates will be broadcast live on TV.

The nomination process closed on Friday.  Former president Thabo Mbeki and former first lady Graca Machel have both indicated that they will not be available for the job.

After seven year at the helm, Madonsela’s term comes to an end in October.

Parliament's ad hoc committee chair Makhosi Khoza says the process will be made extremely transparent.

 Khoza says the public will be kept in the loop throughout the process.

Transport officials launch youth road safety summit in Pretoria

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has arranged a two-day national youth summit on road safety.

The event is being held in Pretoria under the theme, ‘Being Safe is Cool’.

Peters has been joined by transport MECs, a delegation from the United Nations and other stakeholders.

She says the summit is aimed at encouraging the youth of South Africa to participate meaningfully and decisively in road safety to reduce road killings.

Business owners call for arrests

Business owners in Tshwane have appealed for those behind the violence and looting of shops in the townships to be arrested, adding the crime is killing their livelihood.

The African National Congress’ Tshwane mayoral candidateThoko Didiza visited the capital's CBD yesterday, where she met with taxi drivers and local residents.

This was Didiza's first interaction with the people of Tshwane since her appointment which sparked violent protests.

Five people were killed and at least 200 arrested in the demonstrations.

SABC says the banning of protest visuals will not affect factual reporting.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation  says while it will not be airing footage of violent protests, this will not impact on factual reporting by the public broadcaster.

It presented its reasoning behind the decision not to broadcast footage of violent protests where property is destroyed.

In a statement to by COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng last month, he said the reason is to prevent copycat behaviour.

The SABC also said broadcasting footage of violent protests was affecting brand South Africa internationally and discouraged foreign investment.

Media Monitoring Africa together with three other civil organisations have been presenting their cases against the SABC to Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s  complaints committee.

SABC representative Bantubonke Dakota says the SABC will show images of destruction of property, but only after the incidents, to prevent different communities copying what they see on TV.

He says while protesters vandalising property will not be aired, the result of the protest will be broadcast.

The Inkatha Freedom Party has officially launched its Local Government Election Manifesto in Cape Town today. IFP President Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi in his address says those who vote have the power to hire and fire.

He says “It is always good to be with the people of Cape Town. There is a spirit of goodwill here that is quite unique and it never fails to encourage me. 

"No matter what kind of hardship you face, there is always an enduring sense of hope. You are my kind of people, because I too will never give up.”

He added that “Something needs to be done to get municipalities working so that they fulfil their constitutional mandate and actually meet the people’s needs.”

“Fortunately, you and I are in control of making that change. We are not helpless victims of a corrupt system, at the mercy of weak leadership. We are, in fact, the most powerful players in this system, because democracy places the power in the hands of voters.” Buthelezi concluded.

3 SABC Journalists suspended for disagreeing with management

Three of SABC journalists have been suspend for allegedly disagreeing with an instruction not to cover a Right to Know campaign protest against a decision announced by the Public Broadcaster not to show visuals of violent protest.

Meanwhile, Right to Know Campaign Communications Officer Busi Matabane says in a statement, this latest move by management is outrageous.

She added that this latest purge, at a time of growing concern about the state of the broadcaster and an ICASA hearing into SABC censorship, makes it clear that Hlaudi has only contempt for those who work under him, for ethos and ethics of public broadcasting, and for the public to whom he ought to account.

Matabane emphasided that they demand the removal of Hlaudi before he can do further damage to the SABC.

Right2Know to stand in solidarity with organisations at a picket outside ICASA

Right2Know activists will today stand in solidarity with allied organisations at a picket outside ICASA.

The regulator's Complaints and Compliance Committee will be hearing a formal complaint brought by Media Monitoring Africa, SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition and the Freedom of Expression Institute regarding the SABC's decision to ban visuals of the destruction of property in protests across its news and current affairs bulletins.

Right2Know Communicator Busi Mtabane said “Right2Know campaign activists will today stand in solidarity with allied organisations at a picket outside ICASA.”

Meanwhile, DA will also picket outside the ICASA headquarters ahead of a hearing on the SABC’s ban on the airing of footage of violent protest.

DA National Spokesperson Phumzile Van Damme says “We believe South Africans need to be shown the truth, nothing but the truth about the conditions in South Africa.”

We therefore today will be supporting the civil society organisations that brought that to ICASA.” She added.

Stellenbosch to consider isiXhosa in its new language policy

Stellenbosch University says the development of isiXhosa as an academic language forms part of its new language policy.

Earlier this week, the institution announced that from January, both English and Afrikaans will receive equal status at the institution. 

Some students and academics have been vocal in their calls for the language policy to be repaired.

The university’s Susan Van Der Merwe says the university wants to bring in other languages.

DA Leader, Mmusi Maimane, will address a mass public meeting in PE's Northern Areas. 

Maimane, who will be joined by DA Mayoral Candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, will introduce the DA's capable and committed team of Northern Areas candidates to the community. 

The meeting will be followed by the flighting of the DA's first mayoral poster. 

The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay at this year's municipal election, to lead in a clean government focused on delivering better services, stopping corruption and creating jobs.
