Absa Premiership coaches have expressed their unhappiness about the month long break that will take place during January.
The break is aimed at giving Bafana Bafana enough time to prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
They will go on camp from January the 15th.
Orlando Pirates coach, Ruud Krol told the media the break is not good for the league and would disrupt the team `s plans.
Santos coach, Boebie Solomons says though it does not help complaining, it is not an ideal situation that any coach will like.

Fuel prices expected drop

Motorists will get a break as the price of 93 octane petrol will fall by nine-cents a litre and that of 95 octane by 6-cents on the sixth of next month.
The Department of Energy says diesel prices will also decrease by 14-cents a litre.
Wholesale paraffin falls by 12-cents and illuminating paraffin by 16-cents per litre.
The drop in the price of petrol means that motorists in Gauteng will pay 7-rand-86-cents a litre while a litre will cost 7-rand-63-cents at the coast.
The Department says the cut in prices is largely due to a decrease in the international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin and a firmer rand.

Four suspects arrested for murder

Four suspects aged between 22 and 38 will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of robbery and murder.
This follows after a 20 year old Somalian national was stabbed with a sharp object in a business robbery at Kunene Street, Leiden in Delft.
When the unsuspected shopkeeper opened the door the suspect attacked him by stabbing him in the left side of his chest.
Police spokesperson Captain Joe Wilson says the suspect then insisted that the shopkeeper open the door and assists him.
“When the unsuspected shopkeeper opened the door the suspect attacked him by stabbing him with a sharp object in the left side of his chest,” Wilson said.
Wilson says suddenly, six other suspects joined him in ransacking the shop.
The shopkeeper sustained a wound to the chest and subsequently died on the scene.

Western Cape police have arrested two of its members for theft and robbery and a third for attempted murder.
Police spokesperson says a female station commander allegedly removed 18 large bags of dagga from an evidence store.
She with the assistance of another police woman transported the bags to an address in Nyanga with a police vehicle.
And 33-year-old Constable Llewellyn Anthony of Table Bay Harbour police station has been arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder.
It is alleged that he robbed four Chinese men at gun point of 250-rands in Table Bay Harbour.
He also ran over one of the men with his police vehicle. The victim is still in hospital in a serious condition.

As New Year celebrations draw near tonight, revellers have been urged to behave.
Police have reiterated that they will not tolerate serious misbehaviour before and during the celebrations.
Major centres such as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town have declared to strengthen their festive season safety campaigns.
Two areas that will receive particular attention are the Cape Town city centre and Hillbrow.
As a precaution taverns and nightclubs in Hillbrow have been asked to close at six this evening.

Contents of a dagga plant confiscated in a ‘Rastafarian garden’

Ocean View police have confiscated the contents of a ‘Rastafarian garden’ believed to be grown for smoking yesterday.
Inspector Nkosikho Mzuku says the police were looking for a suspect in the area when they noticed the dagga plant.
The plant was growing in flower beds around one of the shacks.
Police removed a total of 750 plants, worth about R5000.
“We arrested a 36 year old female and three males aged between 39 and 42 years old for possession of dagga,” said Mzuku.
Mzuku says the suspects will appear before the Simons town magistrate’s court today on charges of possession of dagga.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has been appointed the new chancellor of Limpopo’s University of Venda.
Motlanthe will replace businessman Cyril Ramaphosa who served two terms.
The university’s vice chancellor Professor Peter Mbati says he hoped Motlanthe’s involvement with the institution will help it overcome numerous academic and infrastructure challenges.
Over the past two years the government had pumped over R400 million into the university to improve its infrastructure and teaching models.

Public assistance requested in tracing missing 35 year old woman

Manenberg police together with the Pink Ladies organization is requesting the assistance of the public in tracing a missing 35 year old woman.
Shireen Paulse who lives in Gugulethu was last seen two weeks ago after visiting her mother on the 19th of December in Manenberg.
Dessie Rechner of the Pink Ladies organization described Paulse as short and with tattoos.
“She is small built with a tattoo of a play boy bunny with the words ‘Playgirl’ on her left arm,” said Rechner.
Rechner says Paulse has no teeth upper and four missing teeth in the lower mouth.

The trust has help educate more than 20-thousand orphans and vulnerable children.
Zuma told thousands of people at his annual Christmas party for children in Nkandla that the trust had already started helping in Limpopo and would soon start operating in the Eastern Cape and North West.

The Proteas are under tremendous pressure going into the third Test against England at Newlands on Sunday after losing the second Test by an innings and 98 runs in Durban today.
The first Test was drawn so the visitors go one up in the series with two to play.
The Proteas selectors will have to think long and hard after the Durban performance where South Africa’s players saw all sorts of demons in the pitch while England made merry on the flat surface.
The local bowlers also failed dismally while English spinner Graeme Swann took five for 54 and fast bowler Stuart Broad took four for 43 in South Africa’s second innings.

A farm worker, who sustained serious burn wounds while fighting the fire that has been burning in the Western Cape’s Overberg region since Thursday, has died in hospital.
John Europa from the farm Moddervlei near Elim was driving a tractor on Saturday that was used to fight the fire, when he was overcome by the flames.
Overberg disaster manager Reinard Geldenhuys says while two blazes have been brought under control, a fire is still burning in the Greyton area.

The Proteas collapsed like a deflated balloon against England in the second Test at Kingsmead in Durban today to lose by an innings and 98 runs.
Local fans were stunned as spinner Graeme Swann produced yet another magnificent bowling effort to take five for 54.
He was ably assisted by Stuart Broad who weighed in with four for 43.
South Africa scored 343 and 133 on a pitch that appeared to frighten the life out of the local batsmen.
England, on the other hand, made merry on the flat surface and scored 574 for nine declared for one of their best performances in many years.

Johannesburg learner Catherine Paverd is celebrating the 11 distinctions which make her South Africa's top Independent Examinations Board matriculant.
Catherine studied at the De La Salle Holy Cross College. The eight-thousand IEB matrics achieved a 97-percent pass rate.
Catherine plans to do a bio-medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand next year. But she says she has one more immediate obstacle: her driving licence exam next month.

The Civil Aviation Authority has completed its on-site investigation of Monday’s light aeroplane crash near Harrismith in the Free State.
Four members of the same family died when the Beechcraft Bonanza in which they were travelling from Vereeniging in Gauteng to Margate in KwaZulu-Natal crashed into the Platberg Mountain.
The CAA’s Kabelo Ledwaba says the wreckage will be moved to Johannesburg for further investigation.

Amalgamated Beverages Industries (ABI) is to investigate reports of intimidation and violence during a week-long strike by workers.
ABI managing director John Ustas in a statement said they are actively seeking evidence of such unlawful activity and will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.
Ustas said they will not tolerate the intimidation of workers or violence against them.
ABI said it had beefed up its security since the beginning of the strike on Tuesday last week.
FAWU- aligned workers are demanding a 9.5 per cent wage increment, a 45 hour working week and overtime pay.

President Jacob Zuma is set to marry his fifth wife. According to a relative the President will tie the knot with Thobeka Madiba next Monday.
Zuma’s other fiancé, Gloria Bongi Ngema from Durban, had presented gifts (umbondo) to the Zuma family on Monday.
Umbondo is the last Zulu traditional ceremony before the wedding. It is not known when Zuma will tie the knot with Ngema.
Zuma married his third wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma, two years ago during a traditional wedding at his Nkandla home.
The President was legally married to Kate Zuma who died in 2000 and Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma whom he divorced in 1998.
The Presidency has refused to comment on the upcoming wedding, saying it is a family affair.

Zimbabwe authorities blamed inadequate for congestion Beitbridge border

Zimbabwean authorities have blamed inadequate parking as a reason for congestion at the Beitbridge border post on the South African side of the border.
Beitbridge is among the busiest border posts in the Southern African Development Community, with volumes rising to more than 12-thousand travellers and three-and-a-half-thousand vehicles a day during the holidays.
Media reports says this forced travellers and long-distance truck drivers to queue for hours on end in recent days to be cleared before crossing the border.

More than a thousand international protesters, including 16 South Africans led by Judge Siraj Desai, have converged on Cairo.
They hope to participate in the Gaza Freedom March, despite the Egyptian government announcing that it would refuse them entry.
The protestors planned to march with Palestinians to the Erez crossing, the closed border between Israel and Gaza to protest against what they regard as the Israeli siege of Gaza.
Media reports that some of the protestors have already bore the wrath of the Egyptian police.

The union had criticised the bank, accusing it of discriminating against white employees.
Solidarity claims black FNB workers are given first preference when they apply for bank-funded bursaries.
Solidarity’s Reint Dykema says the decision to grant financial assistance should not be determined by the applicants’ race.

The Presidency says the annual party, organised by the Jacob Zuma Education Trust, is being held at Mnyakanya High School in the KwaNxamalala area.
The President is a patron of the trust.
The South African National Defence Force is promoting careers in the military at the event. Since its inception in 1995, the trust has educated more than 20-thousand underprivileged children.

Eskom says the massive loan it received for the construction of two power plants is not enough and it needs more money.
In a bid to fund programmes to produce more power and address the country’s electricity crisis, Eskom has signed a loan agreement with five French banks for some 13-billion rands.
However, media reported that this is a drop in the ocean compared to the more than 300-billion rands Eskom needs to fund its expansion project.
South Africans can expect to pay much more for power next year as Eskom is expected to be granted a tariff hike.

Semenya’s lawyer discredit story about suing ASA and IAAF

Athlete Caster Semenya's legal team has rubbished claims that she intends suing the International Association of Athletics Federations for 900-million rands for leaking information about gender testing that was being carried out on her.
Media reported that a website claimed Semenya intended suing the IAAF and Athletics South Africa.
The story stated that Semenya would sue the ASA for 134-million rands for its role in the gender testing row.
However, Semenya's lawyer, Greg Nott, says that he does not know where the information on the website had come from.
He summed up by saying the report is nonsense.

Two brothers, aged 27 and 35, and the wife of the older brother, went to the store and pretended to be customers.
According to police the couple entered the shop while the other man waited outside.
While the store owner assisted the wife, her husband stormed into the pay-point room a few metres away, where he demanded cash from the owner’s teenage son.
A scuffle ensued after the father confronted the man.
According to police other customers and members of the community came to the owner’s rescue and the three suspects were taken into the yard where they were allegedly beaten.

CAA probe Free State plane crash

The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating yesterday’s plane crash which claimed the lives of four people in Harrismith in the Free State.
The plane crashed into the side of the Platberg Mountain in thick mist instantly killing two men and two women.
It is understood there was a technical problem that lead to the pilot diverting from his route towards Margate.
The aeroplane crashed into a very inaccessible part of the mountain.
According to reports the victims were Dr Johan Adriaan Venter, from Vereeniging, his wife Elzabé, both aged 61, their son Christiaan and his wife Christine, both aged 29 and both chartered accountants.

Breakthrough in multiple murder case

North West Police have arrested three men in connection with the death of a businesswoman and four others in Lethabong near Rustenburg yesterday.
Miriam Khoza, who owned a supermarket, butchery and liquor store, was found dead on Christmas Day at her home in Vula section.
Four other people, a man in his forties and three teenage boys were also killed.
Her Nissan Navara was stolen and found abandoned in Brits. Police arrested the three following a tip-off.
Items suspected of being stolen from Khoza’s house were found in the house where the men were arrested.

The Robben Island Museum says its main ferry is out of action due to an electrical fault.
But alternative arrangements have been made for visitors. The ferry, the Sikhululekile, is expected to resume operations from tomorrow.
Technicians could not repair the faulty part and a new component had to be ordered.
Spokesperson Dennis Cruywagen says the problems were first reported during the last trip on Christmas Day.

Members of the Food and Allied Workers’ Union will intensify their strike at South African Breweries’ soft drinks division, trading as ABI Coke.
Fawu says the company was not prepared during negotiations to concede to its demand for a nine-and-a-half-percent wage increment and a moratorium on the use of labour brokers.
The union is negotiating with workers in SAB’s beer division and other subsidiaries for a sympathy strike.

Free State police say three initiation school teachers have been arrested after the bodies of two initiates were found at a school in Dewetsdorp.
Police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says there is evidence that the 19-year-old and 21-year-old initiates may have been assaulted.
Police are also investigating assault cases involving 12 other boys at the initiation school. More arrests are expected.

A 30-year-old mother, with two children among four passengers in her car, is among three-thousand drivers arrested countrywide for driving under the influence of alcohol over the Christmas period.
The Transport Department says she was arrested on Christmas Eve in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, where the most drunk drivers were caught.
No less than 280-thousand drivers have been fined for speeding this month. Preliminary reports show that 840 people have died in 654 fatal crashes so far.

Metro Police confiscated 146 bottles of wine and beer on the Gordon’s Bay and Strand beach areas on Saturday.
Metro Police’s Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro says since the beginning of the festive season metro police officers have been deployed on all the city’s priority beaches and no serious incidents were reported.
“The deployment of the equestrian unit on the beaches assists us in getting to situations much quicker and the mounted members can also observe and monitor any volatile situation from a higher position and further distance.
“Apart from maintaining high visibility on beaches, our members are continuing with the execution of search warrants at suspected drug houses, traffic policing and the enforcement of the city’s by-laws, said Metro Police Chief Yolanda Faro.

A 12 year old boy has been reported missing in Stellenbosch.
Yamelisa Samyala was last seen on Christmas Day when he requested money from his father to go to a nearby barber shop.
Samyala was reported missing on the 27th of December. He has short hair, brown eyes and weight 40kg.

NSRI kept busy over the weekend

The National Sea Rescue Institute had their hands full this weekend. Two people drowned in separate incidents in Gordon’s Bay.
The NSRI says the first body was discovered at Strand beach yesterday morning following a drowning incident the previous day.
The second body was recovered in Cool Bay following reports that five people were swept out to sea.
All five were out of the water but paramedics declared one person dead on the scene.
In another incident in Bakovern, a man was rushed to hospital following a near drowning.
He was brought to shore by law enforcement rescue swimmers and transported to hospital.

A teenage boy has been found stabbed to death on a toilet in Ratanda outside of Heidelberg.
Police spokesperson Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate says the 16 year old was found dead, seated on a toilet with a stab wound on his left rib.
The owner of the house apparently made the gruesome discovery when he went to his outside toilet early yesterday morning.
The boy was last seen the previous night at a party in the area.
No arrests have been made .

Report on tampering with crime statistics received

Police have finally received a report on the alleged tampering with crime statistics at several police stations in the Western Cape.
The Independent Complaints Directorate confirmed this week that it had sent the preliminary report to Western Cape provincial police commissioner Mzwandile Petros two weeks ago.
It has been reported the ICD was asked to investigate the allegations by Western Cape community safety MEC Lennit Max in June after SAPS members had claimed they were asked to register cases as inquiries, instead of registering them on the crime administration system.

The mutilated body of a three year old toddler was found yesterday, just hours after she was reported missing to Thabong police in the Free State.
A spokesperson says the girl, Onele Galata, went missing on Christmas Day and was reported missing yesterday morning.
She was found at a Hostel in the area.

The president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, Gideon Sam, has paid tribute to struggle hero Dennis Brutus, who died, aged 85.
Brutus helped to get South Africa suspended from international sport during apartheid.
It eventually led to South Africa’s expulsion from the Olympic Games in 1970.
Sam says Brutus was a stalwart in liberating South African sport from the grips of apartheid.

Would-be airplane bomber identified

The would-be bomber who tried to ignite an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines Flight landing in Detroit has been identified as Nigerian Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab.
The 23 year old is an engineering student at University College London.
CNN says he claims to have been acting on the instructions of al-Qaeda.
One of the 278 passengers on board jumped over others and restrained Abdulmatallab.
He sustained burn wounds in the incident.

Spokesperson Logan Maistry says more than 600 people have already been killed on South African roads this month.
The department continued to appeal to motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

The world is today remembering 2004’s Boxing Day tsunami which wiped out more than 230 000 people from Indonesia to Thailand, India and Sri Lanka.
Aceh on the island of Sumatra was the hardest hit after an earthquake registering more than nine on the Richter Scale unleashed killer waves over a vast area.
Indonesia is still struggling to cope with more than 5200 known tsunami orphans.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says the 34 year old man had been doing 162 kilometres per hour on the N1 north.
Police recovered a rifle and two magazines from his car.
He is also wanted for armed robbery and car hijacking.

Four killed as vehicle overturns

Four people have died after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned near Kimberley.
A police spokesman, Captain Tony Modise, said the car had been travelling on the Barkly West-Winsorton Road yesterday morning when its tyre apparently burst.
The vehicle swerved off the road and overturned.
The five occupants had been flung out of the car.
A woman, aged 34, and a man, aged 23, died on the scene. Two female passengers died on their way to hospital.
The driver, aged 22, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened.

One person died and two were injured in a Christmas morning accident on the N1 travelling towards Colesburg, paramedics said on Friday.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle overturned and rolled several times.
One of the occupants died on the scene due to the severe injuries he had sustained. Another critically injured passenger was airlifted to Pelenomi Hospital.
The third person sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Tshwane community safety department spokesman Console Tleane said a VW Polo collided with a cash-in-transit van on the Aubrey Matlala road early last night.
The two vehicles then lost control and hit five taxis at a makeshift taxi rank nearby.
A baby and two men who had been in one of the taxis were killed instantly.
Firefighters and paramedics had to use the jaws of life to remove their bodies.

According to Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro, the area became volatile after the shooting of gang member Andrew Lloyd.
Police were informed that there might be retaliation by rival gangs.
Five people were arrested for possession of drugs .
In Mamre, eight people were arrested for riotous behaviour when the metro police conducted a stop and search operation.
Two of the suspects were also charged with possession of narcotics.
One person was also arrested for drunk driving.

Trade union calls for unroadworthy buses and taxis to be banned

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has called for buses and taxis that do not comply with the safety regulations to be banned from the roads.
NUMSA spokesperson Mphumzi Maqungo was reacting to the latest head-on collision between a bus and a taxi in the Eastern Cape that claimed 12 lives yesterday.
He called on the MEC responsible for transport in the province to launch an intensive and immediate investigation into the accident and to ban those buses and taxis that do not comply with safety regulations.
Earlier, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele called on public transport drivers to refuse to undertake long-distance trips without a relief driver.
Ndebele says preliminary reports suggest fatigue may have contributed to the crash.

Suspected Beacon Valley drug dealer behind bars

A tip off from the public has led to the arrest of an alleged drug dealer in Beacon Valley in Mitchells Plain yesterday.
Metro police reacted to a complaint received from a resident, reporting that stolen goods were being sold at a house in Rugby Street in the area.
“The complainant identified the house and the officers searched the house. No stolen goods were found, but cash and drugs were found and one person was arrested,” said spokesperson Nowellen Peterson.
In a statement, Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro said they “will not stop bringing the drug dealers to book”.
She added that although their focus shifted to the beaches, their members will continue with the execution of search warrants and raid suspected drug houses.

In a statement, Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro said they “will not stop bringing the drug dealers to book”.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on public transport drivers to refuse to undertake long-distance trips without a relief driver.
The call comes after yet another dreadful crash involving a bus and a taxi on the N2 between Mthatha and Kokstad in the Eastern Cape.
Twelve people lost their lives and five were injured.

Body of missing 75 year old found

The body of 75 year old Nozilile Adelaide Jekana who was reported missing two weeks ago, has been found.
Hikers at the back of Constantia Mountain made the discovery yesterday, between two beacons.
The body of the deceased was recovered from the mountain with the assistance of Metro Rescue Services and identified by family members this morning.
She went missing from her home in Mandela Park, Hout Bay and suffered from Alzheimer's.
An extensive search and investigation was done, but with no success at the time.
Hout Bay Police have opened an inquest case-docket for investigation.
No foul play is suspected at this stage, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Further police investigations are underway.

City zero-tolerant on alcohol consumption on beaches

The City’s Law Enforcement officers will be enforcing bylaws which make it illegal for anyone to consume alcohol on public beaches this festive weekend.
Metro Police, Traffic Services and Specialised Services will also assist Law Enforcement officers with patrolling beaches.
Vehicle check points and officer patrols at beach access points will be set up at all major beaches to stop persons bringing alcohol onto the beaches.

the action is part of the City’s comprehensive safety and cleansing plan for the festive season.
“The City’s seven Blue Flag Beaches; Big Bay in Bloubergstrand, Clifton Fourth Beach, Mnandi Beach, Bikini Beach in Gordon’s Bay, Muizenberg, Strandfontein and a section of Camps Bay Beach will be prioritised,” said Bosman.
An additional 170 seasonal law enforcement officers have been deployed, bringing the number of officers patrolling the beaches to 410. The officers will patrol on foot and in vehicles and respond to emergency calls and complaints received.
People caught with alcohol will be fined and the alcohol confiscated immediately.
“Residents and holiday makers are encouraged not to consume alcohol on beaches as law enforcement authorities will have a zero tolerance approach,” added Bosman.

11 killed in Eastern Cape head on collision

There has been another horror accident involving a bus and a taxi in the Eastern Cape in which 11 people lost their lives.
Six people were injured in the accident on the N2 between Mthatha and Qumbu.
Arrive Alive spokesperson Tshepo Machea says five passengers from the taxi survived and 11 died on the scene.
The bus driver was the only person injured from the bus.
Machea says the road is straight and it is suspected that fatigue played a role in the head-on collision.

SA Airlink fleet grounded

The Civil Aviation Authority says it had to suspend SA Airlink’s 14 Jetstream planes as it could no longer guarantee the safety and airworthiness of the fleet.
The decision by the Civil Aviation Authority to ground the Jetstream fleet as of midnight last night comes after the operator experienced yet another incident in Nelspruit yesterday.
Smoke emerged from one of the engines, resulting in the aircraft aborting take-off due to low oil pressure.
Earlier this month a SA Airlink plane missed the runway at George Airport in the Southern Cape while in September an Airlink plane went down in a residential area in Durban shortly after take-off.
CAA has apologised to all holidaymakers who may be left stranded this festive season due to the decision.

In a statement Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said despite continuous warnings, motorists are still displaying a blatant disregard for the law.
The ministry says since the start of the festive season, more than 700 public transport vehicles have been removed from the country’s roads.
These included 400 buses and 250 taxis.
Ndebele warned public transport operators that law enforcement operations targeting specifically public transport vehicles, will be intensified.

SA Breweries still in stock despite strike

South African Breweries says it is confident that operations at its soft drinks division, ABI, will not suffer any disruptions due to a strike.
Members of the Food and Allied Workers Union are demanding a 9.5% pay hike, while ABI is offering 7.8%.
SAB spokesperson Robyn Chalmers says the company has supplies for at least seven days.
ABI is one of five companies which bottle Coca-Cola products.
Fawu says if the deadlock continues, it will call for a “sympathy strike” at other bottling plants.

This after the aunt had heard a radio report in connection with the missing children.
The sisters have been re-united with their mother at Muizenberg SAPS.
Wynberg Social Services have been contacted and will be interviewing the family

Southern Cape police have asked for assistance in identifying a couple who were killed when they were hit by a truck while riding a tandem bicycle near Mossel Bay.
Spokesperson Wollie Fourie says the couple were struck from behind about 20 kilometres from the town.
It is believed they were tourists.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the economy will lose more than R150 billion dollars, or more than a trillion rands, if state-owned power utility Eskom follows through plans to raise its tariffs.
Sacci says raising power costs by 35 % a year over the next three years will boost inflation and cost as many as half a million jobs.
Eskom has applied to Nersa to raise tariffs to help fund a R385 billion expansion plan.
The plan is believed to be in place to avoid a repeat of power outages that shut mines for five days last year.

The two were last seen playing in the front of their residence in Seawinds.
Rukaya has been described as tall and slim with brown eyes, short plaited black hair and a brown complexion.
She has a speech impairment and a scar under her chin. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a pink T-shirt, pink shorts and a pair of silver sandals.

A third person has been arrested as an accomplice in connection with the armed robbery at the Kenilworth Shopping Centre on Sunday.
A 21 year old man was arrested by Hawk investigators late last night at his home in Philippi-East.

Kwazulu-Natal paramedics say bystanders reported that a man believed to be in his thirties took his wife hostage in their shack before taking her life and then his own.
ER 24 paramedics arrived on the scene but found the couple already dead. Police are investigating a murder and suicide.

Matric maths paper was fair

The education quality assurance body Umalusi says the matric maths paper was fair.
Umalusi chairperson John Volmink reacted to reports that around 80-percent of matriculants could fail maths if the marks were not adjusted.
Umalusi says an adjustment will only be made if the maths marks are unacceptably low compared to last year's.
The results will be assessed next week. Any adjustment will not affect the release of matric results on the 7th of next month.

Correctional Services has given President Jacob Zuma’s former financial adviser Schabir Shaik a formal warning after he admitted to violating his parole conditions.
A statement by Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says further violations may result in a warrant of detention being issued, which could result in Shaiks’ re-incarceration. His parole conditions have also been tightened.
In its reaction, the Democratic Alliance has slammed Mapisa-Nqakula’s decision as a cop-out and a cover-up of note.
The DA’s James Selfe says it is becoming increasingly clear that there is nothing medically wrong with Shaik, and that there never was. Selfe adds that the decision to impose so-called “sanctions” on Shaik, involving little more than restricting his free time, constitutes a slap on the wrist.

A man believed to be in his late 20's was found dead this morning on the train track near the Ndabeni train station.
Paramedics that arrived on the scene shortly after 08:00 found the man still half way under the wheels of the train.
He sustained fatal injuries and was cut in half by the train.
Paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.
Train operations on the track were halted during the recovery operation.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak says it is not clear why the man crossed the tracks at that time.
The man was alone and no family or friends could be located on the scene.
Vermaak says police will conduct an investigation.

Police urge communities to work together with them in avoiding crime activities that are happening in communities.
Gugulethu police spokesperson Captain Elliot Sinyangana says it is indeed a great concern the rate young people get themselves involved in criminal activities at their tender age instead of gearing in sport activities.
“It is a great sadness when a person comes to the station requesting an advice as a graduate on how he /she can clear the criminal record in her /his name in order to get the job,” said Sinyangana.
Sinyangana says 36 young people have been arrested as from the 1st of this month until early hours of this morning.
Police also appeal to the Liquor Outlets Owners, not to buy stolen items.
“They must not purchase anything sold to them by the youth, unless a proof of ownership has been produced,” added Sinyangana

Family, friends and colleagues of Tshabalala Msimang are in attendance.
Family friend Sophie De Bruyn referred to Tshabalala Msimang as a daughter of the revolution and spoke of her discipline and commitment to the struggle.
The former minister died last week complications related to her liver transplant.

A 36 year old man from Philippi has been detained for questioning in connection with the armed robbery that occurred at the Kenilworth Shopping Centre on Sunday.
Police say the man went to the Gugulethu police station early yesterday morning to report that he was robbed of his licensed firearm in Lansdowne on Saturday.
“He alleged that three unknown men robbed him at gun point of his 9mm pistol, while he was walking on his way home. He did not sustain any injuries during the alleged incident,” said police spokesperson Inspector November Filander.
Inspector Filander adds the same firearm was confiscated by police at the armed robbery scene on Sunday.
“The 36 year old is not charge for any crime at this stage, but is only detained for questioning. If he is found to be linked to the Kenilworth robbery, he could face an additional charge of perjury relating the possible false case of robbery of his firearm,” said Filander.

Man due to appear in court for rape and attempted murder

A 25 year old man is due to appear in the George Magistrate’s court today on charges of rape and attempted murder.
This is after he and his accomplice entered a house in George and confronted the couple at the weekend.
One of the suspects took the 65 year old male victim outside and strangled him. The victim is currently in hospital.
They then stab the 64 year old female victim several times in the abdomen and once in her neck.
Police’s Captain Bernadine Styne says the victim had a rope around her neck.
She was also taken to a hospital where she is in a critical condition.
Styne says when police arrived on the scene in Takbok Street, Denneoord they found the husband outside the house and his wife in the main bedroom.
“We are investigating the possibility that she might have been raped during the incident,” said Styne.
The suspects also searched the house and several items were put in bags but not taken.
“No sign of forced entry could be found” adds Styne.
The suspect was arrested at a house in Thembalethu yesterday afternoon. While the second one is still at large.

A 25 year old man is due to appear in the George Magistrate’s court today on charges of rape and attempted murder.
This is after he and his accomplice entered a house in George and confronted the couple at the weekend.
One of the suspects took the 65 year old male victim outside and strangled him. The victim is currently in hospital.
They then stab the 64 year old female victim several times in the abdomen and once in her neck.
Police’s Captain Bernadine Styne says the victim had a rope around her neck.
She was also taken to a hospital where she is in a critical condition.
Styne says when police arrived on the scene in Takbok Street, Denneoord they found the husband outside the house and his wife in the main bedroom.
“We are investigating the possibility that she might have been raped during the incident,” said Styne.
The suspects also searched the house and several items were put in bags but not taken.
“No sign of forced entry could be found” adds Styne.
The suspect was arrested at a house in Thembalethu yesterday afternoon. While the second one is still at large.

Former Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang’s special official funeral service will take place at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart in Pretoria today.
Tshabalala-Msimang died last week from complications related to a liver transplant.
Her body will be cremated at the Benoni crematorium later today.
The former Health Minister has been praised for sacrificing her life to the struggle for freedom during memorial services held in Pretoria and Durban yesterday.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed to the media that Shaik had applied for a pardon and it was being considered by the president.

The mother, who allegedly left her two-year-old son in her car in scorching heat in Bloemfontein while she went to buy chocolates and cigarettes, is a nurse at a private hospital in the city.
Media reports say the 28-year-old woman issued a statement to police from her house in the city.
A complaint of child neglect is being investigated against her, while the incident will also be reported to social services.
The little boy was apparently locked in the car in 35 degrees heat.

Correctional Services officials in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating fresh allegations that the terminally ill fraudster Shabir Shaik has violated his parole and swore at a news photographer.
This follows reports yesterday showing that Shaik had left his home in violation of the official hours of his parole.
Shaik denies the allegations. Correctional Services acting district commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele confirmed to the media that he had ordered an urgent investigation.

A man is behind bars for armed robbery which occurred in Kenilworth Shopping Centre yesterday.
Police say two men entered a retail store inside the centre demanded the money bag to a female employee which was in her possession at gunpoint.
One of the suspects then fired a shot at the employee, injuring her in the left arm.
He then grabbed the money bag, and fled the store together with the second suspect.
Inspector November Filander says as the suspects exited the centre they fled in different directions.
“One of the suspects who fled in the direction of Garfield Road, was confronted by a Metro police officer, which led to a shoot-out, resulting in the Metro police officer been shot in his left hand. The suspect then managed to rob the police officers of his marked police Opel Corsa” said Filander.
The suspect then drove in the direction of Repulse Road in Athlone where he was further confronted by police and Metro police officers, which led to another shoot-out resulting in the suspect being shot and wounded.
Police managed to apprehend the suspect and recovered a 9mm pistol, a cellular phone and a bag filled with money in his possession.
Initial investigations at the scene also led to the recovery of an abandoned 9mm pistol firearm under a stationery vehicle in the parking lot of the Centre.
“At this stage we believe that it could have been thrown under the vehicle by the second suspect, whilst in the process of fleeing from the scene” he said.
Police manage to arrest one of the suspects while the second one is still at large.
Investigations are continuing.

There is still no sign or indications as to the fate or whereabouts of missing UCT student.
21-year-old Duncan Mac Willliam from Constantia went missing after leaving the camp site at which he was staying in after telling friends that he was going to cross the Umfolozi River in St Lucia in the early hours of Sunday the 13th of this month.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says nobody has any idea what could have happened to the missing man, but it is believed he drowned in the river.

The Department of Health says doctors who have not yet received their Occupational Specific Dispensation payment will get it tomorrow.
The South African Medical Association said in a statement on Friday that many doctors had not been paid the once-off OSD bonus, months after they were supposed to have received it.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi was reportedly very upset when he was informed of the problem.
Health department spokesperson Charity Bengu now says doctors will be paid tomorrow, with the balance of payment being made on Thursday.

Disaster Management’s Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says a 29 year old man was burnt beyond recognition when a fire swept through the Wallacedene informal settlement near Kraaifontein.
In the second incident, 200 people were left homeless at Site B in Khayelitsha, when 60 dwellings were gutted.
Disaster Management officials are assisting with relief aid.

British researchers have found that smokers experience one mutation to their DNA for every 15 cigarettes they smoke.
The massive study mapped out the genetic blueprint of a lung cancer patient.
The study, published in two papers today in the journal Nature, says all cancers are caused by mistakes in the genetic code, which are mutations in DNA that can be triggered by environmental agents.
The scientists hope the results will help them understand the causes of cancer and to develop new treatments.

The civil rights initiative AfriForum today lodged a complaint against the convicted fraudster, Schabir Shaik, with the Parole Board.
The charge that Shaik violated his conditions of parole follows after many reports by the media that he drives around and even does shopping at times not allowed for by his parole conditions .
Shaik, former financial adviser to President Jacob Zuma, was released from the Durban Westville prison in March this year after serving 28 months of a 15-year jail term.
AfriForum’s Allana Bailey says they emphasises in the submission to the Parole Board that it is essential for the maintenance of the supreme authority of the law that the complaint should be investigated urgently and that firm action be taken against him, if it were to be found that he had indeed violated his parole conditions.
Bailey adds Shaik’s apparent disregard for his parole conditions sends a very disconcerting message regarding the supremacy of the law in South Africa.
“The actions of someone who had already obtained parole under highly questionable circumstances, should at all times remain above suspicion, but in his case, we see exactly the opposite,” she said.
The group say at a time when crime is out of control and when criminals appear to show no regard for the law, it is of prime importance that that strict action is taken against any person who violates conditions of parole in order to reiterate that no-one is above the law.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called for a partnership between the Department of Transport and the Labour Federation in order to enforce the eight working hours per day rule for public transport drivers.
The Minister’s call follows yet another horrific road crash involving a bus near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape yesterday where 10 people were reported killed after the driver of the bus lost control and crashed into a tavern.
According to preliminary reports, tiredness may have been a contributory factor to this crash.
Ndebele points out that no airliner is allowed to fly without a co-pilot and says road transport should not be any different.
Meanwhile, Western Cape Community Safety MEC Lennit Max says a full scale investigation has been launched into the accident at De Doorns in which six children and a 40-year-old woman died.
The victims were travelling in a bakkie that collided with a delivery truck from Gauteng.

“Nozolile Adelaide Jekane went missing two weeks ago from her home in Dontseyakhe, Mandela Park,” said police spokesperson Inspector Tanya Lesch.
She is originally from the Eastern Cape, Willowvale.
Jekane is reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.
“There was a possibly sighting in Somerset West,” added Lesch.

The accord drafted by South Africa, India, China and the US has been adopted by 28 nations at the UN climate summit and aims to have developed countries slash carbon emissions by up to eighty percent by 2050.

Five people, including four children were killed when a delivery truck collided with an Isuzu bakkie on the N1 Highway at the Sandhills turn-off in De Doorns this morning.
It is alleged that the delivery truck from Gauteng and the Isuzu bakkie from De Doorns were traveling in the same direction on the N1.
Police's Inspector November Filander says the driver of the truck then tried to overtake another vehicle but collided into the right front side of the white Isuzu bakkie which indicated to turn into Sandhills turn-off.
The driver of the bakkie was busy transporting 13 other people and the delivery truck was busy transporting grapes.
Five people were declared dead on the scene, while 8 people were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.
Both drivers of the truck and the bakkie got minor injuries.

The South African Medical Association says some doctors have not been paid the once off occupational specific dispensation gratuity payment months after they were supposed to have received it.
Sama calls in a statement on the Department of Health to uniformly and appropriately implement the OSD as agreed.

Due to severe water shortages in the Southern Cape, the Stormers have cancelled their January camp at Pinnacle Point in Mossel Bay.
The team will remain in Cape Town, where they will prepare for the coming season at the High Performance Centre in Bellville.
New recruits Bryan Habana and Jaque Fourie will join the squad on the 4th of next month.
The team will also welcome Argentinean international prop Eusebio Guinazu who became eligible for the Stormers after recently signing for Boland.

15 people injured as two taxis overturn

Fifteen people have been injured after two taxis overturned this morning.
A minibus taxi which was travelling in the direction of Mitchells Plain overturned on the R300, near Van Riebeeck Road injuring ten people.
In another incident a minibus taxi overturned on Francie Van Zijl Road, near Connaught Road, in Parow Valley, leaving five people injured.
ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadely said all the victims were taken to hospital.
“The injured sustained minor to moderate injuries were taken by ER24 and Metro EMS ambulances to Delft Day Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
Wadely said the second accident occurred just less than two hours after the first one.
For the first incident it is unknown what caused the accident, however, on the second one it is alleged that the right rear wheel of the taxi came loose and caused it to overturn.

14 year old Micheale Cotzee from Muizenberg has been reported missing.
Cotzee was last seen on Wednesday. It is unclear what she was wearing.

Drugs worth R100 000 confiscated in Uitsig

Two people have been arrested in Uitsig for being in possession of drugs worth R100 000.
Bonteheuwel officers were conducting a roadblock in Uitsig when they received information from members of the public that a white Colt bakkie may contain drugs.
“On receiving the information, the officers immediately pursued the vehicle and pulled it over in Geranium Street in Uitsig. The vehicle was searched and a bag containing 2000 Mandrax tablets with a total value of R100 000 was discovered.
“The quick response by these officers indicates their willingness to follow up information received from the public,” said Acting Metro Police Chief, Yolanda Faro.”

Fire in the city destroys households

Cape Town has been hit by two shack fires, leaving about 250 citizens homeless.
The city’s Disaster Management Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says two children were injured in the fire in Woodstock.
The fire destroyed about 39 shacks.
The children have been rushed to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
Meanwhile in Site B, Khayelitsha, about 40 shacks were demolished to the ground, but no injuries were reported.
Officials are providing essentials such as food, blankets and building material to help people rebuild their structures.

Urgent calls for action in Copenhagen

United States President Barack Obama has called on world leaders to come together at the United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen as time runs out to strike a deal.
Obama told delegates the international community's ability to take collective action was in doubt. Leaders have gathered for the final day of the summit amid uncertainty over the shape of any eventual deal.
A draft political agreement drawn up by a small group of countries was rejected during overnight discussions.
In his speech at the conference, President Jacob Zuma echoed Obama’s sentiments.
He said leaders needed to move with speed to finalise the areas of disagreement, in order to conclude a legally binding agreement for the sake of future generations.
Zuma reminded delegates that they had to seize their historical responsibility to act now to safeguard the future of humanity and the planet it inhabits.
Also in Copenhagen, Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo said the global battle for climate change would be won or lost at local level.
Speaking at an international conference organised by Local Governments for Sustainability, Masondo said it was unrealistic and unjust to expect communities and their local governments to carry the burden of climate change response on their own.
He said local government needed appropriate financing and capacity building mechanisms.
Masondo is the co-president of United Cities and Local Government, the representative global forum for municipalities.

Alcohol use big threat on country’s roads

Driving under the influence continues to threaten the safety of road users.
The Transport Department says more than two-thousand drunk drivers were arrested nationally between the 1st and the 16th of this month.
In that period, more than 300 000 vehicles and drivers were stopped and checked as part of the Festive Season Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign.
Of the two-thousand drivers arrested for drinking and driving, more than 500 were banned in the Eastern Cape alone and a further 320 in KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, road deaths are showing an alarming increase.
The Department says by yesterday, a total of 448 people had already been killed on South African roads this month.
It is almost double the fatalities over the same period last year, when 228 people died in traffic accidents.
Transport spokesperson Logan Maistry says of the 448 people killed so far this month, 126 were drivers, 184 passengers and 130 pedestrians.
A second horror crash within 24 hours in the Eastern Cape has claimed at least four lives.
A minibus taxi and a car collided near Mthatha last night. Six people were injured.
Yesterday, eight people were killed in an accident involving a 25-seater bus and a tow truck on the R-61 between Engcobo and Cofimvaba.

The Presidency has announced today that the late former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will be given a special official funeral.
In a statement the presidency says the funeral will be held at the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pretoria on Tuesday.
Charles Nqakula, former defence minister, now the government spokesperson for the funeral arrangements, says President Jacob Zuma has asked that flags, nationally, be flown at half mast in her honour.
Nqakula says the cortege will be dressed in the African National Congress flag.
He told the media a private night vigil would beheld at the Msimang family home on Monday.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will address an official memorial service for Thabalala-Msimang in the Pretoria City Hall on the same day.
Dr Mantombazana Elizabeth Tshabalala-Msimang died on Wednesday afternoon after suffering complications as a result of her liver transplant she had two years ago.

44% of near drownings reported in Gauteng

South Africa’s largest private hospital group, Netcare, warns that most drownings and near-drownings occur around the home and involve children less than four years of age.
Netcare’s head of trauma Mande Toubkin says another surprising statistic is that more than 44-percent of near-drownings recorded this year occurred in Gauteng.
Toubkin says one would have expected much higher percentages for coastal areas.

Kuils River police are searching for a suspect involved in an alleged break in at a shopping centre in the area.
Police were alerted of the incident by ADT security officials early this morning.
“An immediate search by police in the area, led to the arrest of a 34 year old male suspect in one of the nearby streets. He was found in possession of two bags containing an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Senior Superintendant Billy Jones.
The search for the other suspect, who is still at large, continues.
It is believed that the two suspects gained access through the roof of the shop.
They used explosives to gain access to an ATM inside the shop, from where the money was taken.
A case of theft is being investigated.
The suspect will appear in the Kuils River Magistrate Court soon.

Ocean View police together with the Pink ladies organisation are requesting the assistance of the public in tracing 10 year old Siyamthanda Mnandi.
Mnandi was last seen on the 16th of December at his home at around 18pm in the evening.
Siyamthanda suffers from Down’s syndrome; he was last seen playing with friends on site 5 in Ocean View.

This follows protests by union members around the country last week over alleged "racist practices" at the supermarket chain.
South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union spokesperson Mike Abrahams claims management has a racial bias about transformation in the company.
But Pick n Pay says it has on four separate occasions proposed that an independent commission of enquiry be conducted.
Saccawu has rejected the proposals.

The Independent Complaints Directorate has launched an investigation into the police killing of two suspected robbers during a hostage in Petrusburg in the Free State.
National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has reportedly commended the Special Task Force for killing the two hostage takers at Bainsvlei on Tuesday morning.
The hijackers allegedly attacked a farmer and his wife when their neighbour rushed to their assistance.
The neighbour was hijacked and held hostage for about 20 hours.
Police snipers eventually shot the hijackers dead.
ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini says in a statement the shooting is being investigated.

MKK 2009 in full swing

Activities are underway at the Media Kiodcracy Konference 2009, Bush Radio’s unique programme created to bring young people around the city under one umbrella to discuss issues that affect them through the media.
More than fivety young people and children as young as 10 years are participating in variuous acitivities from, television projects, online as well as radio programmes.
These activities are aimed at affording them the opportunity to attain different skills as well as to use the media to express their understanding of issues that affect them.
16 year-old Jamie-Lee James is hard at wok on the online group focusing on Child labour as their group’s topic.
“I’m doing online research about child labour and thereafter I need to write an article for the blog,” said an enthusiastic James.
She says the experience is awesome as she uses online tools like twitter to promote her ideas, something she says she only dreamt of.
Amongst the topics participants learn and use in their projects include gender based violence, substance abuse as well as child labour.
Another participant in the MKK 2009 programme 10 year-old Athenkosi Tshenese says she is extremely happy to be part of this year’s activites.
“We learn a lot of stuff with different topics in a very exciting way, which is very interactive and child friendly,” said Tshenese.
Apart form the activities Tshenese says she wants to be a social worker when she grows up because she wants to help her communities ans society from their problems.
The programme which kicked off with a opening conference held at the St Agnes primary school on Monday will end tomorrow Friday the 18th.

A severe drought in parts of the Western Cape has forced the National Disaster Management Centre to declare the Eden District a disaster area.
Provincial environmental affairs MEC Anton Bredell say the affected areas include Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
Water tariffs have been increased to cut consumption. Bredell says the affected municipalities have also been given 53-million-Rands to fund boreholes, desalination facilities and the treatment of effluent water.
Holiday makers are being informed about water restrictions.

Media reports her son-in-law Martin Kingston as saying details were still being finalised.

69 year old Tshabalala-Msimang passed away in a Johannesburg clinic yesterday, following complications from her liver transplant two years ago.
Meanwhile, former president Thabo Mbeki arrived at the Msimang residence in Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria, this afternoon to pay his respects to his ally and friend.
Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane are some of the other mourners supporting the family.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions has welcomed the announcement that soldiers in the South African National Defence Force will receive salary increases.
The salary increment which ranges from 2% to 65%, took effective from 1 December 2009.
President Jacob Zuma endorsed a recommendation from the interim Defence Service Commission that a Defence Force that will recapture and rekindle the spirit of patriotism, selflessness and love for the people of our country is needed.
“We share his hope that the increase will bring back pride and attract many young men and women to the calling of this nature,” the union federation said in statement.
Cosatu says however it does not agree that the establishment of a Defence Service Commission and its recommendation of a salary increase, in any way justify the banning of trade unions within the SANDF.
“The low levels of salaries revealed by the Commission confirm what the unions had been saying for many years that the soldiers had legitimate grievances about their levels of pay,” added the statement.
The Commission, which is appointed from above and not accountable to the rank and file, is no substitute for a trade union formed by and answerable to the membership.
While constitution guarantees the right of all workers, with no exclusions, to form and join trade unions, the union says will oppose strongly any move to ban unions in the armed forces.

While constitution guarantees the right of all workers, with no exclusions, to form and join trade unions, the union says will oppose strongly any move to ban unions in the armed forces.
Missing boy found

14 year old Kevin Carl Peterson who was reported missing has been found.
Pertesen was found unrharmed at his grandparents home in Elsies River this morning.
“The boy was spotted by a SAPS member who usually assists with the missing person,” said Superintendant Randall Stoffels.
He went missing from his home at Osborne Street in the CBD last week.
Police say they don’t suspect any foul play.
“We will close the docket of a missing person”, said Stoffels.
Five killed, four seriously injured in head on collision

Five people have died and four are in a serious condition after a Toyota and VW Jetta collided on Mew Way, near Spine Road in Khayelitsha last night.
The four of the victims were dead on arrival of emergency services. A fifth passenger died later at hospital.
“Rescue crews from Metro Rescue and the Fire Department had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate some of the patients from the mangled cars,” said ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley.
Police have registered a case of culpable homicide for investigation.

She died yesterday afternoon in a Johannesburg clinic at the age of 69 after complications set in following her liver transplant in 2007.
The African National Congress described Tshabalala-Msimang as someone who had dedicated her life to the struggle for justice and democracy.
Cosatu said her death was a great loss and added that she should be forgiven her mistakes.
Opposition parties sent their condolences to her family, with Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille describing Tshabalala-Msimang’s death as sad and quite shocking.
The Treatment Action Campaign also expressed its sadness, despite clashing with Tshabalala-Msimang often due to her opposition to anti-retroviral Aids drugs.

Zuma appoints SABC board

President Jacob Zuma has appointed former Arts and Culture minister, former KwaZulu-Natal premier and former ambassador to Japan, Ben Ngubane, as chairperson of the SABC board.
Information technology law specialist Felleng Sekha will serve as deputy chairperson.
Other well-known members of the broadcaster’s new board are journalist and author Pippa Green, another former ambassador Barbara Masekela and the Inkatha Freedom Party’s Suzanne Vos.

Professor Jeff Wing is quoted as saying Tshabalala-Msimang died in the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre & Medi-Clinic intensive care unit in Johannesburg this afternoon.
Wing says she died from complications related to her first liver transplant.
Tshabalala-Msimang was recently hospitalised with a serious liver condition which is reportedly related to her liver transplant in 2007.

Mugabe jets in to Copenhagen

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Copenhagen to take part in the final days of the United Nations climate talks. It will be attended by some 120 world leaders.
The European Union has banned Mugabe from travelling to its member states, including Denmark, as part of sanctions against selected Zimbabwean leaders.
But under UN rules, Mugabe holds diplomatic immunity. Danish television says local human rights organisations have denounced Mugabe's presence at the meeting.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has admitted that it may not be possible to get a new deal over global warming in Copenhagen.
Brown told the BBC the barriers were "huge" but "not impossible".
Talks are continuing in a bid to break the deadlock over emission cuts and financial aid for poorer countries.
President Jacob Zuma heads for the Copenhagen later this week.

Suspect arrested before couple’s murder is reported

Free State Police Commissioner Amon Mashigo has commended members of Potchefstroom Crime Prevention for arresting a suspect even before Free State police in the Vierfontein were made aware that a couple had been murdered.
Petrol attendants in Potchefstroom became suspicious yesterday when they saw a customer washing blood off his hands.
Police found blood in the car the suspect was driving and arrested the 36 year old man.
Further investigation led to the discovery of the bodies of a couple in their 60s.

As Commander-in-Chief of the National Defence Force, President Jacob Zuma has announced salary increases for members of the SANDF.

Two killed, 12 injured after taxi overturns

Two people have been killed and twelve others injured when a taxi overturned on Old Paarl Road in Bloekombos.
“When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found multiple people scattered around the taxi, of which two were dead on arrival,” said ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley.
Two other patients were in a serious condition and the remaining ten patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.
The patients were taken to surrounding hospitals by ER24 and Metro EMS ambulances for further treatment.
The cause of the incident is being investigated by the police.

Thousands sent home from packed summit

The United Nations is to send home thousands of non-governmental organization delegates from around the world as the venue of the climate change conference is now packed to capacity.
In a statement read out to an estimated 50 000 people, who had lined the area around Beller Center outside Copenhagen on Monday, the UN Climate Secretariat said, due to high demands and security concerns, it had no choice but to advise some people not to continue to stand in the more than a kilometer long queue.
Not even journalists were given an exception and a handful of registered media houses were given their access cards only around 6pm last night following persistent calls to the UN Press Office.
As an official broke the news some screamed and tried to break through the barricades but a strong police presence ensured that the angry crowd was kept at bay.
The people, who some came from as far afield as Mexico, stood in the queue despite the chilly and snowy weather. Meanwhile, security was stepped up in and around the city ahead of the arrival of about 100 heads of state and government on Thursday.
President Jacob Zuma is among the leaders who will meet in a closed session to deliberate a possible climate deal out of the discussions that have been taking place since last week.
Earlier on Monday, developing nations led by an African block stormed out of the conference room and plenary had to be briefly suspended.
It is understood that the group complained, amongst other things, of a lack of commitment to ambitious targets by developed nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The African National Congress says it is surprised and infuriated by reports that its deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe had said that ANC Youth League president Julius Malema would be brought before a disciplinary hearing.
The ANC’s Jackson Mthembu admits that Motlanthe told a media briefing that anyone who defied ANC instructions would be summoned to explain themselves.
He also reiterated that the party’s national executive committee had called on members to refrain from fuelling tensions.
Malema has been involved in a public spat with the Communist Party following his booing at the SACP’s conference in Limpopo.
The ANC plans to raise its displeasure with the SACP about the booing early next year.

De Lille says whites should seek forgiveness

Independent Democrats president Patricia de Lille says the Day of Reconciliation tomorrow is a day on which South Africans must remember the many people that gave their lives for the freedom of the country.
De Lille says we are a traumatized nation who still needs to define exactly who needs to make an effort towards reconciliation.
She says reconciliation is still extremely one-sided because there is a call on blacks to forgive whites for what happened in the past.
But there is no call on whites to reach out and seek forgiveness.
In her Reconciliation Day message, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille says in spite of the many challenges we face, every South African should be proud of the progress we have made in overcoming the legacy of the past.
Zille calls on everyone to continue to foster tolerance and compassion.

Inflation remains within target range

The consumer price index remained within the Reserve Bank’s target range in November.
Statistics South Africa says inflation rose just under the upper target limit of six-percent, to five-point-eight-percent last month.
The figure in October was five-point-nine-percent.
Stats SA also says employment in the formal, non-agricultural business sector decreased between the quarters ended June and September this year.
The September 2009 Quarterly Employment Statistics survey showed that the number of people employed in the sector decreased by about 79-thousand.
The survey estimates that the sector employed just more than eight-million people. This reflects an annual decrease of about 328-thousand employees.

Man behind bars for raping minor

A 28 year old man is arrested in Khayelitsha for raping a minor.
Police say a 14 year old girl was found in a house in RR section, Khayelitsha with two men.
Police went on the house to search for suspects involved in various criminal cases.
Police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama says on their arrival, they found the owner of the house and his friend as well two minor girls aged 13 and 14 years.
“One of the girls started crying and police immediately investigated the reason for her tears,” said Gama.
It was later established that the girl and her friend were sent to a nearby shop by her mother. The suspect spoke to her along the way and requested her to accompany him to the mentioned residence. When they arrived at the house, doors were locked and one of the men sexually assaulted the girl.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and the victim was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Gama says the suspect will soon appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape.
Police are hereby urging parents to educate their children around the dangers of accompanying strangers or adults without the consent of their parents at first.
