The Home Affairs department is being sued for R6.8 billion.
Victims of identity fraud and foreigners wrongfully detained are demanding about R414 million in damages.
The department is also facing lawsuits from people who have been declared dead and others who did not receive identity documents.
Earlier today Home Affairs director-general Mkuseni Apleni said the department will have to everything in its power to intensify the fight against fraud and corruption.

Five illegal diamond dealers have been arrested by undercover police officers.
The five men offered to pay R120 000 for raw uncut diamonds.
The syndicate included two foreigners a Zambian and a Zimbabwean as well as a man who claimed to be a jewellery shop owner and diamond evaluator at Musgrave Centre.
Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu said police officers had been following the suspects for a few hours and managed to make a breakthrough in the case after they presented themselves as potential clients on Wednesday.
He said a man approached police earlier in the week and told them he had bought an uncut diamond for R9 000. Captain Ndlovu added that informant and the officer had been selling the raw diamond for R285 000, but the evaluator and the Zambian offered R30 000 for it. The men agreed on a higher price and set up a meeting.
The undercover cops found the diamonds on one of the suspects.

Mark Scott-Crossley who is one of the men who threw a worker’s body to the lions in Hoedspruit in 2004 is now a free man.
Sarie Peens who is the Spokesperson for correctional services stated that Scott-Crossley's last day of parole was on the 29th of September.
Scott-Crossley was in 2005 sentenced to a life imprisonment, for assaulting and throwing Nelson Chisale who is a former employee to the lions.
The Supreme Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein in 2007 set aside his murder conviction for the death of Nelson Chisale.
This was due to the fact that the prosecution could not prove beyond reasonable doubt that Nelson Chisale was alive when he was thrown into the lion’s enclosure.

The Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development Department is today still waiting for the Health Department report, into the death of the 2-year-old girl who died in Soweto after being bitten by a dog.
The girl was believed to have died from getting the rabies.
Department spokesperson Makoko Lekola said “It will be shocking if the result comes positive.
We will be disturbed by that fact but we are calling on the community member to make sure that they vaccinate their pets because rabies is a killer disease”.
The Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development Department launched a campaign this week to fight the disease.
The department offered free vaccinations for residents in Soweto and provide vaccines in pets in Zola and Emdeni.

The body of the missing miner has been found at the Bambanani Mine in the Free State.
A miner died and several others were injured following a rockfall at the East Shaft of Harmony Gold's Bambanani Mine on Monday.
The Department of Mineral Resources said,” The search for the remaining missing miner at the Bambanani Mine in the Free State has ended with the recovery of his remains.”
The recovered miners body brings the death toll to two.
Departmental spokesperson Zingaphi Jakuja said,"The department extends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased."

Somerset West police officer arrested for murder

An off duty police officer has been arrested for murder as well as attempted murder on Tuesday evening, police said.
The shooting happened at the single quarters located at the Somerset West police station.
Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut says,” the female police officer entered the room of her 33-year-old male colleague and shot him in the stomach and his 26 year-old girlfriend who died on the scene.”
The 27-year-old is currently in police custody.
The suspect is due to make a court appearance in Somerset West once she’s been charged.

Anika Smit’s father have been questioned for three hours by police about his daughters murder.
Johan Smit says he has not been told outright that he is the main suspect in the murder case of his 17-year-old daughter.
“Smit had been questioned to “verify a few facts” about the case,” Gauteng police spokesperson Lungela Dlamini.
He added saying, a suspect is someone who has been arrested. Mr Smit has not been arrested. Anyone can be questioned when a case is being investigated.
Anika was found dead at her father’s home in March this year with her hands cut off at the wrist.
Initial charges of murder against Nico Venter, Anika’s boyfriend, was dropped two weeks ago without reason by the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.

SA Auditor General appointed International Chairman of Supreme Audit Institutions

Terence Nombembe who is the Auditor General of South Africa has been appointed as the chairmanship of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions at their congress in November.
The organization, which comprises 188 member states, is the second largest global organization after the United Nations.
Terence Nombembe said “among South Africa’s challenges is holding public sector officials accountable for wrongdoing”.
He also added that his appointment showed that the international community has confidence in South Africa. About 600 auditors-general, finance ministers and delegates from around the world will gather in Sandton for the congress in November.

Concerns over proposed National Health Insurance Scheme

Many stakeholders in the medical industry have raised their concerns regarding the implementation of the proposed National Health Insurance scheme.
The African National Congress said at its National General Council in Durban that they plan to implement the scheme by 2012.
The South African Medical Association and health care trade union Hospersa says government should set a realistic timeline when carrying out the scheme.
Hospersa general secretary, Noel Desfontaines says everyone has a role to play to ensure that the implementation of the new scheme works.

Eastern Cape clinic shut down after shooting threat

Nurses have fled from a rural clinic in the Transkei, Eastern Cape earlier this week.
A boyfriend of an HIV-positive threatened to shoot the nurses.
Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says the woman had tested HIV-positive and went to another clinic, with the same result.
He says the clinic was forced to close on Monday as all the nursing staff had run away, adding that they had still not returned to work by today.
Yesterday the district manager was trying to sort out the matter but was not successful.
The Provincial Health MEC Phumulo Masualle is expected to visit the area tomorrow in an effort to calm the situation.

Two policemen have been sentenced to 205 years in prison after they were found guilty of murder in an argument about genitals in Kwa-Zulu High Court.
Brian Steven were sentenced to 115 years for four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
His brother Leon was sentenced to 90 years in jail for four counts of murder and one of attempted murder.
Sawn Strydom, 32, Nic Jansen van Rensburg, 47, Rory Menzies, 41, and Bruce Edwards, 57 was shot dead on September 10, 2008.
It appeared the men had an argument over the size of a customer’s penis at the Merseyside Pub in Umbilo.

Two killed in a truck collision

Two men died and one is seriously injured when two trucks collided on the N2 near Clare Road Bridge earlier this morning.
It is still not known what caused the accident. A full investigation into the incident is underway.
Netcare911 Paramedics said they found a heavy goods vehicle and an articulated truck had burst through the roadside barrier and rolled several times before coming to rest at the foot a roadside embankment.
The bodies of the men were flung from both trucks. Both men sustained severe injuries and died on the scene.
The third man was seriously injured had to be freed using the Jaws of Life.
He was transported to the Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital for the specialist care he required.

Congress of South African Trade Union leader, Zwelinzima Vavi, has threatened to name and shame what he calls political hyenas that use money and company shares to buy support for their cause within the African National Congress Youth League.
This comes not so long after the conclusion of the ANC’s national general council in Durban.
In the conference, the party reined in the league over its premature raising of leadership succession issues.
Vavi said it was not the entire youth league that was in the wrong, but there were elements within it which advanced in what he described as dirty agendas of those who bought their support.

Clive Derby-Lewis who is convicted of killing SA Communist Party general secretary Chris Hani in 1993 might have to lose his leg.
Derby-Lewis underwent an operation yesterday, because he injured the leg a few weeks ago on a metal bed-base in a corridor at the Pretoria Central Prison.
Derby-Lewis' lawyer Marius Coertze said a second operation would also be necessary on the skin cancer on Derby-Lewis's right temple. His wife Gaye Derby-Lewis has been given special visiting rights.

A 16-year-old girl is extremely traumatized after being set alight in Philippi, Cape Town.
The incident happened last week, where a group of people in Philippi attacked and poured petrol on her before setting her alight.
The mother of the girl has told a media organization that her daughter is traumatized and in constant pain.
The 16-year-old girl suffered burns to most of her upper body, but she is now in a serious but stable condition.
The incident is believed to be gang-related and the seven minors have been arrested.

The PigSpotter hires a lawyer

The man famously known as PigSpotter has hired himself a lawyer in order to get the charges brought against him dropped.
The metro police opened a case of crimen injuria and obstructing and defeating the ends of justice at Sophiatown police station earlier this month.
His lawyer Karl Schuler has confirmed that he has approached the Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, to make a decision on if they will legally purse the PigSpotter or not.
The PigSpotter has become a celebrity; a few weeks back he made headlines, through alerting people about the locations of police speed traps in the Johannesburg area via the social networking site Twitter.

Cosatu said in a statement that Walmart is extremely “anti-union” and was an offence to workers’ rights wherever it operated.
Walmart has however promised to respect South African labour legislation.
Meanwhile, economists say Walmart’s takeover of local outfit Massmart will pose no threat to the employees of Game, Makro and Builders’ Warehouse.
They believe Walmart is more focused on using South Africa as a platform to access the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.
Economist Mike Schussler says because Walmart will be buying on a large scale, consumers will benefit more from the low prices of goods.

Eastern Cape police arrested two men for being in possession of dagga with a street value of R245 000.
The 35 and 39 year-old men were caught with nine bags of dagga.
They were arrested on Monday in Mount Fletcher and Mataliele when police spotted a suspicious Toyota Hilux bakkie.
Two uncut diamonds valued at R40 was found in the possession of a 25-year-old man, who was arrested during the operation.

African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema has still not attended an anger management class four months after attending a disciplinary hearing.
It is alleged that a “suitable” facility has not yet been found for the Youth Leader.
Malema recently received a public lashing from the ANC President Jacob Zuma, at the recently concluded ANC National General Council in Durban.
Malema has also reportedly not yet paid a R10 000 fine given to him by the hearing.
ANC spokesperson, Brian Sokutu says Malema must comply with any ruling handed down by the party’s disciplinary committee.

Today Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said “the state will spend more money on upgrading hospitals than it did on stadiums for the FIFA World Cup.
Billions of rand will be spent to improve healthcare by renovating rundown hospitals in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo”.
The government plans that the insurance scheme would change the face of public healthcare in the country, which the scheme would be paid for by taxpayers.

Yesterday a 47-year-old man crashed his microlight aircraft into a field outside of Brits in the North West and died.
He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and paramedics tried to stabilize his condition on the way to hospital but they were unsuccessful.
The hospital trauma unit staff declared him dead. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is investigating the cause of the accident.
Yesterday it was reported that overhead electrical lines were suspected to have played a part in the accident.
The CAA today is probing into the accident to find out exactly what happened.

The Raamkraal Centre which was an old prison complex was set alight after a fight between two groups of street children on Sunday.
The group used petrol to set the building the alight. Three boys aged between 15 and 20 yrs old were killed in the fire.
Police arrested three people and will face charges of murder and arson.

Yesterday the Gauteng Agricultural and Rural Development Department launched the vaccination campaign for Rabies.
Today Gauteng officials have confirmed a 2-year-old girl has died, possibly from rabies but it has not yet been confirmed if the cause of her death is rabies.
The girl from Dobsonville had been bitten by dogs recently and showed symptoms that are normally associated with rabies.
State veterinarian Michael de Buda said “The autopsy has not been done yet so we are not 100 percent sure yet”.
The drive to vaccinate dogs against rabies is continuing across the province.

Pretoria police are assisting a Zimbabwean man find his brother after the pair was allegedly beaten by Tshwane Metro Police officers.
It is alleged that the pair were dumped in separate locations after the incident.
James Chimatu has not seen his 17-year-old brother Leon since the incident two weeks ago.
Chimatu fears that his younger brother might be lost somewhere because he had only been in the country for two months or he could have been killed.
Tshwane metro officers allegedly detained Chimatu, and five other Zimbabweans including his brother at the Region six offices.
The matter has been handed over to the police to investigate.

Learners from Grade 1 to 12 in most schools in Mpumalanga have given up their September school holidays to support the province "Catch Up" programme.
Learners are attending school as normal until the 1st of October 2010.
Mpumalanga education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said “This would enable schools and pupils to recover lost time, complete the syllabus and fill gaps left as a result of the national teachers' strike, which recently brought schooling to a standstill in many areas of the country”.
Zwane also added that the provincial education department has established learning centers for Grade 12’s which is operational on Saturdays and Sundays.

Elphia Dlamini 42-years-old from Cape Town has been jailed for seven years.
Dlamini a flight attendant for South African Airways has been found guilty of attempting to smuggle cocaine into the United Kingdom.
UK Border Agency officials arrested Elphia Dlamini on the 26th of June after she tried to conceal more than 220-thousand-Rands worth of the drugs in her undergarments.
She first appeared in the Uxbridge Magistrate's Court in August where she pleaded guilty for importing a Class A drug into the country.
She was sentenced on Friday in the Isleworth Crown Court.

A 47-year-old man crashed his microlight aircraft into a field outside of Brits in the North West and died.
When paramedics arrived on the scene the man was in critical condition.
He sustained injuries to his head, chest, as well as broken bones.
He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and paramedics tried to stabilise his condition on the way to hospital but they were unsuccessful.
The hospital trauma unit staff declared him dead.
The cause of the crash is not yet known but overhead electrical lines are suspected to have played part.

Part-time matric students must register to re-write old matric curriculum exams by the 30th of September.
The Gauteng Department of Education says candidates who have credits from the old matric curriculum and would like to rewrite some subjects to get their Senior Certificate have until the end of this month to register.
The old curriculum has been phased out since 2008, but candidates have the opportunity to rewrite subjects until May and June in 2011.
A list of examination centers in the candidates area can be obtained by contacting their nearest district office.
Candidates must present a copy of their identity document and a statement of results in order to register for the exams.

President Jacob Zuma said he would make sure that Julius Malema goes to political school as ordered by the party’s disciplinary committee.
This comes after the ruling introduced a new culture of enforcing decisions.
At this point, Malema has only issued a public apology for his actions since the disciplinary hearing.
Political expert, Harold Pakendorf says there is no doubt that the time has come for President Zuma to act against the ANC Youth League leader.
The two have been on each other’s case for months, with Zuma most recently calling Malema to order through his opening and closing speeches at the recently-concluded ANC National General Council in Durban.

Two men have been shot dead when they tried to rob a church in Pinetown on Monday.
Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said police received a tip-off on Sunday that there was a robbery planned at the Roman Catholic church.
When the service was finished at 6pm the robbers followed the priest thinking he would have offertories worth R60 000 in his possession. The alleged robbers held the priest at gunpoint.
The men was approached by police and failed to co-operate. The suspects then fired shots at police and police fired back.
Mdunge said two of the suspects were seriously injured and a third suspect had dog bites on his hand and wrist from police dogs. The fourth suspect fled the scene, police are still looking for him. A 9mm pistol and a .3 revolver pistol was recovered.
An armed robbery case and an inquest docket for the two men who were killed by the police have been opened.

The campaign is aiming at fighting the spread of the highly-contagious disease that can be transmitted to humans.
Several cases have been reported and confirmed in the western and southern Johannesburg.
The campaign has kicked off in Soweto at the Kopanong community centre.
Pets can be vaccinated for free at any mobile SPCA clinic.

Researchers today released a study stating that South Africans are in need of health and social services to provide effective care for people older than 50.
The study is entitled Growing older in Africa and Asia: Multicentre study on ageing, health and well-being. In the study it states that older woman are under increasing pressure to take over as the bread winners of their homes.
Professor Kathleen Kahn from Wits University said "In this new reality, older women face additional responsibilities such as nursing their sick adult children and taking care of their grandchildren. In many households, older people have also become the main bread winners through their social pension, which is sometimes the family's only source of income."
She added saying "The high HIV prevalence, together with an ageing population and the emerging epidemic of non-communicable diseases, will put immense pressure on already weak health services as well as on society as a whole, with important changes in household structure and in the roles and responsibilities of older people".

On Sunday, a minibus taxi lost control outside Heidelberg and killed three people, Gauteng paramedics said.

Three rhino poacher suspects have been arrested over the weekend in the Kruger National Park.
Two poachers will appear in court on Monday.
Warrant Officer Oubaas Coetzer said they were allegedly found in possession of rhino horns and rifles.
"Game rangers were patrolling the park when they came across two men with rifles. The men pointed their guns at police and shots were fired from both sides," Coetzer said.
"One of the poachers was injured in his shoulder. Two rhino horns were recovered and we found the carcass."
Police are investigating the possibility that the suspects could be linked to a syndicate.

The New Age newspaper publisher is facing charges of obstruction of justice.

This follows an operation he had on Tuesday to remove dead tissue from his right leg which is said to be gangrene.
There is a possibility that doctors may still amputate his limb to stop the infection from spreading.
Marius Coertze said Derby-Lewis, 74, was on a second course of antibiotics. Derby-Lewis's blood pressure had stabilised, but was likely to return to life threatening levels if he was transferred from the private hospital, where he is being treated, to prison”.
Marius Coertze again accused prison authorities of deliberately neglecting Derby-Lewis's health problems.
Derby-Lewis is serving a life term for the murder of SA Communist Party general secretary Hani on April 10 1993.

513 people have been displaced when a fire ripped through the Mangologolo informal settlement near Denver.
On Saturday more than 230 shacks were burnt down and 513 people were left homeless.
The city’s disaster management and non-governmental organisations responded immediately by providing blankets.
Three major retail stores were also offering food and promised to provide building materials.
The cause of the fire is still not known.
Spokesperson Percy Morokane said people who wanted to help by donations can call the 24-hour number 011-375-5920.

Gubela Mji aged 52 who is the head of the Stellenbosch University Centre for Rehabilitation Studies in the Health Faculty has survived a knife attack.
Mji was on her regular morning walk near Rosmead Avenu, Kenilworth when she was stabbed six times.
She was found by a security guard who was doing his final rounds when he saw the woman covered in blood, he immediately went to find help.
Her daughter, Vuyo aged 26 said “I was shocked when I went to the door to find that it was the ambulance services outside wanting information about my mother. They just told me that my mother had been assaulted and that she could not remember what had happened.”
She was immediately rushed to Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Pinelands, and it was reported that she is recovering well in hospital.
Mohamed Shaikh, senior director communication and liaison at Stellenbosch University, said the attack highlighted that urgent, decisive action had to be taken against crime that was spiralling out of control.

In a media organisation it has been reported that Zuma will be holding individual meetings with ministers as soon as he returns from Brussels next month.

A final year electrical engineering student Mndeni Hlatswayo aged 25, from the University of Cape Town is believed to have drowned at Logi Bay on Heritage Day.
He was sitting on the rocks with friends at about 2.30pm on Friday watching the rough seas at spring high tide.
He went for a walk among the rocks and did not return. It is believed he was swept off the rocks.
Llandudno surf lifeguards, the NSRI from Hout Bay and Bakoven as well as the police, the Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter and Metro Ambulance and Rescue searched for Hlatswayo on Friday and the search continued on Saturday but there was no sign of him.
Police have opened an inquest docket and have appealed to anyone who saw anything to call the Hout Bay police or the Flying Squad at 10111.

Three people, two men aged 33 and 31 and a woman aged 23 has been arrested for allegedly dealing in cocaine.
Police managed to seize almost 4kg of cocaine which is valued at R4million, as well as other drugs used to cut the cocaine.
Police also managed to seize R186 000 in cash as well as three vehicles from the three alleged drug dealers.
Police have seen this arrest as a major victory in their fight against drug abuse.

Wits University-based political analyst Susan Booysen has stated that the Youth League had suffered a blow but she says it’s far from permanent.
Booysen also added that the country had not seen the last of Julius Malema.
In the NGC the youth league failed in its bid for a generational mix in the ANC’s top structures, and failed in its effort to start getting its former president Fikile Mbalula to replace secretary general Gwede Mantashe in 2012.

Emergency spokesperson Percy Morokane says at least 120 shacks were burnt to the ground.

A body of a missing man found

A man who went missing on Thursday afternoon has been found.
The 40-year-old Molefi Mafethe left his home on Thursday afternoon and did not return, his family reported missing.
Police went a search mission at the subway of Erdeel that divides Thabong and Masimong, the search was unsuccessful.
On Friday morning police got a call that Molefi’s body had been found.
The body was found and had severe injuries, the throat was slit open and the head was crushed.
Fighting sticks were also found on the scene.
No arrests have been made and the motive of the murder is still not known.

Police went a search mission at the subway of Erdeel that divides Thabong and Masimong, the search was unsuccessful.
On Friday morning police got a call that Molefi’s body had been found.
The body was found and had severe injuries, the throat was slit open and the head was crushed.
Fighting sticks were also found on the scene.
No arrests have been made and the motive of the murder is still not known.

A tragic end to the hostage drama

The hostage drama which happened in Kempton Park today has come to a tragic end.
After eight hours of negotiations the police stormed into the house and shot the man after he failed to surrender to the police.
The house was searched and police found the body of the man’s son in the passageway, and it is believed the son died after being shot in the heart.
Neighbours have stated that the man had found that he had brain cancer and had not come to terms with it, and that is what triggered the hostage drama and the shooting.
Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha said the woman is in hospital recovering and has not yet been told about the death of her son and husband.

The Western Cape government department is tackling traffic problems head on. The new national rolling enforcement plan has started being implemented in the province.
This plan on the province is aiming at pulling over 1 million drivers per month.
Traffic officials are stepping up their game, and this is through the three fatal crashes that involved minibus taxis over the last month, which has claimed dozens of lives.
Western Cape Health MEC Theuns Botha said “given the unnecessary burden that has been placed on the healthcare system by reckless drivers, roadblocks will become a visible feature”.

The ANC of the Western Cape has welcomed the Human Rights Commission’s rejection of the City of Cape Town’s appeal, against the finding that the open toilets in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, violate the dignity of residents.
The Human Rights Commission earlier ordered the City of Cape Town to effectively enclose the toilets. The ANC said the toilets which were broken down, should be returned and proper enclosures should be built.
The city found the HRC’s finding beyond its understanding, stating that the HRC’s judgement requires that the city provide an enclosed toilet for every unit in the settlement.
The city has stated that the housing budget it receives from national government for developments such as Makhaza development only provides for one toilet per five households.
The City of Cape Town will ask national government to fund the HRC’s requirement.

The African National Congress Youth League has been campaigning for months for the nationalisation of mines, and they have now been heard by the National General Council.
The ANC said today its national general council has decided the party’s executive committee must do more research on the issue of nationalisation of mines.
The issue of nationalisation of mines was discussed in the NGC in Durban this week.
National Planning Commission Minister Trevor Manuel said “The NGC therefore mandated the NEC to ensure further work be done including research, study tours and discussion on modalities and options to report to the policy conference and for a decision at the centenary national conference in 2012”.

The official celebration will be taking place in Durban, at the Moses Mabhiba stadium. President Jacob Zuma will be delivering the keynote address.

Prisoners escape from court

Eight prisoners escaped from the High Court in Johannesburg this morning, but seven were soon rearrested shortly thereafter. One prisoner is still on the run.
Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza confirmed that the seven suspects had been re-arrested, some in the courthouse and the others in the streets of Johannesburg.
“The awaiting trial prisoners overpowered police at the court’s basement,” she said.
The suspects were to appear in court for murder and robbery.
On september 15, three awaiting trial prisoners escaped from their holding cell with the help of a sergeant in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court .
Kweza said police are investigating the possibility of misconduct, gross negligence and aiding prisoners to escape, against the officers.

One injured in Provincial office fire

A fire broke out in one of the kitchens at the Cape Town provincial offices this morning.
According to one of the workers in the kitchen the fire originated at one of the deep fat fryers when the oil caught fire. A massive cloud of smoke engulfed the room as workers rushed out of the area.
ER24’s Andre Visser says,” Roland Street fire department was already attending to the blaze and treating some of the workers when ER24 paramedics arrived on they scene.“
The majority of staff members only coughed due to the cloud of smoke they had to run through.
One man sustained significant smoke inhalation and was transported to hospital.

One of the four South African flags used during the helicopter fly-over at the inauguration of Nelson Mandela in 1994 will soon be handed to Stellenbosch University for safe-keeping.

Bus company SA Roadlink has settled claims relating to a bus crash that killed 12 people and injured 30 others.
The accident that occurred almost four years ago was settled in the Pietermaritzburg High Court in KwaZulu-Natal.
The company says the terms of the settlements with relatives of the deceased and injured are to be kept confidential.
The driver of the bus in the crash on December 24th 2006, was acquitted of all charges against him after it was said that the rear tyre of the vehicle burst, forcing the bus out of control.
The bus was on its way from Johannesburg to Durban when it crashed into the pillar of a bridge in Pietermaritzburg.

Political analysts say Malema will try to convince the council to adopt a nationalisation policy as well as wipe his disciplinary record clean.
Malema received a public lashing from President Jacob Zuma earlier this week.
Zuma called for the ANC’s various leagues to come into order and realise they are not alliance partners, but merely subordinates.

The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services have called on the public to assist in ensuring a smooth traffic flow at the Africa, Aerospace and Defence Air show 2010 the weekend.
The event hosted by the Air Force Base Ysterplaat opened on Tuesday.
AAD 2010 is an international showcase of civilian and military aviation, maritime and land-based defence and security related technologies.
The Static and Dynamic air show will open to the public on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 September. A crowd of 50 000 per day is expected to attend the show.
The public will also be able to view naval vessels from the Indian, Brazilian as well as the South African navies which will be berthed at the V & A Waterfront.
The public have been asked to purchase their tickets in advance at discounted prices from Cape Town Tourism and NSRI offices as well the SA Air Force Museum at the Air Force Base Ysterplaat.
The City of Cape Town will oversee a traffic management plan for the event.
Parking will be available for the public around the Ysterplaat area.
A ‘stop & drop’ area for public transport is allocated at the William Mason Road gate. To ensure emergency vehicular access, no parking will be allowed within 50m of the main entrance gate in Piet Grobler Street.
An additional parking area and shuttle from Ratanga Junction to the Air Force base is also available on the two days.
Motorists are urged to be patient as there will be congestion along the N1, Koeberg Road and at the Interchange.

"Theft out of vehicle" suspects arrested

A twenty-eight and a thirty-one year old man age were arrested for theft out of motor a vehicle in Saulsbury road in Woodstock, police said on Wednesday.
Sergeant Hilton Malila said,” the arrests followed during scheduled crime prevention patrols when police noticed two male suspects removing a sports bag out of a parked Opel Corsa bakkie in Saulsbury road. “
“When the suspects spotted the police, they fled off on foot, but were arrested shortly thereafter. Police recovered a sports bag containing clothing, a hair dryer and shoes,” Malila said.
An investigation led police to the owner of the vehicle, who identified the recovered items.
The Woodstock police are investigating to see if the 28 and 31 year old men can be linked to similar reported incidents in the area.
The suspects will appear in the Cape Town magistrates’ court tomorrow on a charge of theft out of motor vehicle.

The African National Congress Women’s League today announced measures that will make sure that women are properly represented in political and key public positions.
This includes the draft gender equity bill, which is intended to ensure a 50/50 representation in key positions.
ANC’s Women’s League President Angie Motshekga told delegates attending the ANC’s national general council, "We need something binding, because what we have now is just a framework. It is not law.
We need to move fast from the framework to law, we used to have that committee and it needs to be resuscitated. We have noticed jokes that discriminate against women and sexist tendencies".
The women’s league is considering possible legislation which would force the Independent Electoral Commission to reject political party lists that did not meet the 50/50 representation.
Issues of how women have been treated in the justice system were also discussed by Angie Motshekga.

There has been an outbreak of chickenpox in the Limpopo province. 94 cases of chickenpox have been confirmed in the province.
In Koedoeskop primary school in Waterberg 93 learners and a teacher were diagnosed with chickenpox.
Spokesperson Cecil Motsepe said.”The hardest-hit class was Grade 0 wherein 22 out of 46 children were infected while Grade 7 was the least affected with just one casualty in a class of 21 pupils”.
Chickenpox is highly infectious and spreads easily through coughing and sneezing and the most well known symptom is small red itchy spots which then turn into blisters.
It can take up to three weeks before signs of chickenpox show.
The department has stated that anyone who shows signs should get medical treatment immediately.
Few cases have been reported in KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape.

Police officers have returned to the Hangberg community on Sentinel Hill in Hout Bay today to demolish more illegal structures.
Some of the structures were torn down yesterday, but police were met with violent resistance from the residents of Hout bay.
Today police were not met with as much resistance from residents as they did yesterday.
The main road in front of Hangberg and the road leading into Hout Bay has a strong police presence today.
At the end of yesterday 62 people had been arrested and 15 metro police officers and 3 civilians were injured.

This was compared to government’s original budget of R101 billion.
The head of the ANC Health Committee, Zweli Mkhize, says they have proposed a number of ways to fund the NHI including an income tax and an increase in value-added tax.

Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says President Jacob Zuma has forgotten how he came to power.
Mbalula was speaking at a closed session of the three-day African National Congress National General Council, which is currently underway in Durban.
Mbalula is a close friend to ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, who earlier this week received a political blow from President Zuma.
Zuma said members of the party need to be more disciplined.
Mbalula says the Youth League saved the ANC after mistakes made under the leadership of former president Thabo Mbeki.
Meanwhile, President Zuma is expected to engage with members of the business community at the NGC later today.
An estimated 60 companies are exhibiting at the NGC as part of the ANC’s Progressive Business Forum.
Zuma will tour the exhibition before making a few remarks.

Mbalula is a close friend to ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, who earlier this week received a political blow from President Zuma.
Zuma said members of the party need to be more disciplined.
Mbalula says the Youth League saved the ANC after mistakes made under the leadership of former president Thabo Mbeki.
Meanwhile, President Zuma is expected to engage with members of the business community at the NGC later today.
An estimated 60 companies are exhibiting at the NGC as part of the ANC’s Progressive Business Forum.
Zuma will tour the exhibition before making a few remarks.

The issue will be discussed with the education department today.
The Cosas president Ndoba Msimang says pupils should not be punished for their teacher’s mistake.
Cosas want students to be awarded a 25% course mark due to the three week public servants strike that caused disruptions at schools.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions have condemned the brutal attack by the Provincial Government on the people of Hout Bay.
COSATU’s Tony Ehrenreich says “This is really disastrous when government goes to war with it’s people, when a negotiated solution can be found.”
He said The DA had in the past promised the mainly rich white community of Hout Bay that they would continue to act in their interest.
“This is an attempt to get the largely poor coloured community out of Hout Bay which is nothing new and is similar to the attack on the IMIZAMO YETHU settlement.

Missing Orange Farm cousins found

Thando and Mbali Dube of Orange Farm, Gauteng who went missing on September 6 have been found alive.
Captain Johannes Motsiri said,” A good Samaritan found the 11 year old girls roaming the streets near Golden highway and safeguarded them.
He says the Samaritan didn’t have any information on the girls and asked them where they stayed and returned them to the police station today.
The girls have been taken to a clinic for examination and spoke to a social worker.
It is believed that the cousins were trying to run away because they were unhappy at home.
“They were staying with their aunt and grandmother and left home to go to their parents,” Motsir said.

The Nyanga police are appealing the assistance of the public to assist with any information regarding a double murder case.
Captain Ntomboxolo Sithitshi said “police attended to a murder scene on August 20, where a man and a woman were killed in Umkhonto, Nyanga, while visiting the chairman of the local housing development committee.”

The situation in Hout Bay is still very tense and police officials are still trying to get the situation under control.
Two children have been hurt during today’s clashes.
A 5-year-old boy was hit by a bullet coming through a window while he was having breakfast this morning.

Violence in Hout Bay erupted early this morning because of City of Cape Town's land invasion unit who were about to demolish shacks built in the Hangberg area.
The situation at the informal settlement in Hout Bay is being described as tense at the moment. At least six Cape Town Metro police members have been wounded.
Hundreds of police members and city officials descended on the settlement to remove what police say are 17 illegal, unoccupied shacks on the Sentinel above the harbour.
Residents have blocked the roads with burning tyres and set structures alight, two schools in the area had to be closed.
Police officials have responded to the violence with rubber bullets. Kylie Hatton of the City of Cape Town said “At the moment the South African Police Services are at the scene, removing the structures and providing assistance when necessary”.
Warrant Officer Tanya Lesch from the Hout Bay Police station stated that more than 300 law enforcement agents were deployed for this operation.
She confirmed that arrests were made and people were brought in for questioning. Several protesters and police officers were injured but there were no details on the severity of the injuries.

Lights On campaign kicks off today

The Automobile Association (AA) is urging all motorists to switch on their headlights in support of road safety.
The “Lights On” campaign kicked off today and the campaign is aimed at reducing the number of crashes on South African roads by 50-percent.
The AA has asked motorists to switch their lights on while driving in order to help pedestrians to make better judgement when navigating traffic.
The AA’s Gary Ronald said “a campaign like this was essential for vulnerable road users”.

The South African Editors’ Forum (Sanef) has stated that the proposed changes to the Protection of Information Bill, which was announced by Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele falls far short of rendering the bill compliant with the constitution.
Sanef had a meeting in Durban where it welcomed the indication by the minister of a willingness to look over the definition of ‘national interest’.
Sanef has suggested that the drafters of the bill engage with the forum and other stakeholders.
By the drafters meeting with sanef and stakeholders, issues of the bill being a threat to the free flow of information and also the right for citizens to be informed could be addressed.
Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele presented to Parliament a tweaked version of the bill on Friday.
The minister has admitted that government was concerned about the negative publicity on the country’s image because of the proposed secrecy laws that have continued to draw fire from civil society and the media.

Motor industry workers return to work

The South African Petroleum Retailers Association said all automotive industry employees should be back on the job on Monday.
This came after 14-day strike by motor industry workers including vehicle component manufacturers and petrol attendants who demanded a 15 percent wage increase and a change in working conditions.
A settlement was reached and employees will get a 10 percent increase in the first year, followed by a nine percent increase over the following two years.
Sapra’s Peter Noke said they believe that they’ve have formed a tripartite agreement between ourselves and the Department of Energy whereby we would take other social issues, discuss it, and when we reach a consensus we will discuss it further with the Minister of Energy.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to meet with Cosas today to discuss their exam demands.

Addressing a fundraising dinner in Durban last night, on the eve of the ANC’s third national general council, Zuma said parties such as the ANC promote the stability and secure environment in which business thrives.
He says it is therefore good value for money to invest in the ruling party, which is supported by more than 65-percent of the population.
Meanwhile, all eyes are expected to be on Durban for the next three days for what is seen as a crucial mid-term review for Zuma.

Laingsburg deaths now at 23

The death toll in the Laingsburg accident has now risen to 23. Another male victim involved in yesterday’s taxi and truck collision has passed away in the Tygerberg Hospital, early this morning.
The 30 year old truck driver was released from hospital and taken back to Johannesburg yesterday afternoon.
The other four survivors, three females, age 6, 13 and14 and one male, age 6 are still in a serious condition in Worcester and Laingsburg hospitals.
The post mortem is currently underway in Oudtshoorn, and the names of the deceased has been released.
All the occupants were Malawi nationals.

The Minister of Home Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has made an appeal to Zimbabwean nationals resident in South Africa to take up the government offer for their documentation and amnesty.
The offer will start on Monday 20 September and ends on 31 December 2010.
Minister Dlamini Zuma said, “The South African government appeals to Zimbabwean nationals resident in South Africa to take up the offer to regularise their stay in South Africa beginning tomorrow Monday 20 September.”
“This process is aimed at ensuring you comply with South Africa’s immigration laws, lead normal lives while ending your misery of living under constant fear of deportation.
Simultaneously, we reiterate our commitment to extending amnesty to all those who possess fraudulent South African identity documents on condition they hand them back to Home Affairs regional offices in the country,” said Minister Dlamini Zuma.
“To facilitate this process, 240 Home Affairs officials have been deployed to 46 regional offices across the country to assist you in the process of regularising your stay in South Africa through documentation.
We stand ready to increase this number of officials depending on the number of Zimbabweans applying for documents.”
She said, “Accordingly, and as part of this process, we call upon Zimbabwean nationals to approach their Embassy in Pretoria and consulate in Johannesburg to declare their presence and acquire valid travel documents to enable the South African government to issue them with study, work or business permits.”

Over 30 killed in 24 hours on SA’s roads

On Saturday road accidents in South Africa claimed more than 30 lives.
Twenty two people were left dead in an early morning collision between a taxi and a bakkie near Laingsburg on the N1. Among the deceased were three children.
It is believed that the taxi was travelling from Rondebosch in Cape Town to Malawi and Zimbabwe.
Another five people died when a man was racing on the highway after he hijacked a taxi and hit oncoming traffic on the N2 in Durban.
A further 10 people were also killed in accidents in and around Gauteng.

Three prisoners who escaped from the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday have been rearrested, police said.
The three were part of nine prisoners awaiting trial.
Western Cape police’s Billy Jones says 21-year-old Zolani Hermanus who was arrested for rape was rearrested in Cradock yesterday morning. Twenty-eight-year-old Thembele Mqoba and 21-year-old Lubabalo Mabhuti, charged respectively with rape and murder, were rearrested in Delft and Khayelitsha on Friday.
A 45 year old sergeant allegedly helped the men escape from the holding cells on Wednesday.
The sergeant has been arrested and will appear in court on Monday.
Police are still searching for the other escaped prisoners.

SA’s homeless soccer team off to Brazil

The South African street soccer team is heading to Brazil for the Homeless World Cup after receiving last minute sponsorship.
Despite bringing home the Milan City Cup last year, funds were still not available on Friday for this year’s tournament.
With the help of Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille who canvassed for funds, Cell C came on board with a sponsorship for the team.
The team consists of eight players from four different youth development organisations.

Democratic Alliance and Independent Democrats leaders, Helen Zille and Patricia de Lille, lead a protest march against the proposed Protection of Information Bill and Media Tribunal on Constitution Hill, in Johannesburg today.
Both leaders warned that the government is trying to put an end to free media.
Zille said the proposed bill and media tribunal signals a return to apartheid-era censorship and secrecy.
They are designed to protect the ruling party from public scrutiny and are a clear and present danger to out constitution.
They present a clear and present danger to our constitutional order and refuse to accept that our constitutional democracy will one day be seen as a brief interlude between two authoritarian regimes.
Both refused to see the ANC taking us back to time where government tried to control everything we saw, heard and read.

They present a clear and present danger to our constitutional order and refuse to accept that our constitutional democracy will one day be seen as a brief interlude between two authoritarian regimes.
Both refused to see the ANC taking us back to time where government tried to control everything we saw, heard and read.
Three found murdered in Khayelitsha

The bodies of three unidentified males were discovered in Khayelitsha this morning, police said.
Constable Suzan Jantjies said the three men was allegedly attacked and murdered by a group of about 10 people.
“The bodies of two of the men, age 23 and 26 were found next to the Khayelitsha railway line in the RR Block and the third body of a 25 year old man was found at D27A in Khayelitsha.
The men were found with several open and stab wounds to their bodies,” she said.
The motive for the murder is unknown. No arrests have been made yet. A murder docket has been opened.

Five people have died in an accident on the N2 in Durban.
ER24’s Chris Botha 911 said a man was racing on the highway after he hijacked a taxi.

A suspected armed robber was killed in a shoot-out with police in Strand in the Western Cape yesterday.
The man was robbing a woman in her car.
A taxi driver who witnessed the robbery alerted police, who found the suspect running next to the N2 highway.
“The man was shot in the head after several shots were fired. It is unclear whether the man shot himself or was killed by the police,” said Warrant Officer November Filander.

The Johannesburg Metro Police has opened a case against social networking site Twitter member PigSpotter for tipping off motorists about roadblocks and speed traps on the site.

It is alleged; the taxi driver overtook a vehicle and collided with the truck.

Rapid increase in veldfires

South Africa have reportedly seen about forty-seven veld fires in this week.
Increases in temperatures and dry conditions have contributed to the fires, according to Working on Fire (Wof).
Wof spokesperson Michelle Kleinhans, are appealing to the general public not to make fires because they are dangerous.
Kwa-Zulu Natal reportedly had the most fires followed by Midlands, Vryheid, Eshowe and the Drakensberg regions with a total of 17.
Fires have been seen in the Free State, the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga.
Fire-fighters are still trying to extinguish some wildfires.
No injuries have been reported.

Rondebosch High School in the spotlight

A children's rights activist has come to the defence of a Cape Town school.
The school has currently been in the spotlight for insisting a learner trim his growing moustache.
Rondebosch High School has ordered 14-year-old Mashilo Jones to obey the school rule that pupils be clean shaven, and says he could face expulsion if he does not comply.
However his mother told a local newspaper that she will not allow him to shave until he is older, as his hair would only grow back thicker and quicker.
Activist Pene Kimber, who is one of the founders of a website set up to fight abuse and bullying in schools, said she believed it was wrong of the teenager’s mother to go to the media about the issue.

A 23-year-old police officer has been arrested today for renting out police gears.The police constable is a member of the railway police in Johannesburg.
The officer was renting out guns, bullet-proof vests, radios, blue lights and sirens.
The 23-year-old police was caught after a robbery that took place on Wednesday, when a gang of armed men dressed in police uniform, robbed a business of cell phone and jewellery.
The police arrested the constable, two of the four robbers, an employee of the business that was robbed and a security guard who worked at a car dealership in Pretoria from where the getaway car was stolen.

Members of the African Christian Democratic Party have protested outside the Benoni Magistrate’s Court against the granting bail to a man accused of murdering his wife.
Boy Hlatshwayo allegedly shot his wife four times in May this year and has been released on four-thousand-Rand bail.
The case has been postponed 14 October 2010, and might be moved to the South Gauteng High Court.
Meanwhile, the ACDP says former president Thabo Mbeki’s bodyguards and members of the police should be charged with negligence.
This follows an incident last night where a man ran on to the stage at the University of Pretoria while Mbeki was delivering a lecture.
The man is said to have entered the lecture theatre, calling for Mbeki to step down from the stage.
He then ran up and threw an object at Mbeki’s feet before being detained by security members.

The South African Revenue Service has started auctioning off assets that belong to convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti.
At 11:00 today a sheriff in the North West town of Brits started the auction.
The South African Revenue Service through the auction is trying to recover outstanding payments of R77 million.
The judgments were obtained in the North Gauteng High Court in July against Glenn Agliotti by the SA Revenue Service.
Several items were seized from Agliotti's home at Pecanwood Golf Estate, Hartbeespoort.
The convicted drug dealer is currently on trial for his involvement in the 2005 shooting of Brett Kebble, along with plots to murder other business people.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says financial difficulties currentl experienced by the Retail Motor Industry are what encouraged them to accept a revised wage offer.
Numsa members brought an end to a two-week strike that crippled several sectors of the motor industry.
Labour accepted a 10-percent wage increase despite initially demanding for 15-percent.
Petrol attendants have also had an increase to their wages.
It is alleged that not all union members agreed to the offer but did so because it wasn't going to get any better.

A boy dies after being hit by a cricket ball

Matthew Prior a 13-year-old boy has died after being hit in the chest by a cricket ball.
Matthew Prior was playing in an Uplands Preparatory School first team cricket match
when the incident happened.
He was hit by the ball in the chest and he collapsed on the field.
Doctors have stated that the ball broke one of his ribs, which in turn punctured one of the boy’s lungs.
Matthew was rushed to hospital and he died on arrival at a provincial hospital.

Western Cape Traffic officers close down on school buses

The Western Cape Provincial Traffic has increased law enforcement operation.
This is an attempt to prevent a repeat of the tragic accident in Blackheath which left ten young learners dead while they were being transported to school.
This week traffic officers have pulled over a total of 135 school buses including minibus taxis, which are used to transporting students to and from school.
These operations were carried out across the Western Cape. The operations resulted in seven buses being taken off the road for being unroadworthy. A further seven buses were in the hands of unlicensed drivers.
The traffic department has said just like they took a stand against drunk drivers through their Safely Home campaign, they will also stand against non-compliant operators and drivers who are tasked with transporting learners to and from school.

The strike in the automotive component sector and the retail motor industry is over.
The National Union of Metalworkers says a three-year wage agreement will see workers in the component manufacturing industry receiving a pay hike of 9% -percent in the first year, followed by two 8% increases.
Filling station attendants have secured a three-year deal as well, of 10%, and 9% in each of the following two years.
The crippling strike closed down production at all South Africa’s major vehicle companies.

Western Cape police are appealing for information following the murder of a 22-year-old Stellenbosch University student in Kayamandi Township early this morning.
Police spokesperson Billy Jones says three attackers approached the young man and his female friend while they were walking in the township.
A struggle followed and the student was stabbed in the neck. The suspects fled on foot.
The female friend was left unharmed.
Meanwhile, Cape Town police sergeant has been arrested in connection with the escape of nine murder and rape accused from the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.
The 45-year-old sergeant is facing charges of corruption, defeating the ends of justice and aiding prisoners in their escape yesterday afternoon.
Search teams from various police units worked throughout the night to re-arrest the escapers, with no success at this stage.

Cabinet has warned student bodies not to disrupt schools and examinations.
Government spokesperson Themba Maseko said at a media briefing following Cabinet's regular meeting, that the student bodies should discuss their concerns with the education authorities.
He also urged all matriculants to use the opportunity to write their introductory exams, despite the disruption many of them suffered during the public service strike.
Maseko says there are no plans to cancel or postpone the matric preliminary examinations following the protracted public service strike.
Cabinet has also called on parents, teachers, unions and community organisations to work together to ensure a focus on learning and teaching.

Police charged Netcare CEO Friedland and ten other people with more than a hundred counts of fraud, counts of serious assault and counts of contravening the Human Tissues Act and Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
Netcare has since denied any wrong doing with kidney transplants at Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital.
Netcare CEO Friedland has since said in the group’s website that they have been fully co-operating with the police on the matter for years. He also added that they are surprised and disappointed that the police have now brought charges against Netcare and him personally.
The case relates to more than a 100 operations in which mainly Brazilians were allegedly paid as R42,000 to donate their kidneys to Israeli patients.

Last week Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa released the latest crime statistics which showed the hard work police are doing to combat crime.
The Cabinet has regular Wednesday meeting and today government spokesperson Themba Maseko briefed the media and said the “stats were a tangible indication of the government's commitment to create a safe society. Government will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our citizens”.
He also stated that the collaboration between the police and the various partners should be strengthened to achieve the target of reducing crime by seven percent a year.
Maseko then added that government acknowledged and welcomed the role played by communities, civil society, and businesses in the fight against crime.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions has stated that there is an urgent need to redistribute resources from private schools and other institutions to public schools in working class communities.
This week Cosatu launched an economic growth path document.
The document outlined Cosatu’s plans to deal with problems relating to housing, crime and corruption.
Aubrey Matshiqi from the Centre for Policy Studies said “The policy debates that will be kicked off at the NGC meeting will also be used a proxy for leadership struggles ahead of the 2012 elective conference”.

The Department of Trade and Industry launched its anti-piracy campaign in East Rand, Gauteng yesterday.
The launch includes a two-day intellectual property workshop, which will see delegates from the creative arts industry engaging with the department.
These discussions are a plan to try and get proposals to combat the problem of piracy.
Trade and Industry Deputy Minister, Thandi Tobias-Pokolo, says government hopes to get a positive outcome from this interactive session, where resolutions, rather than complaints, will be discussed.

ANC questions Zille on alleged radio contradictions

The African National Congress has accused Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille of contradicting herself on the province's three year deal for a call-in show with a local radio station.
The ANC member, Max Ozinsky, asked in the provincial legislature yesterday whether Zille's explanation on payments to a local radio station and other radio stations were "believable".
He questioned Zille's statement to the legislature last week that there had been an open tender process from the start.
He said it contradicted statements Zille made in a local newspaper interview.

Parliament’s portfolio committee on defence has decided to stop their fight against Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.
The committee was pressuring Sisulu to submit reports on service conditions within the South African Defence Force before going ahead with work on the Defence Amendment Bill.

Pretoria taxi drivers today embarked on a one day strike that left many commuters stranded, and non-striking taxi drivers were also intimidated.
Drivers from 40 different taxi associations are opposing the implementation of the traffic management and demerit system, Aarto.
The taxi drivers have stated that they fear that the implementation of the system may have a negative impact on the industry.
The Tshwane Regional Taxi Council said “since the pilot phase of the system was launched, Metro police have been increasingly harassing taxi drivers on the road”.
The demerit system, drivers around the country could see points docked from their licences for breaking the rules of the road. Once all the points have been removed, the licence is suspended.
The council has given government 14 days to respond to its grievances.
Meanwhile in Johannesburg about 150 taxis marched to the South African Taxi Finance offices to hand over a memorandum of demands. The main issue highlighted in the memorandum is the repossession of taxis and the very expensive rates by SA Taxi Finance.

Drowned Eldorado Park boys bodies found

The bodies of three boys who drowned in an Eldorado Park river on Tuesday have been found.
Johannesburg emergency services spokeswoman Nana Radebe said, “Two of the boys were found on Wednesday morning, after the third was recovered on Tuesday.
Four boys aged between 10 and 12 were playing in the river in Extension One when three of them were swept away.
By the time the fourth boy returned after getting help from residents, his mates had already disappeared into the stream, which led to a search by emergency personnel.
Radebe said children are advised not to play in streams and to go designated recreational places instead to avoid such incidents.
Parents have been requested keep a watchful eye on their children’s whereabouts.

3 vehicle collision leaves 20 injured

The N2 came to a stand still this morning after a motor vehicle collision involving two minibus taxis leaving 20 people injured occurred just past the Vanguard turn off, direction Cape Town.
ER24’s Andre Visser said, “It was chaotic when paramedics arrived on the scene as there were approximately 20 people lying on the road.”
“One of the taxis was allegedly burning and passengers had to flee the vehicle in a hurry. Local fire and rescue services were already at the scene attending to the blaze.
Passengers in the small passenger vehicle had to be extracted from the vehicle and paramedics worked quickly and carefully to remove the passengers from the wreckage, “he said.
Visser said most of the people injured in the incident had minor injuries although there were a number of patients who had more serious injuries ranging from deep lacerations and fractured limbs.
The N2 freeway was closed to traffic and motorists was diverted to use the Vanguard Drive off ramp.

Matric preliminary examinations will not be cancelled

The Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy has stated that cancelling the matric preliminary examinations is not an option.
There has been a huge confusion in the matric timetable in many of the schools across the country.
Student body The Congress of South African Students (COSAS), this week interrupted classes in Soweto and on the West Rand.
Cosas claims that they interrupted classes because learners are not ready to write the exams, due to the disruption of the prolonged public servants’ strike.

An unknown armed man entered a house in Torgue Street Leiden, Delft at about 24h40 last night.
The man entered the house and opened fire at the people inside the house.
One person was shot while sitting in the lounge and two others were shot while lying in separate rooms, the three people passed away on the scene.
A 24-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son also sustained bullet wounds. The woman sustained a bullet wound in the back and the child sustained a bullet wound on his left arm, they are both in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Three other men aged 20, 22 and 28-years-old were also fatally wounded during the shooting incident.
Police have opened a murder case-docket and are requesting the help of the public, who have any information to contact their local police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

The Parliamentary legal department has come under fire for referring to 800-metre champion Caster Semenya as a man.
A poor quality document for the Sport Portfolio Committee revealed several grammatical mistakes.
Amongst those mistake was a reference to the gender testing of “Mr C Semenye.”
Committee members announced last week that they intended to summon South African Sports Confederation Olympic Committee President, Gideon Sam, to brief members on the handling of Semenya’s gender scandal and the mismanagement of Athletics South Africa.

Sentech to switch off community radio and tv stations signal

Signal distributor Sentech has informed community radio and television stations to make outstanding licence payments by the end of Tuesday.
Failure to do so will result in their signals being blocked.
Community radio and tv stations including some government departments owe Sentech R27 million in transmission costs.
“Sentech has sent correspondence to and fro to customers," Sentech’s Nthabeleng Mokitimi said.
"We’ve sent letters, reminders, informal and formal engagements to our customers so the last option that we’ve taken is to switch off the customers,” she said.

On Tuesday, four men robbed a jewellery store in Alberton in which one robber was killed, one arrested and the other two fled the scene after a shoot out with police.
A policeman was shot in the leg and airlifted to hospital.
Police officials gave chase after the men after they robbed the jewellery store which led to a shooting outside Jeppestown men’s hostel where their car crashed.

This afternoon a serious motor vehicle collision occurred at the corners of Montague and Racecourse Avenue in Montague Gardens.
At this stage it is still unclear as to how the accident occurred, but allegedly a truck had jackknifed at the intersection colliding with ten cars.
The vehicles involved in the collision tallied to an amazing ten motor cars and two trucks.
One of the trucks was an oil carrier and had massive damage to the cab.
“With the help of fire and rescue services the man was successfully extricated out of the truck before being treated at the scene.” ER24’s Andre Visser said.

SAPS says police who worked during the World Cup have been paid

The South African Police Service says every police member who worked during the World Cup has now been paid.
Police spokesperson Sally de Beer says the processing of overtime applications for the 44-thousand police members who worked during the month-long tournament proved to be a logistical nightmare.
She says about 650-million-Rand has now been paid out. De Beer says they are relieved that all police members have now been paid their dues.
Meanwhile, this morning members attached to the DPCI’s Organised Crime Unit (Hawks), arrested two police members stationed at Woodstock at their respective residences on charges of corruption.
A 28 year old constable was arrested at his Mitchell’s Plain residence, and shortly afterwards a 44 year old sergeant was arrested at his home in Northpine, Kraaifontein,Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said.
The members are suspected of couriering drugs for drug traffickers in return for cash in the Woodstock area.
The two suspects are in police custody, and are due to make a court appearance tomorrow in Cape Town.
