The African National Congress says the National Health Insurance scheme will cost the country R376 billion over the next 15 years.
This was compared to government’s original budget of R101 billion.
The head of the ANC Health Committee, Zweli Mkhize, says they have proposed a number of ways to fund the NHI including an income tax and an increase in value-added tax.
Mkhize says the NHI will increase government spending in the health sector from 12% of the national budget to 14.5%.
