The Home Affairs department is being sued for R6.8 billion.
Victims of identity fraud and foreigners wrongfully detained are demanding about R414 million in damages.
The department is also facing lawsuits from people who have been declared dead and others who did not receive identity documents.
Earlier today Home Affairs director-general Mkuseni Apleni said the department will have to everything in its power to intensify the fight against fraud and corruption.
