The City says confusion has arisen around the renaming of Green Point Stadium to Cape Town Stadium and is reminding the public that it is now Cape Town Stadium after its approval by Council last year.
City spokesperson Pieter Cronje says the Green Point Stadium was always just a ‘working title’ given to the new stadium to be used until an official name had been chosen.
“Green Point Stadium is not an official name and merely refers to the location of the stadium on the Green Point Common. The old Green Point Stadium, which has largely been demolished, was known by this name over many decades because of its location,” said Cronje.
Last year June the City undertook a naming process for its new stadium. Cronje says residents were given 30 days to send the City their suggestions, after which a panel consisting of both City staff and external experts, judged the entries.
“A total of 302 name proposals were received. The majority of the panel voted for the name Cape Town Stadium, which the City proposed. The name was officially approved at a full Council meeting in October,” said Cronje.

Demerit road safety system postponed

The Road Traffic Management Corporation together with the Department of Transport has decided to postpone the implementation of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act.
The act was originally set for the metropolitan authorities of Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay and the City of Cape Town on 1 July 2010 and on 1 November 2010 countrywide.
RTMC CEO Collins Letsoalo says the decision to postpone the roll-out, particularly to the metropolitan authorities, is motivated by the need to ensure effective implementation.
“This postponement should not be read as a deviation towards the commitment by the Minister, the Department of Transport and the RTMC towards the achievements of the goals to promote road safety.
“When AARTO was implemented in Tshwane and Johannesburg, some issues that were identified during the pilot for further attention included the need for the strengthening of the communication and education of the general public in order to ensure that all road users and people affected by the system had a full and clear understanding of their rights, duties and obligations and in terms of the AARTO process,” said Letsoalo.
He added that the RTMC reiterates that the decision to postpone was taken without any pressure from anyone.
We reiterate that the AARTO Act is a 12-year-old legislation that is meant to assist in pushing back this attack on the South African population.

Black Stars strengthens their WC campaign

The Ghana soccer team has intensified their world cup campaign with the return of Isaac Vorsah to training ahead of their World Cup quarterfinal against Uruguay at Soccer City on Friday.
Vorsah injured his knee in the team’s opening win against Serbia.
The Black Stars as their fondly known, receded injury concerns with the news that leading striker Asamoah Gyan, midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng and skipper John Mensah would all be fit for the clash.
Coach Milovan Rajevac will, however, be without suspended teenage defender Jonathan Mensah.
Meanwhile, the City of Tshwane is keeping soccer fever alive in the city by putting in place various daily promotions and activities for entertainment at fan parks.
This includes a line up of the country's music celebrities, choirs and live bands, as well as on-stage competitions.
The says despite Bafana Bafana's early exit, fans are still celebrating football and good entertainment is helping maintain the World Cup momentum.

The National Prosecuting Authority says the charges against England soccer fan Pavlos Joseph were withdrawn after he paid a 750-Rands admission of guilt fine.
Joseph admitted that the had contravened Fifa regulations by entering the restricted area of the England team’s changing room at the Cape Town Stadium earlier this month without the required accreditation.
The case against the man accused of orchestrating the security breach, Daily Mirror reporter Simon Wright, has been postponed to the 7th of next month. Wright’s bail of three-thousand-Rands was extended.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga says he had made representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Western Cape after which he paid an admission of guilt fine of R750.
The implication of this is that he now has a criminal record which will be registered in South African police register.

Five workers were injured last night in an explosion at a foundry in Atlantis.
Netcare 911 paramedics spokesperson Lauren Copley said the night shift workers were treated for mild to moderate burns.
The accident happened when hot metal was apparently poured into a smelter containing some cold water residue.
Copley said the men were stabilised and taken to the Blaauwberg hospital.
Another worker was treated on the scene for minor burns.
In the Eastern Cape paramedics also say seven firemen are being treated for injuries they sustained while extinguishing a blaze at a Port Elizabeth sub-station.
The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality told the media the fire was caused by faulty switchgear at the sub-station which supplies the Walmer Park shopping centre.
The firemen sustained burns to their faces and hands when oil ignited.

The National Prosecuting Authority announced this morning that it dropped the case against England soccer fan Pavlos Joseph.
Palvos illegally entered the England team’s changing room at the Cape Town Stadium after the match against Algeria earlier this month.
However accused reporter from the Daily Mirror is back in court today for allegedly orchestrating the security breach and harbouring Joseph while police were searching for him.
The reporter Simon Wright was released after appearing in a special World Cup Court in Cape Town on Monday R3000.
Meanwhile police says effective policing and law enforcement do not solely lie with them.

Gama fired from Transnet

State rail company, Transnet, has dismissed its freight rail executive, Siyabonga Gama.
He was found guilty of signing contracts outside his mandate in an 18-million-Rand deal involving Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda.
Gama had applied to have the decision of his disciplinary hearing overturned by the South Gauteng High Court.
Transnet spokesman John Dludlu is quoted as saying the conclusion of this delayed matter paves the way for the company, to make permanent appointments in place of the acting positions that were required by the suspension and disciplinary action of Gama.
Prior to his suspension, Gama was believed to be one of the favourites for the group chief executive post that became vacant when Maria Ramos left Transnet 16 months ago.
This firing marks the end of a nine-month disciplinary process.

Mayor to disccuss cemetery probe findings

Executive Mayor Dan Plato will discuss the findings of a probe into irregularities on portions of land in the Gordon’s Bay Cemetery.
Several months ago an independent body conducted an investigation into the development and landscaping works at the Cemetery.
The findings of the probe were submitted to the planning and Environment Portfolio Committee at the beginning of the month.
At the meeting, Mayor Dan Plato is expected present the findings of the probe.

Mosimane to take post as Bafana coach

SAFA has offered the position of Bafana coach to assistant Pitso Mosimane.
Supersport United coach Gavin Hunt was also in the running to fill the coveted position.
Mosimane has served as assistant coach to the national squad for four seasons while Hunt secured three league titles with the club.
The appointment will be made official tomorrow.
Mosimane’s debut task will be to prepare the team for the Afcon qualifiers shich kick off in September.

Fifa still looking into use of technology during matches

Speaking at a media conference earlier today, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, said the organisation had clearly publicized that goal line technology would not be used during the 2010 World Cup tournament.
The statement comes after widespread debate about the use of technology in soccer matches after a goal by English player Frank Lampard was disallowed in Sunday’s clash against Germany.
Blatter however added that the world governing body was still looking at ways to improve the standard of refereeing in high level matches.
He also praised the standard of decision making in the world cup thus far but said FIFA can’t make statements about refereeing decisions after every match.

25 year old arrested for murder in Khayelitsha

A 25 year old man has been arrested for murder after a shop owner was shot and killed in Thembani Centre, Khayelitsha.
Police spokesperson Captain Anneke van der Vyver says three unknown men entered a shop where a struggle ensued between the suspects and the two owners of the business after the suspects attempted to grab the cash registers.
She says shots were fired resulting in one of the owners being fatally wounded and the other hospitalized.
“The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. A white Hyundai sedan was later found abandoned on the corners of Mew Way and Lansdowne Road and the possibility that it was used as the getaway-vehicle, is being investigated.
“Police immediately commenced with their investigation and managed to arrest a 25 year old Khayelitsha resident shortly afterwards,” said van der Vyver.
Van der Vyver added that the suspect currently remains in police custody and will soon appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

Unions lambaste provincial authority over alleged corruption

The North West Provincial administration has come once again under fire from unions in the province, accusing the executive for failing to root out corruption.
Unions in the province claim Premier Maureen Modiselle has failed to act against rampant corruption in the province despite her promise to root out corruption in her government.
The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union allege that there are corrupt activities in the provincial education department involving senior officials.
“Recently in the some serious corrupt activities by senior officials were discovered which prompted the suspension of the then Head of department but we were astonished by the barefaced selective disciplinary action that was taken by the executive,” the union says in a statement.
The union says it noted reports that members of the provincial executive are planning to employ a communications director to the post of superintendent general of the department violating public service employment regulations.
Early in the month Cosatu in the province called on government to charge all of its suspended officials by the end of June or face mass action.
The union federation further called on Modiselle to act against corrupt officials and MECs in her province.
The said at the time they intended to use the presidential hotline to ask for a full investigation into alleged corruption in the education and other departments.

Nyanga police held a three day weekend operation which resulted in 96 suspects being arrested.
The operation started last Thursday and ended on Sunday with various charges registered, including murder, rape, illegal dealings of liquor and drunk driving amongst others.
Parcels of dagga, dagga cigarettes as well as liquor were also confiscated during these operations.
The suspects are expected to appear in various courts including Wynberg, Athlone and Fezeka Magistrate Courts during the week.

52 year old arrested for manufacturing drugs in Somerset West

A 52 year old woman has been arrested for being in possession of drugs in Somerset West.
Police spokesperson Constable Suzan Jantjies says police received information of a drug cultivation facility at a house in the area.
“During the search police discovered a sealed room with various dagga plants and manufacturing equipment.
“Police seized a number of computers, air conditioners, lights and dagga plants. The value of the seized equipment is unknown,” said Jantjies.
Jantjies says the woman is being detained at the Somerset West police station and she will appear in court soon.

The South African Municipal Workers Union has completed its last round of wage negotiations with water sector employer, South African Association of Water Utilities.
Spokesperson Tahir Sema says the employer has not budged in its wage negotiations and is intentionally driving the sector towards a dispute.
He adds that this jeopardizes the nation’s water supply during the World Cup soccer tournament.
The parties represented largely by SAMWU and the smaller unions UASA and NEHAWU are engaged in centralised bargaining for the sector, together with the employers’ organisation SAAWU.
The parties met on Friday for the fourth round of negotiations.

According to the Mitchell’s Plain Policing Forum, the life of a man accused of killing his ex-wife and a Muslm cleric can be in jeopardy, should he released on bail.
The CPF told the area’s court yesterday that it cannot guarantee the safety of a double murder accused.
Igshaan Isaacs allegedly shot dead the duo in Beacon Valley last week.
Fazlin Isaacs and Sharief Hendricks were both gunned down.
The 46-year-old Isaacs was released from police custody less than two weeks prior to the incident by the local court after being charged with domestic violence.
The Community Policing Forum’s Michael Jacobs says a petition in which the residents are calling for bail to be denied has been handed to the court.

Netherlands went through quater-finals of the World Cup following their 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
Ill discipline by the Slovakians gave the Dutch side their second goal in a very windy Moses Mabhiba Stadium in Durban this afternoon.
While two defenders were confronting the referee, Wesley Sneijder went ahead and calmly scored the Dutch’ second goal in the 84th minute.
Striker Arjen Robben scored the Netherlands’ first goal in the first half.
Slovakia midfielder Robert Vittek contributed a consolation goal in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late.
With a victory, their 23rd unbeaten performance in a row, the Orange now wait to see who go through to the quarters in the clash between Brazil and Chile at Ellis Park this evening.

Department raises concern over planned charges against Minister

The Water Affairs department has raised concern with the planned criminal charges to be laid against Minister Buyelwa Sonjica by the Environment and Conservation Association.
The association accuses Sonjica of not attending to the pollution contaminating the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West.
The department described the plans as “unfortunate” in light of the work it is doing to remedy the situation in the entire country.
The department’s Nobu Ngele says historical challenges such as the state of water infrastructure, inadequate funding and the skills shortage are compounding the problem.
Chairperson of the association Nicole Barlow, says the organisation's legal representatives were finalising a comprehensive draft of criminal charges to be laid at the Rustenburg police station.

The Water Affairs department has raised concern with the planned criminal charges to be laid against Minister Buyelwa Sonjica by the Environment and Conservation Association.
The association accuses Sonjica of not attending to the pollution contaminating the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West.
The department described the plans as “unfortunate” in light of the work it is doing to remedy the situation in the entire country.
The department’s Nobu Ngele says historical challenges such as the state of water infrastructure, inadequate funding and the skills shortage are compounding the problem.
Chairperson of the association Nicole Barlow, says the organisation's legal representatives were finalising a comprehensive draft of criminal charges to be laid at the Rustenburg police station.

Three hospitalized after taxi overturned

Three people are being treated in hospital after the taxi they were traveling in overturned on the R27 near Ysterfontein this morning.
It is alleged that one of the taxi's tyres burst and caused it to turn onto its right side and start sliding.
ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadely says a 26 year old female was airlifted from the scene by the ER24 Discovery Medicopter and flown to Tygerberg hospital for the further treatment of her serious injuries.
"Another two patients were transported by a road ambulance to a nearby hospital,” he said.
It is believed that there were ten occupants in the taxi when the incident occurred.

Two separate collisions around the city left 23 people injured this morning.
In the first incident, a mini bus slammed into the back of a bus on Walter Sisulu Drive in Khayelitsha, seriously injuring the driver and six occupants.
No one travelling in the bus was injured.
Meanwhile, 16 people were treated for minor injuries after car and bakkie collided at the intersection of Coen Steytler and Buitengracht Road in the CBD.
“Some of the injured are believed to have been workers who were seated at the back of the bakkie and were ejected during the collision,” said ER24’s Tristan Wadeley.

Police are requesting the assistance of the public in identifying the body of a man hit by a train in Brackenfell near the Okavango bridge.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said the man appears to be in his early thirties.
“He was dressed in a blue and white long-sleeved striped shirt, hooded blue jacket (white label on left front chest – no signage), blue jeans, white socks and white takkies,” said Captain Frederick van Wyk.
A blue towel was also found next to the deceased.
Anyone who is able to identify the man is asked to contact Detective Constable Peter Mndaweni at Brackenfell police station on 082 624 1320 or Crime Stop 08600 10111.

Residents to receive legal ownership over their properties

Housing misery of about 500 Delft residents and six elderly beneficiaries will be something of the past when the Western Cape Provincial Housing department grants the residents with title deeds to their properties.
MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela is expected to hand the deeds officially to residents during a ceremony later today.
He says beneficiaries should be reminded of their role in taking responsibility for maintaining their houses and discouraging the sense of state dependence.
Residents expected to receive the legal ownership to their properties include those who lived in the houses for over twenty years.
Department spokesman Zalisile Mbali says residents were deprived of benefits which title deeds holders are entitled to such as claims on property and other bank related benefits.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place this evening at the Delft Civic Centre.

Investigations into government tenders given to companies that involve ANC Youth League President Julius Malema, will be completed today.
The Office of the Public Prosecutor says the investigation is looking into tenders awarded by 10 municipalities to companies in which Malema has some involvement.
These included a 39-point-3-million-Rand sewerage reticulation project and 28-million-Rand municipal infrastructure upgrade projects.
Malema has denied his involvement in any lucrative tender deals.

The City has announced that operating at the FIFA Fan Fest on the Grand Parade have now changed as the matches kick off later during the knockout stages of the tournament.
The city’s Pieter Cronje says the Fan Fest will now open at 1pm.
Meanwhile, strong winds on Saturday night had forced the venue to be closed.
However Cronje assures that everything is back on track.
The venue has open daily for the duration of the World Cup.

Soccer fans attacked in Mpumalanga

A group of foreign soccer fans has been held up at gunpoint in Mpumalanga.
The incident happened at the group’s lodge in Hazyview, after the Australian Socceroos’ match against Serbia in Nelspruit last week. A gang of four men ambushed three Australians, a French citizen and a British couple when they returned to the lodge.
The victims were tied up before being robbed.
It is reported that the attackers groped an Australian woman, but Mpumalanga police say they only received an armed robbery complaint.

A mother and her child have died after their Strandfontein shack caught fire in the early hours of this morning.
Cape Town’s Disaster Management Service’s Wilfred Solomons Johannes says another person has been rushed to hospital.
A 20 year old woman and her infant were burnt beyond recognition while a man who was also in the shack escaped with burn wounds.
He sustained serious burns and was transported to hospital.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Aircraft makes emergency landing on N1 highway

Motorists on the N1 highway between Winburg and Bloemfontein had to pull over this morning to make room for a light aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing.
The pilot told paramedics who rushed to the scene motorists had made his job of landing on the highway much easier by quickly assessing the situation and pulling off to the side of the road.
He said he had five passengers onboard when the plan developed mechanical problems.
Nobody was injured, but the pilot and passengers were all treated for shock.
The highway had to be closed to traffic while the plane was removed.

It is reported from Canada that black-clad protestors demonstrating at the G20 summit in Toronto have smashed storefronts and wrecked a police car, while riot police donned gas masks in anticipation of an escalation of violence.
At least three people were wounded, but paramedics were unable to reach them due to the protest.
Many demonstrators chanted slogans aimed both at the Group of 20 of the world’s major economies and police tactics.

Ghana reached the quarter finals of the World Cup for the first time by eliminating the United States with an extra-time 2-1 win at Royal Bafokeng in Rustenburg, thanks to a thumping goal from Asamoah Gyan.
The Black Stars became only the third African team in history to make it to the World Cup quarter finals.
The African National Congress has thanked Ghana for salvaging the continent’s image after five other African teams were knocked out.
Meanwhile, Uruguay became the first team to make it through to the quarter finals when they eliminated a game South Korea 2-1 in the pouring rain in the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

South Africa has produced near perfect World Cup

World football governing body FIFA says South Africa is half way through to organising a perfect World Cup and one of the best the world has seen.
General Secretary Jerome Valcke says South Africa could now be seen as “plan B” for future organisers.
He says they have gone beyond their targets on everything, including the number of visitors to South Africa.
The number of tickets sold also exceeds the number sold in Germany.
Speaking at a media conference to mark the beginning of the Round of 16, Valcke said organisers were now working to ensure that things go smoothly for the closing ceremony.

Six fled with five firearms

Stellenbosch police is investigating an armed robbery case after six men allegedly robbed five men of their firearms.
Spokesperson Captain Rene Matthee says it is alleged that on Thursday night the suspects armed with knives entered the premises at Beaulla, Claude Nine Farm, Devonval.
“Their faces were covered and they were wearing gloves.
They threatened the victims and demanded the keys to the safe,” said Captain Matthee.
The suspects then tied the victim’s hands with belts and ropes and locked them up in a bathroom.
They fled with five firearms, cellphones, jewellery, two Laptops, a Sony camera and six lenses valued at about R850 000.
Captain Matthee says it is also being investigated how the suspects fled scene.
No arrests have been made since.

Delft police is investigating a murder case following yesterday’s incident where a man was fatally shot in Amur Street, Eindhoven.
Spokesperson Captain Joe Wilson says it is alleged that an unidentified man approached a 45 year old man in the yard and fired a shot at him, critically injuring him in the head.
He was transported to Tygerberg hospital where he later died due his injuries.
The suspect fled the scene on foot.
“He is described as a colored male in his early twenties, clothed in a black hooded top, blue jeans and black and white takkies,” said Wilson.
The deceased is known as Abram Visser residing at Gilbert Street in Eindhoven, Delft.

Congress of the People president Mosiuoa Lekota has accused his deputy Mbhazima Shilowa of inappropriately taking power over the party's parliamentary funds.
Lekota says a bank was advised earlier this month that Shilowa was not authorised to act as principle signatory for funds in Parliament.
The party then sent a letter to the bank reinstating Lolo Mashiane, Julie Killian and Dennis Bloem as the signatories to the parliamentary account.
Lekota says a full, independent audit of the matter will be proposed at Copes’ congress national committee meeting on Friday.

About a thousand Ghanaian fans who were sent to South Africa by the government to cheer the national team have been sent home, despite the team being the only African side to qualify for the next stage of the World Cup.
Fans were sent to cheer the Black Stars in the group stage of the tournament.
The Ghanaian government says its budget does not cover fans staying on.
Ghana are up against the USA in Rustenburg tonight in the round of 16 of the tournament.

City Traffic Officials intensify operations during WC

City of Cape Town Traffic Services says they have managed to maintain normal service delivery levels during the World Cup period, despite the deployment of many additional traffic officials.
The additional traffic personnel were deployed to the Cape Town Stadium, FIFA Fan Fest™ and the four fan jols across the city.
Traffic officials add that various specialised units have also intensified their enforcement operations.
“Traffic Services began preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ long before the first whistle was blown,” officials say in a statement.
Since the start of the tournament two weeks ago various specialised Traffic Services units recorded more than four thousand offences, including 830 driving violations, 721 taxi-related offences and 279 offences related to passenger overloads.
In addition, 12 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 20 taxi drivers for permit-related offences, and two drivers for reckless or negligent driving.
Officials have appealed to motorists driving without number plates to have them fitted to their vehicles immediately, as they will issue suspension notices to drivers found to contravene the law.

More foreign visitors flock in South Africa for WC

The department of Home Affairs has confirmed that there is a steady increase in the number of foreign visitors to South Africa as the World Cup enters its knock out phases.
The department says yesterday their Movement Control System, launched by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, recorded a total volume of foreign travellers as 744 520 for the period 01-24 June 2010.
Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa says an additional 32 743 foreign travellers arrived as at 24 June 2010.
Mamoepa says the figure shows visitors arriving from various Southern African Development Community countries, but also a high number of visitors from countries like Britain, the USA, Germany, Brazil and Mexico.
The figure of nearly three-quarters of a million people entering South Africa includes those who would normally be coming to the country, not exclusively for the World Cup.

Six Pakistanis were arrested for allegedly issuing false documents to illegal immigrants.

Thousands of Eskom employees confirmed today that while they would not yet embark on strike action, they have resolved to retain their right to take industrial action if their demands are not met.
The National Union of Mineworkers, national Union of Metalworkers and Solidarity are giving Eskom until Tuesday to put an improved offer on the table.
NUM, who represents about 32 000 workers employed at Eskom, criticised managers for spending more than R12.5 million on World Cup tickets.
Eskom’s managing director of distribution, Ayanda Noah, conceded that the parastatal had purchased over 1 100 tickets,of which about 700 were hospitality tickets, worth nearly R17 000.

Two people have died and two others injured after a truck and car collided at the intersection of Oswald Pirow Street and the turn-off from the N1, in the Cape Town CBD this afternoon.
ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley says the truck collided into the left side of the car, which resulted in the death of both the left front and rear passenger.
“Two other occupants of the car sustained moderate injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.
“The reason for the collision is unknown at this stage but the incident is being investigated by the police,” said Wadeley.
Meanwhile Wadeley added that a waste technician, believed to be in his late thirties, was killed in an accident that occurred in Uitsig, Durbanville.
“It is alleged that the man was giving the waste removal truck a guide while it reversed. The man is believed to have then tripped and fell, which resulted in the truck riding over him.
“When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the man lying next to the back of the truck, he had sustained severe trauma and was sadly already dead,” said Wadeley.
Police were in attendance and are investigating the incident.

Two cable thieves were caught red-handed and arrested in the Atlantis Industrial Area by the Metro Police’s Metal Theft Unit also known as the Copperheads yesterday.
The two men from Atlantis, aged 38 and 52 were unaware of the presence of the police and the Copperheads in the premises as they were busy trying to steal the cables.
According the law enforcement officials the men had already dug a hole and damaged an 11kV cable that provides power to the area.
The officers confronted them as they waited for other men to come and finish off the job that the suspects had started.
Spokesperson for Specialised Law Enforcement Services, Neil Arendse says since the crime occurred in the early hours of the morning, the incident caused minimal disruption to the area but damages amounted to R50 000.
“The perpetrators were detained at the Atlantis Police Station on charges of attempted theft and malicious damage to property and are to still to appear in court,” Arendse said.
He says the investigation continues and the police are trying to find other incidents that the group can be linked to.

Three mine workers have died in an underground explosion at Harmony Gold's Phakisa mine in Welkom in the Free State.
Harmony Gold Minong spokesperson Esha Brimjmohan says the accident occurred late last night more than two-kilometers below the surface.
Brimjmohan says the employees were part of a rescue team that were busy investigating a suspected fire underground at the time of the accident.
“The explosion occurred last night at approximately laft past ten in the evening.
“Management together with the representatives of the Department of Mineral resources worked through the night on the rescue operation,” said Brimjmohan.
Less than a week ago another worker was killed in a rock fall at the same mine.

Government has announced it intends to make third party insurance for motorists compulsory.
Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele said in a reply to a parliamentary question that his department will, however, first have to draw up a strategy which would take into account the financial status of vehicle owners and the existing fuel levy.
It is reported that between 65 and 70 percent of the estimated 9.4 million vehicles on SA roads do not have third party insurance.
However an official in the department said the project was still in its "brainstorming" stage.
Meanwhile it is reported in KwaZulu-Natal, 21 people were injured this morning when a bus left a road in Tongaat, overturned and crashed into a river.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks says the bus ploughed through 40-metres of bush.
Mechanical failure is thought to have caused the driver to lose control of the bus.

Remains of Libyan air disaster victims repatriated

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has confirmed that the 13 South African citizens who were killed in last month’s Libyan air crash have all been identified and their mortal remains have been repatriated.
In total, 103 people were killed when the plane from Johannesburg went down near Tripoli.
The department has thanked the Disaster Victim Identification Authority of the Netherlands for its speedy work.
Interpol also played a significant role, facilitated by the South African Police Force.

A 46 old man from Mitchell's Plain who stands accused of a double murder was arrested this morning in Kuilsriver.
Igshaan Isaacs has been accused of shooting his ex-wife and a Muslim cleric at her Beacon Valley home earlier this week.
The same man was arrested for domestic charges and recently been released from police custody.
“The detective went to the court and raised all these issues… it is even in the docket when the detective opposed bail for this man. Still the magistrate allowed this man to go,” said Michael Jacobs from the Mitchell’s Plain Community Policing Forum.

MPs unhappy with punishment of fraudulent officials

Revelations that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) lost over R1-million has sparked unhappiness from opposition benches in parliament.
The agency tasked with the administration of social grants also incurred a further R69-million in irregular expenditure as a result of officials failing to follow proper tendering procedures.
Although Social Development minister Edna Molewa indicated that she took action against the officials involved, MPs believe she needs to explain precisely why officials have not been following the legislative procedures that govern the awarding of tenders.
Democratic Alliance shadow minister on social development Patricia Kopane says the loss of funds in the agency constitutes a direct criminal misconduct.
“This excessive irregular expenditure points to a broader trend of chronic mismanagement and a disregard for the correct distribution of public funds,” Kopane said.
In a written reply to parliamentary questions Molewa indicated that officials found to be involved in misconduct were dealt with, including two being dismissed, one suspended without pay and money recovered from some officials.
Kopane however says the written warning to officials involved with the R69-million irregular expenditure is not sufficient sanction.
“The administration of public funds is a serious responsibility that is governed by stringent procedures precisely to ensure the maintenance of public trust. Any breach of that trust must bring with it equally serious measures to ensure the prevention of future transgressions,” added Kopane.

COSATU says while it welcomes a report indicating a decrease in new HIV infections in the country; further investigations are needed to “establish definitively whether there is indeed such a significant improvement and the extent of reduction in new infections”.
The report released by the Human Sciences Research Council and Imperial College London, indicated a 35% reduction in new infections between 2002 and 2008.
The trade union federation says in a statement that they together with the Treatment Action Campaign, the SA Medical Association and other civil society organisations feel that the report, could lead to complacency about the threat of HIV and fewer people volunteering for HIV testing.
The statement adds that “it is therefore essential that there should be no let-up in the national campaign to encourage people to get themselves tested for HIV and to change their behaviour and practice safer sex through using condoms”.
COSATU concludes that the campaign to test fifteen million people in the next year must be implemented with even greater urgency.

Another would be initiate has died in the Eastern Cape at an illegal circumcision school bringing the number to 33.
Provincial health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says this morning the youth died in a village of Moyeni near Libode where one youth died hours earlier.
Kupelo is quoted as saying that last week, representatives from the health department went to the villagers who hid these boys away.
He said when department officials raided the school last week they managed to rescue only one boy, who was still being treated in hospital for dehydration and septicaemia.
Two would-be initiates died yesterday, one at Machibi village near Port St Johns, and the other in the Lusikisiki area.
News of the death came as traditional leaders sought to extend a moratorium on circumcision to the whole of Pondoland.

Independant Democrats Councillor Brett Herron has welcomed yesterday’s sacking of DA Councillor Charlotte Tabisher.
Tabisher was found guilty on eight counts of misconduct including the acceptance of money from locals for state sub-subsidised houses and fraud.
Herron says they are pleased that Local Government MEC Anton Bredell acted swiftly to remove Councillor Tabisher from office.
"It is vitally important that we send a clear message that corrupt public representatives will be removed from office without hesitation. Voters are tired of politicians promising to clamp down on corruption, but then failing to act accordingly," said Herron.
He added that with the severe shortage of housing in Cape Town there is already much scepticism and suspicion with regards to the housing allocation process.

Eskom to put revised offer on the table

Unions have lowered its initial demand of a 15% pay increment to 9%.
Labour also demanded a R5 000 housing allowance but have lowered this to R4 000.
Nationwide strike action could threaten the country’s power supply during the World Cup tournament but Eskom assured it will implement contingency plans to mitigate the supply risk.

ER24’s Tristan Wadeley said it appeared as though the two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when the collision occurred.
“Both vehicles were badly damaged as a result of the collision and the occupants needed to be extricated by rescue crews from the Fire Department,” said Wadeley.
The two casualties, who were traveling in the same vehicle, were declared dead on the scene while the driver of the other vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital.

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has fired four ministers, and shifted a fifth to another position, saying they failed a performance review.
Tsvangirai removed the ministers, who are all part of his Movement for Democratic Change party.
This is after 16 months of a troubled government of national unity in the country.
Tsvangirai says the slow pace of rehabilitating South Africa’s northern neighbour have led to a loss of confidence in the new administration amongst the electorate.
This is his first cabinet shuffle since he took office in February last year.

The councillor from Athlone was axed yesterday by Local government MEC Anton Bredell following allegations that she accepted cash for housing.
Bredell says he agreed with the city council’s findings that Tabisher has contravened the code of conduct by helping a member of the public draw up fraudulent housing documents.
She was also fined 10-thousand-Rand
Bredell expressed that he wants to see effective local government in the province.
“We, as a province are not doing our best to spread the ‘gospel’ of good local government. Councillors and public officials are elected to serve the people, and not their pockets,” Bredell said.

Equal Education is not convinced with MEC Donald Grant’s response about the text book crisis among matric learners at two Khayelitsha schools.
It describes Grant’s response as unsatisfactory and evasive.
“The thrust of the MEC's response is because the Western Cape is the leading province in education. It is unjustified for Equal Education and Khayelitsha matric learners to raise concerns about not having textbooks for the entire year,” said the organisations Yoliswa Dwane.
She argues that the WCED’s relative success in many areas should not be used to defend specific failures.
EE says Chris Hani Senior Secondary Schools, matrics have not been provided with a Physical Science textbook, nor Music textbooks despite the school being an Arts and Culture focus school.
Matrics at the school are also sharing isiXhosa, Mathematics and Life Sciences textbooks.
At Kwamfundo, there are significant numbers of matrics without isiXhosa and Business Studies textbooks, and others forced to share English, Life Sciences, Geography and Life Orientation textbooks.

Two arrested for drug and stolen property possession

Two suspects will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of possession of drugs and presumable stolen property.
The arrest follows a break through in an intensive investigation into numerous housebreaking cases reported at the weekend in the Woodstock area.

Two suspects will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of possession of drugs and presumable stolen property.
The arrest follows a break through in an intensive investigation into numerous housebreaking cases reported at the weekend in the Woodstock area.

Strong opposition for Chris Hani's murderer parole application

The parole application of one of former South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani’s killer, Clive Derby-Lewis has been met with a lot of opposition from various political groups.
This morning the SACP announced their strong opposition to the application in Pretoria today.
The party’s Malesela Maleka says Derby-Lewis deserves to "rot in jail".
The Democratic Alliance said it was inappropriate that he be considered for parole.
DA spokesperson on Correctional Services James Selfe says whilst it is true that in terms of legislation he is entitled to a parole hearing after serving 15 years in prison the vast majority of inmates with life sentences wait 25 years before being considered for parole.
“The case should be considered in the light of Mr Derby-Lewis’s crimes, which were particularly heinous and very nearly brought South Africa to the brink of a civil war,” Selfe said.
Selfe adds that the parole should only be considered until he has served a substantially longer sentence.
Derby-Lewis was convicted for his part in the murder of the SACP's general secretary in 1993.
His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment when the death sentence was abolished.
His last application for parole was dismissed by the High Court in Pretoria in March last year.

Bafana Bafana Head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says it has been an honour and a privilege for him working with the national squad.
In an emotional address the coach announced he is now looking forward to some time off.
He is set to take a break until the end of the year, adding that if he were to coach in future, it would only be in Brazil.
The 67-year-old is the only man to have coached six World Cup teams.
He managed Brazil to championships at the 1994 World Cup, the 2004 Copa América, and the 2005 Confederations Cup.
Parreira is one of two coaches that has led five national teams to the World Cup: Kuwait in 1982, United Arab Emirates in 1990, Brazil in 1994 and 2006, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010.

City Power is working frantically to restore power to parts of northern Johannesburg following outages earlier this morning.
Several suburbs have been affected, and City Power’s Louis Pieterse says technicians are working on the problem.
City Power has been heavily criticised because of continuous outages in recent weeks.

Mitchells’ Plain police are requesting the assistance of the public in tracing a 46 year old male who can assist in a double murder case that occurred in Beacon Valley yesterday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ian Williams says police were called in Oval South Street, Beacon Valley on Tuesday where a 31 year old man and a 28 year old female were found with gunshot wounds.

In a weekly power supply status report, the parastatal says contingency plans will be put in place should the strike go ahead.

Drugs worth half a million confiscated in Woodstock

Woodstock police is searching for the owner of the house in Durham Square where they confiscated stolen items and drugs worth R500 000.
Police’s Sergeant Hilton Malila says the bust follows their investigation into number of housebreaking cases that were reported at the station since Friday at the Durham Square.
“We searched one of the rooms at the Durham Square residents, and recovered most of the goods that was reported stolen during the housebreaking incidents,” said Malila.
The goods recovered were four digital cameras, three laptops, jewelry, sound equipment, four computer hard drives, 102cm Samsung Flat screen television and computer equipment.
During the search a plastic bag, containing uncut Heroin, Unga and hashish to the value of R500 000 were also confiscated.
“No arrest has been made during the confiscations. We are searching for the owner of the room, whose identity known,” said Malila.
Police investigates a case of possession of suspected stolen property.
But Malila acknowledged that arrest in the matter is imminent.

Uraunguay and Mexico have both proceeded to the next round of the FIFA World Cup tournament following unsuccessful attempts by South Africa and France to do so in Group A.
Uruanguay has not beaten to all the three matches played in Group A.
The score at Free State Stadium between France and South Africa end 2 -1with Bafana leading.
Both Bafana’s goals were scored in the 1st half.
Bongani Khumalo scored in the 20th minute followed by Katlego ‘Killer’ Mphela and 37th minute.

Cosatu shocked at SA’s job loss stats

Congress of South African Trade Unions has expressed its shock at today’s report by Statistics South Africa indicating the country lost 79,000 jobs in the first quarter of this year.
The report reveals that from January to March, employment in the formal, non-agricultural economy fell by 1% - to 8.08 million.
Cosatu says this comes on top of the loss of 870,000 jobs last year.
“Then we were in the midst of a major recession which pushed the unemployment rate up to 25.2% - 32.5% if you include those who have given up seeking work,” says the union’s Patrick Craven.
The construction industry alone lost 7,000 jobs in the first quarter from the previous three months compared with the same period last year, mainly from the completion of the World Cup stadiums.
Craven says the figure confirms their view that the country is in the midst of a profound economic crisis.
“They will make the federation more determined than ever to campaign in the short term for a substantial cut in interest rates by the Reserve Bank on 22 July 2010, to give a boost to investment, and in the longer term for a new economic growth path,” added Craven.

The African National Congress says they will not charge Cosatu leader Zwelinzima Vavi over claims he made that certain senior members of the party are corrupt.
The ANC says the party’s National Working Committee discussed the matter at their bi-monthly meeting and felt that charging Vavi would not be the best route to take.

The South African government calls on the nation to continue supporting the national football as they encounter France in their final Group A match at Mangaung Stadium in Bloemfontein this afternoon.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe says South Africans need to rally behind Bafana Bafana in the same way the nation did prior to the start of the tournament, and ensure that the spirit remains high.
Motlanthe adds that everybody this time needs to be proud of being a South African as it is the first time this kind of soccer event being hosted on African soil.

Unidentified man dies after accident in Brackenfell

Public assistance is required after a man passed away in Tygerberg hospital after being rescued from a trench in Brackenfell.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Erica Crous says police were called to the scene of an accident up arrival they found a white Toyota Corolla, registration, on the left side of the road in Kruispad, Brackenfell. There was no-one in the vehicle.
Crous says according the information the driver of the Toyota was driving in the direction of Bottelary Road in Kruispad, when he lost control over his vehicle.
“He collided against the wall at the back of business premises, where the vehicle came to a standstill. There was very slight damage to the vehicle. No other vehicles were involved.
The driver of the vehicle was found in a trench in front of the vehicle. The trench is estimated to be approximately 3,5 to 4 meters deep.
“He was removed by ER24 and taken to Tygerberg hospital. At that stage, according to emergency services, the man was in a critical and unstable condition. It was unclear what type of injuries he sustained,” said Crous.
The man’s identity is still unknown. He is approximately six feet tall and is of big build. He was wearing a yellow and black t-shirt and black trousers. He was wearing brown sandals. He is estimated to be in his late twenties or early thirties.

Text book shortages hinder Grade 12 learners’ success- claims advocacy group

Western Cape provincial education authorities may face a lawsuit if the alleged shortage of textbooks, particularly for matric learners is not addressed soon.
The stern warning came from advocacy group Equal Education claiming its members who are doing grade 12 learners at Chris Hani and Kwamfundo High Schools in Khayelitsha, do not have textbooks and some are sharing textbooks with their colleagues.
EE says although it fully supports the Education Department’s 100 % pass rate campaign and other initiatives aimed at achieving this goal, the reality is that many matric learners do not have necessary textbooks to fully prepare for the final examinations.
“The National Department of Basic Education require that each learner should have a textbook for each of his subject to take home, do homework, and study from,” said spokesperson Yoliswa Dwane.
Dwane further says with just over three months left before the final examinations, there are learners who are struggling to do their homework and studies because among other things they do not have textbooks.
Dwane also stated that a letter of demand has been sent to the education ministry demanding books be provided or face legal action.
Contacted for comment Education MEC Donald Grant confirmed that he received the letter but said the issue of textbooks for schools is an administrative matter strongly relying of funding.
“This whole issue depends on the norms and standards of funding for schools, and from their budgets they then procure the necessary textbooks,” Grant said.
Grant however added that they will investigate the matter and look into it “as soon as possible”.

“This whole issue depends on the norms and standards of funding for schools, and from their budgets they then procure the necessary textbooks,” Grant said.
Grant however added that they will investigate the matter and look into it “as soon as possible”.
Police constable and reservist in court for robbery

A police constable and a reservist appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court yesterday on charges of robbery, theft, assault and kidnapping.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Siphokazi Mawisa says the two members were arrested over the weekend after a case was reported by a male complainant on the 14 of June 2010.
“The complainant alleged that he and a friend were walking to a garage in Khayelitsha when they were confronted by the two members. The members were on duty and, in uniform and drove in a marked police van.
“The complainant alleged that the members robbed him of his cellular phone and two beers that he had in his possession,” said Mawisa.
She added that the two put him in the back of the police van and drove to Mnandi beach where they allegedly assaulted him.
“The complainant managed to escape and reported the incident to the Lingelethu-West police station later the day.
“The investigation was launched and the complainant’s cellular phone was later recovered at one of the members’ homes in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. The members were arrested and made a court appearance yesterday,” said Mawisa.
They are remanded in custody at Pollsmoor Prison and will appear again today for a bail application. Internal disciplinary procedures were also instituted against the members added Mawisa.

Congress of South African Trade Unions has welcomed the report by the Human Sciences Research Council which indicates that there has been a 35% reduction in the rate of new HIV infections in South Africa between 2002 and 2008.
Just above 1 percent of South Africans between the ages of 15 and 49 were newly infected annually between 2005 and 2008, compared to 2% from 2002-2005.
The decline was mostly due to a 60% reduction in incidence among young women, aged 15-24.
Cosatu’s Patrick Craven attributed this to various campaigns by government and civil society.
“The credit for this welcome news must undoubtedly go to the united campaign led by government and civil society to persuade young people of the need for changes in behaviour and to get themselves tested,” Craven said.
Craven however cautioned that the rate of infection is still too high, and warned against any complacency or slowing down of the HIV Prevention and Testing Campaign.

Bafana Bafana may treat themselves and their immediate family members at the Kruger National Park should they get through to the next round of the World Cup.
SANParks made the offer to the national squad who have the daunting task to beat the troubled French squad when they clash tomorrow at Mangaung stadium in Bloemfontein.
SANParks’ David Mabunda says the offer will be doubled, should the team make it through to the quarter-finals.
“The Kruger National Park is an icon of South Africa, and if our national team goes through to the next round, they will be claiming their place as true icons of the country too. It will be an honour to host them at South Africa’s most recognised tourist destination,” said Dr Mabunda.
The African National Congress Youth League on the other hand has called on all South Africans to continue supporting South Africa's national soccer team, Bafana Bafana.
“All South Africans should appreciate that support for Bafana Bafana is support for South Africa as a country and its ability to overcome all difficulties. Bafana Bafana needs the continued support by all South Africans, when they are not winning, because supporting the team only when they win is not real support,” said the league’s Floyd Shivambu.
Shivambu however raised concern about Bafana Captain Aaron Mokoena, saying they believe his inclusion in the squad should be re-visited.
“The coach and tactical team should honestly assess the Captain's readiness for the soccer match against France on Tuesday,” added Shivambu.
South Africa needs to score several goals in order to progress to the Round of 16.
Should the team be unable to qualify for the next round, they will be the first host nation ever to do so.

Man dies after bakkie overturns on N1

A man has died after the vehicle he was traveling in overturned on the N1, near Klapmuts Road, in Joostenbergvlakte this afternoon.
ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley says the bakkie is believed to have been traveling in the direction of Paarl when a tyre allegedly burst, causing the vehicle to overturn. The bakkie then crossed the centre island and hit an oncoming car.
“When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the man lying in the middle of the road and was unfortunately already dead.
“The driver of the bakkie declined to be transported to hospital. There were no injuries reported from the other vehicle involved,” said Wadeley.
The N1 was closed in the direction of Cape Town while emergency services worked on scene.

Four arrested for attempted murder of former Rwandan army chief

Four people have been arrested in connection with the shooting of an exiled Rwandan army general.
Lieutenant General Fautsin Kayumba Nyamwasa was shot in the stomach at his Melrose Arch home on Saturday, in what his wife described as an assassination attempt.
Nyamwasa fled to South Africa after being accused of terrorism by Rwandan president Paul Kagame.

A 28 year-old suspect from New Cross Road has been arrested for illegal possession fire arm and ammunition.
The suspect has also been on the run for alleged business robbery in the area.
Police investigations lead to his arrest after he abandoned his residence and went hiding.

A 47 year old man is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today following his arrest in Adderley Street yesterday for theft out of a motor vehicle.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederic Van Wyk says members patrolling around the Fan Fest in Grand Parade, noticed the suspect running away from a parked, white Toyota Hilux, motor vehicle.
They pursued the suspect, and during the search stolen items were found in his possession.
“During a pursued, the police arrested the suspect in Adderley Street. The police searched the suspect, and recovered a GPS navigating system and charger in his possession,” said Van Wyk.
It is alleged that the suspect, broke the passenger side window of the vehicle, and removed the recovered items from inside the vehicle.
Van Wyk adds the recovered items were returned to the owner.
“According to the owner, he parked his motor vehicle at about 08:30 yesterday in Adderley Street,” Van Wyk said.

Three people have been shot and killed in Freedom Road, Overcome Heights in Muizenberg.
Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp says upon arrival at the scene, police discovered the bodies of three males, who had been fatally shot.
“One person a resident of Mitchells Plain was found with a gunshot wound to the head and chest, the second a local resident with a wound to the chest and the third an unknown male, also sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.
“Police are investigating the possibility that the murders are gang related. The bodies were discovered outside the residence, which forms part of an informal settlement,” said Knapp.
A murder case has been opened and Detective Constable Patrick Mdokwana has been appointed as the investigating officer.
Anybody with any information regarding the above or who may be able to shed light on the identity of the third deceased is asked to contact the investigating officer on 021 787 9000 or 071 904 7404.

A man is a critical condition after crashing his car into a factory wall in Brackenfell last night.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks says paramedics arrived on the scene to find the vehicle had crashed into a factory wall but was resting over a trench that ran along the factory wall.
Banks says the driver was found inside the trench about 3m below the car.
“Emergency personnel stabilised the car before entering the trench. The man had suffered a possible head injury, along with spinal injury and was in a very serious condition.
“He was transported to Tygerberg Hospital in a serious condition,” said Banks.
Banks added that it is unclear what caused the driver to lose control but it is believed that he may have crashed his car and then tried to get out when he fell into the trench below him. Where he landed was directly underneath the car.

The South African rugby is reportedly on the verge of introducing a Twenty/20 version of the game.
Former Springbok Rassie Erasmus and attorney Frikkie Erasmus are believed to be behind the plans, said to have the provisional backing of the South African Rugby Union.
The competition could start in January 2012, based on the successful Indian Premier League cricket tournament.
Springbok, All Black, English, French and Argentine rugby stars are set to make millions if the plans get off the ground.

This follows after the team supporter, identified as Pavlos Joseph, entered the English team’s change room after the World Cup match between England and Algeria on Friday night.
Police immediately initiated an investigation into the incident after it was reported after the match.
CCTV footage was analysed and the suspect was identified and traced to his place of accommodation in Cape Town.
Police say the National Prosecuting Authority of the Department of Justice has cooperated fully on the investigation.

It is believed the plane disappeared en route from Cameroon to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Australia's Sundance Resources says the chartered plane travelling from Yaounde to Yangadou failed to arrive in Congo yesterday.
The flight was carrying nine passengers, who were visiting the company's iron ore projects.
A search has been launched for the group of Australian mining executives.

The department of Home Affairs has reported that in the early days of the 2010 FIFA World Cup almost half a million people entered the country specifically for the tournament.
The department says in the first seven of the soccer spectacle 456-thousand people entered South Africa.
With South African Tourism conservatively estimating that each visitor will spend R12 000, they would have added just under R5.5 billion to the country's economy in the first week.
In addition economists predict that a further R1billion was spent during the opening weekend.
Accounting firm Grant Thornton estimates that the World Cup will pump at least R93 billion into the economy.

SAPS take over security at WC stadiums

Security at 2010 World Cup stadiums has come under serious threat in the early days of the soccer tournament leading the Local Organising Committee to allow police to take over security services at four stadiums.
SAPS will provide security services at the Soccer City, Ellis Park, Cape Town Stadium and the Durban stadiums for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
During a meeting in the week between the police and the organising committee, LOC Chief Executive Officer Danny Jordaan thanked the police for their committed support to ensure the success of the tournament.
"The 2010 FIFA World Cup must remain a special celebration of Africa's first FIFA World Cup. We will ensure that the event environment is one that contributes to this celebration," Jordaan said.
The National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said: "Our priority is the safety of the tournament and the country as a whole. We will perform our responsibilities with diligence and pride".

Security at 2010 World Cup stadiums has come under serious threat in the early days of the soccer tournament leading the Local Organising Committee to allow police to take over security services at four stadiums.
SAPS will provide security services at the Soccer City, Ellis Park, Cape Town Stadium and the Durban stadiums for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
During a meeting in the week between the police and the organising committee, LOC Chief Executive Officer Danny Jordaan thanked the police for their committed support to ensure the success of the tournament.
"The 2010 FIFA World Cup must remain a special celebration of Africa's first FIFA World Cup. We will ensure that the event environment is one that contributes to this celebration," Jordaan said.
The National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said: "Our priority is the safety of the tournament and the country as a whole. We will perform our responsibilities with diligence and pride".

Former President Nelson Mandela has rallied behind Bafana Bafana with the national team who faced with the daunting task of beating France by a large margin.
Madiba has been joined by business and other political leaders and South Africans have been encouraged to all wear yellow on Tuesday to boost the team.

Gauteng MEC devastated after her home burns

Arts and Culture MEC in Gauteng Nelisiwe Moerane is still in shocked after her home was torched during a burglary yesterday morning.
It is believed the MEC’s Meyerton home was set alight in the early hours of Saturday morning after criminals broke in.
"The extent of the damage is not yet known and this can only be determined once full investigations have been completed," a statement from Moerane's office said.
Moerane and her family were not at home when the incident occurred.
However the MEC’s spokesperson Nomvula Khalo said she is still devastated because she lost everything.
Khalo said Moerane was left with what she was wearing, everything burnt down.
"The police are investigating and we hope the perpetrators are brought to book," the statement said

Black Stars fly the flag high for Africa

Ghana, who are on three points in Group D, are flying the flag for Africa in their match with Australia in Rustenburg in North West at the moment.
The Aussies are the only team in the group without a point so far, with Germany and Serbia also on three points each.
Reports say South Africans have come out in numbers to support the Black Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.
But Brett Holman scored Australia’s first goal of the tournament in the 11th minute of a game the Aussies have to win.
There was drama in the 24th minute with Harry Kewell being sent off for a hand ball.
Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan kicked the penalty to level matters.
Earlier the world’s number four ranked team, the Netherlands, only managed to beat the number 45th ranked team, Japan, by one goal to nil at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Public urged to use public transport during WC

The national transport ministry has urged South Africans to make use of public transport.
The ministry says this will ensure that congestion on the country’s roads, during the World Cup, is minimised.
Minister Sbu Ndebele says the use of public transport during the soccer tournament will significantly reduce congestion on the roads and assist fans to arrive in good time for game.
Ndebele says government has invested R40 billion in a new and improved safe and reliable transport system.
He said that every stadium was accessible via public transport.
“Using public transport in South Africa provides an ideal opportunity for fans to form and cement common experiences across borders in Africa and the rest of the world. So we say to South Africans, get out of your nice cars, use public transport,” said Ndebele.
Soccer fans who have World Cup tickets can travel free with Metrorail to and from stations in the vicinities of the stadium.
An inter-provincial and regional road transport system which comprises luxury buses and mini-buses has been put in place for the month long tournament.

Kevin Costner steps in to curb Gulf oil disaster

Newsflash News Agency reports that British Petroleum is strongly denying claims from one of its partners that its behaviour was reckless in the run-up to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Anadarko Petroleum, the largest independent oil and gas company operating in the Gulf, owns 25-percent of the well.
It says the explosion could have been prevented.
Meanwhile, BP has given the green light to actor and environmentalist Kevin Costner and his oil clean-up devices.
Costner has been fighting for 17 years to put his devices into the Gulf to act as a preventative measure in case of an oil spill.
BP will now use the invention, which can suck thousands of gallons of oil a day and separate it from water.

Former ANC Youth League President now Police Deputy Minister Fikile Mbalula, has brushed off claims suggesting that South Africa could suffer a recovery of xenophobic attacks after the World Cup.
The ANC NEC member says in a statement that South Africa is not a "banana republic" and residents will not be allowed to get away with attacks on foreigners.
He says the reports have no foundation and only serve to influence the vulnerable in society to commit crime.
Mbalula stresses that the ministry has confidence in both the police and the people.

Western Cape police are investigation a drug syndicate this follows after a box carrying tik worth millions was confiscated in a bus in the Southern Cape.
Yesterday morning police pulled over a yellow Volvo bus on the N1 highway just outside Beaufort West for routine search operations.
The bus was searched during which a box containing ten plastic bags of Tik, about 10.5 kg was found, with an estimated street value of R3 million.
The drugs were not in the immediate possession of any person on the bus and therefore nobody has been arrested at this stage.
Meanwhile four suspects were arrested after they were found in possession of 20 uncut diamonds.
The suspects were nabbed by the Metro police through their Special Operations Unit while they were driving around Observatory.
The four were arrested and detained at the Woodstock Police Station.

Newsflash News Agency reports that the English Football Association has lodged a complaint with World Cup organisers Fifa after a fan breached security and entered the England dressing room at the Cape Town Stadium late last night.
The incident came after England was stunned by a 0-all draw with Algeria in Group C.
The intruder was escorted out after he verbally attacked coach Fabio Capello and David Beckham.
But the incident has angered the security-conscious Football Association.
Managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington says they will expect security to be watertight as the team head to Port Elizabeth for their must-win final group match against Slovenia on Wednesday.
In another security breach at the stadium, Algeria supporters managed to sneak fireworks past police.
They let off the crackers in celebration after the Desert Foxes managed to hold the much-vaunted England to a goalless draw.
And at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, almost 100 Fifa volunteers had to be treated for food poisoning.
Many of them suffered from vomiting and diarrhea after eating breakfast at the stadium yesterday.
The Organising Committee says samples of the food have been taken for laboratory testing.

Power utility Eskom says it has deployed technical teams around the country to monitor the electricity supply during the World Cup.
The state owned entity’s Andrew Etzinger says this follows repeated power cuts is Johannesburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni, frustrating soccer fans and other consumers.
Etzinger says they have discovered electricity theft in Gauteng, which could be the reason for the power cuts.
He says they are working to reduce illegal connections.
Meanwhile Telkom has decided to file for an overall tariff increase of less than one-percent in the interests of consumers and in a effort to ensure affordable telecommunications.
Managing director Nombulelo Moholi says they are confident the Independent Communications Authority will approve an overall increase of only nought-point-eight-percent.
Data tariffs would drop by just over two-percent. Subject to Icasa's approval, the new tariffs will become effective from the 1st of August.

Western Cape police are investigating circumstances surrounding an unauthorised entry of a member of the public into the changing rooms of the English soccer team at the Cape Town Stadium.
It is believed the unknown individual entered the players changing room after the match last night, where after he was escorted from the premises by a FIFA official.
He ranted at coach Fabio Capello and his players after their goalless World Cup draw with Algeria.
The intruder, wearing an England shirt, burst in at about a quarter-past-11 last night, just a few minutes before Princes William and Harry were due to meet the players.
He reportedly had to be talked out of the room by David Beckham.
Police spokesperson Colonel Billy Jones says at this stage the incident is now being given full investigation to determine.
“CCTV footage is being examined as part of the investigation, and all security personnel will be questioned to shed light on the matter,” said Jones.

Fifa says its Fan Fests, organised at 16 official venues around the world, played host to more than a million excited supporters during the first six days of the World Cup.
More than 800-thousand fans in ten South African venues and more than 400-thousand fans in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro, followed matches on the giant screens.
The best attended venues were mostly in sunny Durban, with 200-thousand spectators for the local Fan Fest, and Paris with more than 100-thousand spectators for an international location.

The football body’s legal affairs director Marco Villiger said in Johannesburg that teams would, however, require closer monitoring for what he described as “betting Mafia” activity in the next week.
Teams are battling to survive the first round and not to be sent home.
Fifa has created an intelligence-gathering and monitoring subsidiary company called Early Warning System.
On the field, Group D has been left wide open for Ghana after Serbia scored an upset 1-0 victory over favourites and three-times champions Germany at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Milan Jovanovic scored one minute after German striker Miroslav Klose was sent off with a red card. Spanish referee Alberto Undiano handed out nine yellow cards, the most so far in any game at this year's tournament.

Seven behind bars for drug dealing

The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Unit arrested seven suspects and confiscated large quantities of drugs following raids at four of the city’s suburbs.
Raids at Senator Park, Woodstock, Summer Greens and Gordon’s Bay on Wednesday and Thursday followed tip-offs from the public.
Metro Police spokesperson Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro says the raids are part of a clamp-down on drug-related offences and a follow up of successful operations held earlier this week in these areas.
Packets of rock and tik, along with retail and credit cards, a United Kingdom driver’s licence and a stolen cell phone were confiscated at the notorious Senator Park.
One suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property.
“Metro Police with Woodstock police conducted a raid in Lower Church Street on Wednesday where male and female suspects were arrested after 196 units of rock and units of unga and mandrax tablets were found in their possession,” said Faro.
Both suspects were charged with possession of illegal narcotics and the male suspect was charged with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.

The Eastern Cape Health department has confirmed that 21 boys have died at initiation schools across the province. The latest death occurred at the Magcakini School near Libode.
The department’s Sizwe Kupelo says police have raided illegal initiation schools, resulting in several arrests.
Khuphelo is quoted as saying the deaths occurred over the past 12 days, with nine of them occurring over the past 24 hours.
Earlier this week, seven under-aged initiates were rescued from an illegal initiation school run a 55-year-old unregistered traditional surgeon who had been arrested several times for the offence.
Health MEC Phumulo Masuale and the king of western Pondoland visited the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha yesterday.
They also visited illegal initiation schools in Mthatha, Libode and Lusikisiki, before meeting traditional leaders in the areas about the deaths.
Khuphelo added that the department doesn’t want to interfere in the customary practice, but is forced to step in because of the casualties and severe injuries.

The Dusi committee has confirmed the death of top paddler Graeme Pope-Ellis in a tractor accident on his farm outside Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
Pope-Ellis, an icon in the canoeing fraternity, had been ploughing when the tractor rolled over him.
The 62 year old emerged victorious in the marathon 15 times and participated in it for 46 consecutive years.
He is survived by his wife and daughter Leigh.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime launched Western Cape campaign to counter violence against women and children and calls for people to “Blow the Vuvuzela on Violence”.
UNODC launched this campaign on Monday in partnership with the Department of Social Development through funding from the European Union.
The campaign aims at raising awareness around gender and child based violence.
“We call upon people across all spectrums to speak out against these social evils and use the focus of the World Cup to highlight the plight of these victims,” said Sharon Kouta.
Kouta says violence against women and children and society’s most vulnerable groups is an everyday reality for millions in South Africa and the rest of the world.
UNODOC says the campaign plays on the popular “blow the whistle” tagline and calls for the eradication of violence against women and children encouraging victims to rally together and collectively reverse this scourge.
Kouta adds during the campaign, sporting events will be held in areas across the Western Cape to keep learners occupied in a constructive way, while providing them with practical information about where to get help if they fall victim to crime.
The event started at Ravensmead on Monday and today it is underway in Khayelitsha.
It will continue tomorrow at Gouritsmond and start again on Tuesday at Caledon, Hanover Park, Atlantis, Somerset West, Beaufort West and Mitchells Plain on respective dates and finish at Vredendal on July 2, 2010.

Kouta says violence against women and children and society’s most vulnerable groups is an everyday reality for millions in South Africa and the rest of the world.
UNODOC says the campaign plays on the popular “blow the whistle” tagline and calls for the eradication of violence against women and children encouraging victims to rally together and collectively reverse this scourge.
Kouta adds during the campaign, sporting events will be held in areas across the Western Cape to keep learners occupied in a constructive way, while providing them with practical information about where to get help if they fall victim to crime.
The event started at Ravensmead on Monday and today it is underway in Khayelitsha.
It will continue tomorrow at Gouritsmond and start again on Tuesday at Caledon, Hanover Park, Atlantis, Somerset West, Beaufort West and Mitchells Plain on respective dates and finish at Vredendal on July 2, 2010.
