ANC Officials abandon posts at provincial headquarters

African National Congress officials have abandoned their Cape Town office after disgruntled party members threatened to storm the provincial headquarters.

Yesterday, police had to be called after a group occupied the offices and held senior officials hostage.

They are protesting about the selection of candidates for the local government elections.

About 30 people from the Barcelona, Kanana and Europe informal settlements in Gugulethu are protesting outside the ANC Western Cape’s Thibault Square office, which is deserted and locked.

The demonstrators are accusing leaders of replacing their preferred candidate for ward councillor.
