Western Cape police are probing a case of murder after an off duty police officer was shot and killed in cold blood, in Oliver Tambo Drive in Samora Machel on Thursday morning.
The police’s Andre Traut said the sergeant arrived at his
home from his shift just before 7a.m when he was attacked by unknown men.
‘’At around 06:45 a 39 year old sergeant stationed at Cape
Town Central returned home after a 12 hour night shift when he was attacked by
armed criminals in front of his residence. He sustained several gunshot wounds
and succumbed to death on the crime scene. The victim was not armed with his
service pistol at the time of the incident and it is still unclear whether he
was killed for access to a firearm,’’ said Colonel Andrè Traut.
The Western Cape police commissioner, Lt Gen Thembisile
Patekile expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen
police officer, assuring them that they will track and trace the suspects so
that they can be brought to book.
‘’The investigation will be conducted by the Hawks and
anyone who is able to shed light on the circumstances of the incident is kindly
requested to contact Crime Stop anonymously on 08600 10111 or use the mobile
application MySAPS,’’ said Traut.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape’s Police Oversight &
Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, condemned the incident.
‘’It’s unacceptable that our SAPS officers are attacked and
killed in this manner. These men and women in blue who work under extremely difficult
circumstances make huge sacrifices to protect us.’’
