Tazne van Wyk’s killer to be sentenced on Valentine’s Day

The 57-year-old Moehydien Pangkaeker was found guilty of kidnap, rape, murder and mutilation of Tazne Van Wyk after she had gone missing from a tuckshop in Clare Street, Elsies River, on February 7, 2020.

Acting Judge Alan Maher will pass the sentencing of the accused on Valentine’s Day.

The 8-year-old girl’s decomposing remains were found dumped in a storm water drain off the N1 in Worcester on February 19, 2020.

State advocate Lenro Badenhorst argued that it is submitted that the accused is a repeat offender who indiscriminately targets young girls for sexual pleasure and therefore his moral blameworthiness is high. He labeled him as a monster who cannot be tolerated in a civilized community.

The State wants the Western Cape high court to hand down at least nine life sentences to the accused. On Wednesday, the Western Cape high court heard sentencing mitigation.

Acting Judge Alan Maher will mete out sentencing of Moehydien Pangaker on Valentine’s Day.
