Manenberg boy succumbs to injuries after being struck in the head by a bullet

A nine-year-old boy has succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday, after he was struck in the head by a bullet in Manenberg on Sunday.

The police’s FC van Wyk said the incident occurred in Towerkop. It is unclear whether the shooting was gang-related.

“This office can confirm that the nine-year-old boy died in hospital due to injuries sustained on Sunday, July 9. The attempted murder case is now changed to murder,” said Captain F.C van Wyk.

Videos of the boy lying on the sidewalk went viral.

Van Wyk confirmed that a 34-year-old man has been taken in for questioning.

The Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, has expressed his outrage towards this incident

‘’I am devastated and quite frankly angry to be informed that the boy has passed away. I am fed up that children who should have their entire life ahead of them being cut short by persons who has no regard for life.

‘’SAPS should leave no stone unturned. I want those responsible for this murder to be held accountable. The person that has been brought in for questioning should divulge any and all information as I want to these criminals behind bars,’’ he added.
