Man accused of murdering SAPS officer in Mfuleni intends to apply for bail

The case against a 59-year-old suspect who is accused of being behind the murder of an off-duty police officer in Mfueni, will appear for the third time, at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

It is alleged that on Friday, 3 November 2023, Phindile Sonyabashe and the victim, who was stationed at Harare police station, had an altercation, which resulted in the suspect stabbing the officer to death.

According to the Hawks' Siyabulela Vukubi, the incident occurred around 13:20.

'' [The suspect] have on Saturday, 04 November 2023 handed himself to the police as result of an engagement with Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for his alleged involvement in the murder of a police official in Mfuleni,'' said Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi.

Sonyabashe made his first court appearance on 6 November, and the matter was postponed to 9 November 2023 for bail information. He then appeared in court on the mentioned date, where the case was again postponed to 15 November 2023 for bail application.

Sonyabashe remains in custody.
