Taxi associations come to agreement over routes in Tokai area

The taxi violence that occurred in Tokai area, near Blue Route mall, has ended.

On Friday, a group of men caused damaged to a number of taxis in the vicinity of Blue Route mall. The violence also occurred on Saturday morning, leaving many commuters stranded.

In a joint statement from Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA), the taxi associations confirmed that they have resolved the issues that led to the violence over taxi routes.

The associations say it will continue to operate the route - during the morning operation both associations will take passengers to their respective destinations. It says that in the afternoon peak operations, CODETA Vrygrond and Khayelitsha-Wynberg associations will be stationed at the Blue Route Mall, while the CATA-Westlake vehicles will take passengers to the Blue Route Mall.

‘’Two additional patrol vehicles have been allocated from their respective association to assist the local working committee to monitor the route and to ensure that no further incidents of violence occur,’’ read the statement.



The two taxi associations says it will meet with the management of the Blue Route Mall to apologise for the incident and ‘’to assure them of no further incidents of violence and disturbance.’’
