Police are probing two separate murder cases after a 54-year-old man was shot and killed at a funeral in Ravensmead.
The man was attending his son’s, Bremwin 'Brempie' Moses, burial on Saturday in
Beverley Court, when a 26-year-old man shot and fatally wounded the father. The
son was shot and killed last Wednesday.
Shortly after the incident, mourners attending the funeral chased after the suspect and apprehended him, beating him to death. The suspect then ran away but was chased and apprehended by the community who attended the funeral and was beaten to death.
Western Cape police says the motive is gang-related.
‘’Ravensmead registered two separate murder cases for
investigation following a shooting incident that occurred this morning
Saturday, 2025-02-08 at 08:45 at Beverly Court, Ravensmead. A 54-year-old man
was shot and fatally wounded by a 26 year old man. The alleged shooter was
beaten to death on the scene of the incident,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk,
Western Cape police spokesperson.
‘’According to reports the deceased attended his son’s
funeral at the mentioned address when the suspect shot and fatally wounded him
with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. The suspect then ran away but was
chased and apprehended by the community who attended the funeral and was beaten
to death,’’ he added.
The Ravensmead Community Policing Forum said they were
dismayed by the event of two deaths at the funeral.
“The perpetrator was caught by members present, disarmed,
and beaten to death. Historically, this
is the first incident of this nature, and as Ravensmead CPF, we condemn in the
strongest terms this terrible precedent. It is an unspeakable act to do while
someone is being laid to rest,’’ said Lucian Davids, Ravensmead CPF Public
relations Officer.
“This does not inspire confidence in families, crime is
creeping much closer to our personal spaces and creates conditions where the
community is forced to act outside of legal bounds,’’ he added.
The local CPF called on the south African Police Service
(SAPS) to act swiftly, adding they are ‘’shocked, terrified, and disappointed
by this.”
