An elderly woman was discovered deceased at her Hanover Park home on Wednesday morning and circumstances surrounding her death are being probed by police.
In a statement, Western Cape police confirmed to Bush Radio
News that officers found the body of the 75-year-old woman inside her Surburg
walk home just after 8a.m.
‘’According to reports the son of the deceased left the
house for work on Tuesday 22 July at about 18:30. Upon his return this morning,
Wednesday 23 July 2025 at about 07:30,
he found the victim on the bed with her face on the pillow and the house
in disarray,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police
spokesperson.
Philippi police are investigating cases of murder and house
robbery.
Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) expressed sadness and said
it is alarmed by the brutal murder.
‘’This is now the third pensioner killed in Hanover Park in
as many weeks. We cannot allow this deadly trend to escalate. These are not
just statistics. They are mothers, grandmothers, and respected elders of our
communities. FACSA calls for immediate intervention from SAPS, community safety
stakeholders, and local leadership to urgently prioritise the safety of the
elderly, who can no longer protect themselves,’’ it said in a statement.
‘’We further urge residents to check in on elderly
neighbours, assist them where needed, and remain alert to any suspicious
activity. Our pensioners are the backbone of our communities. Their wisdom,
sacrifice, and presence must be honoured and protected,’’ it added.
