Cape Flats Safety Forum wants SAPS to activate 72-hr. plan, following killing of three-month-old Bonteheuwel baby

The Cape Flats Safety Forum has called on police to activate its 72-hour plan, after a three-month-old baby succumbed to injuries in hospital after he was caught in gang crossfire in Bonteheuwel, on Friday morning.

Police said two unidentified men entered a home on Yellowwood Street, and opened fire, leaving the baby with serious injuries. The suspects remain at large after fleeing the crime scene. Police said the gunmen entered a home to shoot at their target.

“Reports suggested two unidentified armed males entered the premises and proceeded to one of the living rooms. One of the men fired a gunshot in the direction of a female with a baby, leaving the three-month-old boy with serious injuries. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The unidentified suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is believed to be gang-related. Bishop Lavis police are investigating two counts of attempted murder,” said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’ We condemn the recent shooting in the strongest terms. We call on the SAPS to activate its 72-hour activation plan. Just earlier this week, we could observe how the activation plan came into effect with the smash-and-grab incident of MPs. We call on all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the alleged suspects,’’ said Abie Isaacs, Cape Flats Safety Forum chairperson.

Ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, lauded residents who rushed the child to the hospital and also thanked those who phoned the City’s emergency number and informed him.

“Because of you, Metro Police and Law Enforcement have already launched a manhunt for the two suspects identified in this senseless attack.’’

McKenzie confirmed the matter was gang-related.

“The father was targeted by the rival gang and was holding the baby in his arms when he was shot.’’
