Man arrested after fatally shooting a taxi driver in Kensington

Police arrested a 28-year-old ma after the suspect shot and killed a taxi driver in Kensington on Friday morning. Three other passengers left the incident unharmed. Police believe the attack could be retaliation.

‘’Reports suggested that the driver of a minibus taxi with three passengers stopped this morning, Friday 15 August 2025 at about 05:50, near the corners of 16th Avenue and Voortrekker Roads in Kensington when an unidentified man boarded the vehicle. The man drew a pistol and shot the driver from behind,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’The driver intended to respond , however, multiple gunshots then followed which resulted in him sustaining fatal injuries. The suspect then disembarked and fled to a nearby getaway vehicle with the firearm of the deceased in his possession.  The adult man was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Kensington police then launched a manhunt in pursuit of those responsible for this horrific incident. The motive for this attack is believed to be retaliation,’’ he added.

Kensington police are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder. The suspect will soon appear before the Cape Town Central Magistrates Court soon.
