Recalls of some VW, Merc, Jeep, and Chrysler vehicles

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has reminded consumers that product recalls are vital to ensure the safety of products in the marketplace, and prompt action is essential. This comes as more vehicle recalls has been announced.

Volkswagen of South Africa has recalled 374 of its Amarok vehicles. The affected vehicles were made available from 10 January 2025 to 12 June 2025.

VW says these vehicles are being recalled due to the possible loss of braking assistance that may be caused by the electromechanical brake servo control unit.

‘’According to VW, the braking system remains functional but requires additional effort when applying the brakes. If the issue manifests whilst the vehicle is in motion, the vehicle will require increased braking distance,’’ said the NCC in a statement.

Stellantis South Africa is also recalling its Jeep Wrangler and Chrysler 300C. According to the supplier, the recall follows defective Takata airbags.

‘’On the affected vehicles, the passenger airbag inflator may rupture during the airbag deployment phase. The rupturing of the airbag inflator may lead to metal fragments passing through the airbag and into the vehicle interior at high speed. This may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,’’ said Phetho Ntaba, NCC spokesperson.

The affected vehicles were made available nationally between 2009 and 2013 and also exported to Namibia and Botswana.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz South Africa is recalling 102 vehicles. The recall affects four (4) EQE-295 and ninety-eight (98) GLC-254 vehicles, which were made available from 2022 to 2025 and distributed nationwide.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the bolting of the steering coupling might not meet specifications.

‘’In this case, the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack might loosen over time. As a result of the defect, this might lead to a loss of the vehicle's steerability, increasing the risk of an accident,’’ said Ntaba.

Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised dealership. The necessary repair work will be carried out at no cost to the consumer.
