Western Cape police acted swiftly in apprehending a suspect following several shooting incidents that have been reported in the Mitchell’s Plain area on Saturday night.
A 23-year-old man was shot and killed just before 9p.m in a
suspected gang-related incident in Rocklands. Police say the man and his friend
was standing in front of his house in Silver Street when a blue Toyota
Yaris stopped with two men getting out
whereby one opened fire.
‘’According to reports while performing patrols in Rocklands SAPS members received a complaint of a shooting incident at the mentioned address, and upon arrival members found a 23 year old male with multiple gunshot wounds. It’s alleged that the complainant and his friend was standing in front of his house at the mentioned address when a blue Toyota Yaris with unknown registration stopped with two men getting out of which one had a firearm. The gunman opened fire on the victim by shooting him in the right shoulder and head respectively. He succumbed to his injuries on the crime scene,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.
Police reported that the same car was spotted in Eastridge,
10 minutes later, and fatally shot another 23-year-old victim.
‘’ At 21:00 a shooting incident happened at the corner of
Spine and AZ Berman Road, open field Eastridge, Mitchells Plain. Members
received a complaint of someone laying at the mentioned address on arrival
found a male laying on the field with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, it
is alleged that the 23 year old victim was walking on the field when a blue
Toyota Yaris with unknown registration approached the victim and started to
shoot at him then drove away. A murder was opened for investigation,’’ said van
Wyk.
In the same area but in a separate incident, a 23-year-old
was shot and fatally wounded at the corner of Kameel and Gazelle Street.
‘’At 21:30 a shooting incident happened at the corner of
Kameel Street and Gazelle, Eastridge, Mitchells Plain. A 23 year old male was
shot and fatally wounded. He sustain two shots to his neck. A murder case was
open for investigation. according to reports a Toyota Yaris was involved.’’
Van Wyk explained that officers were doing stop and search
operations and executing of search warrants in Mitchell’s Plain following a
shooting incident at 21:40 at Fidelio Street, Eastridge. Mitchells Plain police
registered cases of attempted murder and attack on police
‘’While performing patrols in Buttress Street, Tafelsig,
Mitchells as crime prevention when they heard gunshots coming from Eastridge
Gazelle Street. The crime prevention vehicle entered into Spine Road and saw a
blue Toyota Yaris with hazard lights on. Upon seeing the patrol vehicle
approaching the Toyota sped off with members in pursuit. The vehicle went into
Buffalo and Fidelio Street, where the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on
the members. Members retaliated, however there was too much movement on the
road with community members standing around, and the suspect managed to sped
off,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.
The members found the vehicle parked in Falstaff Street and
upon searching the vehicle, members found several cartridges and one round of
ammunition
SAPS later made a breakthrough as they spotted the blue
Toyota Yaris parked in Falstaff Street and upon searching the vehicle, officers
found several cartridges and one round of ammunition.
‘’One suspect was found standing outside the vehicle with
the keys in his hand. He reported that he is a mechanic and that persons came
to him to have him drive them to their various destinations in Eastridge,
Mitchells Plain. He later stated that he had indeed driven the vehicle and that
the vehicle belongs to his mother. A cellular telephone and vehicle was
confiscated, towed away and handed in as exhibit and further processing. No
members sustained any injuries, no damages to the state vehicle reported,’’
The 23-year-old suspect was arrested and is expected to
appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court on Tuesday
