The Athlone community is bracing for the upcoming parole hearing of convicted murderer Najwa Petersen, who was sentenced to 28 years in prison for orchestrating the 2006 murder of her husband, celebrated musician and theatre icon Taliep Petersen.

Taliep was shot and killed in the couple’s Athlone home in December 2006. Throughout her trial, Najwa maintained her innocence, insisting that armed robbers had broken into their home and fatally shot her husband.

After serving 15 years behind bars, the Pollsmoor Correctional Supervision and Parole Board granted Najwa parole in September 2024. However, that decision was overturned just two months later by Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald, who referred the case to the Correctional Supervision and Parole Review Board for further consideration.

Athlone residents are set to gather today for a community meeting to discuss the case and its potential impact on the area. The Athlone SAPS and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) will co-facilitate the open dialogue, providing residents an opportunity to share their views and concerns of her return to the community.
