Off-duty firefighter murder in Phillipi

An off-duty firefighter was killed in Philippi Park late on Tuesday night. It is reported that the 33-year-old firefighter and a relative were assaulted near their home in what appears to have been a robbery.

‘’Fire crews responded to the incident, and despite their best efforts, their colleague was declared dead on scene. His relative was transported to hospital in critical condition. It is heartbreaking to lose one of our own, particularly given the circumstances,’’ said JP Smith, MMC for Safety & Security.

Western Cape police confirmed the incident which occurred on the corner of Letsitele and David Vanda Street, better Life, Phillipi East, saying t murder and attempted murder cases are being investigated

‘’The 34-year-old victim was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, while his 23-year-old releative was seriously injured, The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no aarests has been made,’’ said Constable Ndakhe Gwala.

The two men were found with stab wounds to their heads and upper bodies.

Smith said the firefighter  joined the City as a seasonal firefighter in 2018 and joined the Fire and Rescue Service as a learner firefighter in 2020.

‘’Fire Service management has arranged assistance to the family through the City’s Employee Assistance Programme. Counselling has also been made available to his colleagues.’’
